This book will change your life

When I bought this book I weighed 180, and I was severely depressed that was almost 2 years ago.
Today I am a happy for 57 year old woman.
Mike is telling the truth when he tells you you can achieve the body of your dreams. I stuck to the program and ignored the naysayers. I am now 115lbs and only 14% body fat. Over 30 years of yoyo dieting and different exercise programs including running and I finally found what works, that is the program you will learn in "Thinner Leaner Stronger"

This book probably contains the best approach for a great physique. It still might not be for everyone.

A lot of other reviewers comment that this book is not for experienced weightlifters and gave it negative reviews for that. This book ("Thinner, Leaner, Stronger," or TLS) wasn't written for them - it was written for people like me.

I've been a regular (4-6 times/week) gym rat for at least 12 years. I started doing conditioning for varsity sports in college, but after I quit sports, I continued working out quite regularly in an attempt to lose/maintain weight and stay healthy. I'm sad to say I've mostly been doing it wrong. The good thing about TLS is that it convinces you that the best way to achieve fitness and lose fat is to lift heavy weights, high intensity cardio, and diet. I was missing the heavy weights part. I'd lifted weights for conditioning in sports but soon stopped after I quit sports. Since then, I had done basically every kind of exercise out there, including group fitness classes and a boutique boxing gym, in order to stay motivated. Many of these mix cardio and strength training (sometimes with weights, sometimes with body weight) into the same 30-60 minute exercise. I always felt like I was getting a good workout but had trouble looking leaner even though I'd sit on the elliptical or treadmill for almost an hour a day.

I've now been following TLS for a little more than 2 weeks. It's not enough time to prove the theory, but it's enough to let me know that this is a great way to work out. It isn't as difficult as some cardio-heavy routines I've done in the past, and I feel like I'm already looking leaner and losing weight. I like that the author goes to great lengths to prove that the workout he suggests, the diet, and the supplements are the best proven ways to achieve lean fitness. If you're wondering whether or not this book is for you, I would suggest reading Mike Matthews' website, "Muscle for Life." Most of the advice, except for the specific workout, are included on that website. The best thing about this workout is that Mike Matthews will answer your questions, either by email or on the website forum.

I love this book so much that I want to tell everyone I know about it. I don't because that would just be annoying - but I can't help it. This book has converted me. I believe I've found the best way to be leaner, thinner, and stronger after 12 years of essentially wasting my time. And you'll notice no bigger theme in this review than that I hate wasting time.

However, I want to point out that this book is not necessarily for everyone. That's why I suggested reading the articles on the website first. Here are some of the downsides of this fitness approach:
- It's best for people who are already in decent shape and used to working out. People just starting to exercise regularly for the first time in their lives might want to adapt some of the exercises, such as less intense cardio to start and lifting in the 8-12 rep range for the first few weeks.
- You'll need access to heavy weights and gym equipment, including a bench, olympic weights, bar, and power rack at a minimum. I priced this out and think it would cost around $1000 to outfit a home gym, less if you can find equipment on craigslist. Your only other option is a gym membership. I've been working out at home lately and prefer home workouts to going to a gym because of the amount of extra time it takes (driving there, changing, showering afterwards, driving back home). But because of the startup cost, as well as the lack of space in my home, I got a gym membership. The downside to all this is that most people don't keep up with fitness routines despite their best intentions to lose weight and then they stop using their gym memberships or their home gym. So this is money down the drain if you can't keep up with it. Gyms are actually relying on people purchasing memberships and then just not going. It's their business model. I personally resent the extra time it takes to go to the gym, even though I've done it for years. Working out at home is my preference. Someday I will save the money to do so.
- This workout is best for people who can devote 45-60 minutes 5-6 days a week to working out. That's just elapsed time doing the workouts, not the extra time I mentioned for getting to/from the gym. It's a little bit longer than fits comfortably in most working folks' schedules. More specifically, the workout requires lifting heavy weights for 3-5 days a week (the routines take about 45 minutes) and then doing 20-30 minutes of cardio 3-5 days a week. The author recommends separating the lifting and cardio by several hours. That isn't possible for me because of my job, and it isn't possible for most people. The alternative is to do the cardio workout right after the lifting workout, squeezing it into the 60 or so minutes if you're really disicplined about rest times and very organized with all the equipment you'll need. Otherwise it takes 15+ minutes longer. Or you could do the minimum 3 lifting days a week and separate 3 cardio days per week. I suspect the fitness improvement will be slower and/or less impressive this way, but it's technically possible. The reason this bothers me is that I've found that I can keep to a workout routine best if it's less than 60 minutes per day, which is a bit tight for this program if I lift 5 days/week with cardio right after.
- I am struggling with the diet, which emphasizes a particular proportion of macro nutrients in addition to calorie deficit, specifically, 45% protein, 20% carbs, and 35% fat. Calorie deficit I can do, but somehow I have to eat 160 or so grams of protein per day and less than 70 grams of carbs, which I haven't managed to do so far. It seems that protein supplements more than once a day would be required. My natural diet of whole foods seem to be 33% protein, 33% carbs, and 33% fat. At the same time, this is a low carb diet, and I've found with willpower issues that it's easier just to reduce calorie intake than it is to worry about exactly what you're eating. I don't mind dieting so much if I can have a frozen lean cuisine pizza for dinner to calm my food cravings. This is not possible on the diet in TLS.
- The supplements section is fairly informative, but I'll point out again the startup cost involved in purchasing supplements. Luckily, supplements are technically optional since they just don't help as much as diet and workouts.

The reduced star to my review, despite the fact that I love this book, is due to the downsides to the program listed above as well as the fact that there is no quick reference guide to the major topics (workout, diet, supplements). Instead, you have to read through all the text to find the piece of information you're looking for. In other words, the information should be summarized more simply, since there are more than a few details to keep straight. I wrote the author about this and he mentioned it will be improved in a future edition of the book.

Buy this first!

I am a long distance triathlete marathoner that was sidelined due to a running injury and was looking for a good book on weight training. I did a search on Amazon and this book stood out among the rest because it was specifically written for women beginning strength training/body building and few good books exist. What surprised me the most was when I received an email from the author asking me if I had any questions about the book or training. At first I thought this can't be a real person but it was. Michael Matthews is a very generous person who really wants to help you by teaching you the most effective method to get leaner and stronger.

Mike's straight forward no-nonsense nuts and bolts approach to weight training appealed to me. Through his personal trials and errors with his own journey in body building, Mike tells you what you should do. He gives you a training menu, supplement advice and a diet guideline. 5 days of less than one hour per day of weight training and 3 hours of cardio per week is all you need. I am new to this whole world of body building and it's my first week, but the program and eating is so far easy for me to follow. Eating right and lifting heavy weights seems to be the important key to reach success.

I am enjoying the gym for the first time after I quit going years ago because I got bored and saw no results. I have a specific goal to transform my body and see the same gym members from 9 years ago doing the same routines with no visible results. My target is to build upper body strength and muscle, make my legs stronger, get rid of my mini muffin top on my backside and have a power butt. Don't let your husband, trainers or hulks at the gym intimidate you from trying to use the men's machines at the gym which women often are afraid to use fearing that they will bulk up with big muscles which is nonsense. It's never too late to try something new at any age. I am 50 years old and it has been a personal dream of mine to do some sort of body building like this since I was a teenager. Since I bought this book, I am having fun doing something new and different from what all the other women here in Japan are doing at my gym.

CHAPTER ONE

On the first day of February, sunny but cold as a frog’s balls, a man named Lane Coolman stepped off a flight at Miami International, rented a mainstream Buick and headed south to meet a man in Key West. He nearly made it.

Twenty-seven miles from Coolman’s destination, an old green Firebird bashed his car from behind. The impact failed to trigger the Buick’s airbags, but Coolman heard the rear bumper dragging. He steered off the highway and dialed 911. In the mirror he saw the Firebird, its grille crimped and steaming, pull onto the shoulder. Ahead stood a sign that read: “Ramrod Key.”

Coolman went to check on the other driver, a woman in her mid-thirties with red hair.

“Super-duper sorry,” she said.

“What the hell happened?”

“Just a nick. Barely bleeding.” She held her phone in one hand and a disposable razor in the other.

“Are you out of your mind?” said Coolman.

The driver’s jeans and panties were bunched around her knees. She’d been shaving herself when she smashed Coolman’s rental car.

“I got a date,” she explained.

“You couldn’t take care of that at home?”

“No way! My husband would get so pissed.”

“Unreal,” said Coolman.

The woman was wearing a maroon fleece jacket and rhinestone flip-flops. On her pale thigh was the razor mark.

“How about a little privacy?” she said. “I’m not quite done here.”

Coolman walked back to the Buick and called the man he was supposed to meet in Key West. “I’ll be a few minutes late. You’re not gonna believe what just happened,” he said on the man’s voicemail, leaving it at that.

The cops arrived and wrote up the red-haired pube shaver for careless driving. Naturally, she had no collision insurance; that would be Avis’s problem, not Lane Coolman’s. A tow truck hauled away the Firebird, which needed a new front end including a radiator. The woman approached Coolman and asked for a ride.

“Tell your ‘date’ to come get you,” he said. One of the police officers had pried the damaged bumper from the Buick, and Coolman was trying to fit it into the backseat.

“He doesn’t have a car,” said the woman, who’d buttoned her jeans. She was attractive in a loose and scattered way. Coolman had a weakness for redheads.

“See, I work for an escort service. We go to where the client’s at,” she said.

“Yes, I understand the concept.”

The woman’s fleece was unzipped and beneath it she wore a black sequined top. Her toes must be freezing in those flip-flops, Coolman thought; the temperature was 55 degrees with a biting north wind, arctic conditions for the Florida Keys.

“My name’s Merry,” she said, “spelled like Merry Christmas.”

“My name’s Bob,” said Coolman, “spelled like Bob.”

“Does that mean you’ll give me a lift?”

“Why not,” Coolman said, the worst mistake he would ever make.

At Mile Marker 22, Merry told him her last name was Mansfield, like the bombshell actress of the Fifties. Coolman stopped at a Circle K where he got a cup of coffee and Merry bought three eight-hour energy drinks, chugging the little purple bottles one after the other.

“You running a marathon?” Coolman asked.

“I’m all about performance.”

At Mile Marker 17, she told him she didn’t really work for an escort service.

“Wild guess—you’re a dancer,” he said.

“On my own time,” she replied. “Not one of those.”

“I didn’t mean it in a bad way.”

“Why didn’t you just say stripper? The games you guys play, I swear.” Her eyelashes were a paler shade of red than her hair.

Coolman said, “Why would you make up a lie about being an escort?”

“ ’Cause I needed a ride, Bob. If I said I was an artifacts appraiser you would’ve left me standing in the road.”

“What is it you appraise?”

“Sunken treasure. Doubloons and cannonballs and so forth. Business is slow right now. I’m an expert on eighteenth-century Spanish maritime.”

“Do you have a real date, or did you make up that part, too?”

Merry laughed. “He’s an Air Force pilot based at Boca Chica. Why else would I be doin’ my trim at sixty-five miles per hour?”

At Mile Marker 8, she blurted, “Did I say Air Force? I meant Navy.” She was buzzing like a flagpole in a lightning storm. “His name’s Rocky.”

“What about your husband?”

“He’s a Rocky, too.”

“Stop,” said Coolman.

“Don’t be judging me. I go for men with strong names.”

The closer they got to Key West, the more Southern her accent became. Coolman was foolishly intrigued.

“What about you?” she said. “What’s your field, Bob? Your expertise.”

“I’m in the entertainment business. I manage talent.”

“Your own, or somebody else’s?”

“Ever seen the show Bayou Brethren?” Coolman asked.

“Little Rocky watches it all the time.”

“That’s your son? Little Rocky?”

“No, it’s what I call my husband. Don’t make me spell out why.”

“Anyway, I manage Buck. You know—the family patriarch? Buck Nance.”

“No shit?”

“Leader of the clan,” said Coolman.

“Yeah, Bob, I know what a fucking patriarch is.”

The show was taped in the Florida Panhandle at a swampy location that somewhat resembled a Louisiana bayou. Buck Nance and his brothers were actually from Wisconsin, but the network paid for a Cajun dialogue coach.

Merry said, “So what brings you all the way down here?”

“Buck has a personal appearance.”

“Where?”

“Parched Pirate.”

“Doing what?”

“Just being Buck.”

Coolman hoped the guitar player had found the bar. Buck Nance had trouble speaking in public unless he was accompanied by a live musician. For his road gigs the writers at the network had come up with eight or nine amusing redneck stories, what you might call a monologue, and afterward Buck would take questions for ten minutes or so. The questions were printed on index cards distributed in advance to random fuckwits in the crowd.

Coolman offered to take Merry to the show. “We’ll hang backstage,” he added. Like there was a backstage.

“What about my date?” she asked.

“Bail,” Coolman said. “Tell him the truth—you had car trouble.”

“But then I shaved down there for no reason.”

“Not necessarily.”

The redhead smiled and shook her head. “For the Zac Brown Band I’d ditch my Navy boy in a heartbeat, but not for some yahoo from the bayou.”

“It’s only the top-rated cable program in the whole country.”

“I prefer the nature channels. You know—penguins and cheetahs. Shit like that.”

“Buck converted his Bentley to an ATV with rifle racks.”

“Why would a grown man do something so ridiculous?”

“America worships the guy. You should come hear him tonight.”

“Another time,” said Merry.

At Mile Marker 5, she made a call on her cell phone. All she said was, “Don’t wet yourself, sugar. I’m almost there.”

At Mile Marker 4, after they’d crossed the bridge into Key West, she flipped open the visor mirror and checked her makeup. Freshened her lipstick. Brushed her hair.

“You look terrific,” said Coolman.

“Damn right, Bob.”

At Mile Marker 3, she exclaimed, “Okay, pull in here!”

It was a small shopping center with a Sears as the high point. Merry directed Coolman where to park. He was surprised when a white Tesla rolled up beside them.

“That’s your boyfriend?” Coolman knew a couple of CAA agents back in L.A. who drove jet-black Teslas. The white model looked pretty sweet. Coolman himself leased a corpuscle-red Mercedes SLK 350 that required no electric outlet.

“I thought you said he didn’t have wheels.”

Merry shrugged. “Must be a loaner.”

The young man who got out of the Tesla was wearing a leather bomber jacket. If not for the gold earring and oily long hair he could have been a Navy pilot.

“It was nice meeting you,” Coolman said to the redhead.

“Oh, you’re coming with.”

“Me? What for?”

The man in the bomber jacket yanked open Coolman’s door and put a pistol to his neck.

“Let’s go, dipshit.”

“Just take my wallet,” Coolman said, breathless. “The Rolex, too, whatever you want.”

“You’re adorable, Bob,” the woman whispered. “Now get out of the fucking car.”

My favorite Carl Hiaasen

A fun read. I like Carl Hiaasen and this book is probably my favorite. Although from New York, I used to do a lot of SCUBA diving in the Keys and I am familiar with some of the locations in the story so I had a connection to the locale. He writes a snappy, never dull, intricate story that you never lose interest in. So many of the characters are caricatures but still seeming real. The main characters are likable (maybe even lovable) and the villains are detestable. Some of the "wise guys" are likable too. Sort of a Sopranos redux.

Buy it, you'll like it!

Disappointed in this one

I have enjoyed most of his books and was excited when this was published. I thought this time the zany crazy over the top characters and scenarios overshadowed the thin plot. It was difficult for me to finish because I did not care about any of the characters.

Razor Girl Could Be Sharper

This is a fun read but it's not Carl Hiasson's best (nor is it his worst). Readers new to Mr. H may be delighted by Razor Girl, while long-time fans are likely to find it formulaic. Hiasson is often compared to Elmore Leonard. The thing is, though, Leonard often got out of Detroit for his tales. Carl Hiasson needs to get out of Florida for a change!

Michael Frye is a professional photographer specializing in landscapes and nature. He has written numerous magazine articles on the art and technique of photography, and is the author and photographer of The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite, three titles in the Yosemite Meditations series, and three ebooks, including Landscapes in Lightroom: The Essential Step-by-Step Guide. His photographs have been published in over thirty countries around the world, and magazine credits include National Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer, American Photo, Sunset, and Texas Highways. Michael has lived near Yosemite National Park in California since 1983.

SPOILER ALERT ! ! ! There's one useful concept here and that is the practice of setting yourself a fixed number of minutes to work and then a fixed number of minutes to rest. This way there's always light at the end of the tunnel; you don't feel daunted by an insurmountable task. In fact there is no tunnel; it's more like being on a bridge or a trestle: you can see light all around. I find that very simple suggestion very helpful, but then the author goes of on this obsessive/compulsive anal retentive jag of keeping track of exactly how many work intervals it takes you accomplish each task and assumes it will take precisely that many every time you perform that task, which, after 45 yrs. in the aerospace biz, I know is a load of dingo's kidneys. Every manager since Pharaoh has wanted people to tell him precisely what would happen precisely when---and be fully committed to that commitment (pssst! Tony Robins called and he wants his fantasy back).

Like I said, one good idea and you don't need to buy the book for it. You can get eminently serviceable little plastic tomato timers from Amazon for half a pittance each. I got about four for work and home.

(P.S. Getting up and moving for a couple of minutes every half hour is also really good for you. Ask your doctor.)

No more multi-tasking

Even though folks think I am a time management guru this book put me to shame! It worked so well I was able to do three times as much. It does put to the death the multi-tasking principle and makes us all FOCUS. Wish that the worksheets were larger and more easily reproduced on a computer download. That would save me more time!

I haven't always been a disciplined person. In the past I couldn't follow even the simplest routines. I had an unhealthy diet, exercised little (and hence, was overweight), and didn't have the discipline to commit to the process of changing myself.

Today, I follow a strict routine. I have a morning routine, go to the gym three times a week and regularly practice several other sports including tennis, cycling, and swimming. I maintain a healthy diet and constantly work on new, challenging goals to become a better person.

It took me years before I finally understood what discipline is and how to apply it in my situation. Now I'd like to share what I've learned with you.

What I like most about this book is the author doesn't waste ...

I am retired military, special operations type, and have studied and applied self discipline to many areas of my life. What I like most about this book is the author doesn't waste time typical "rah-rah you can do it fluff", he gets right to the point with specific ways to increase your self discipline in your daily life. He gives you points of research to validate his points and is a straight shooter telling you it takes work. He could give many more examples and add pages to the book, but the concepts are applicable to any are you want to improve.

We eat eggs from our own happy chickens, organic produce from our garden

I’m almost there. I eat wild caught salmon, local grass fed beef and yogurt, cheese and butter from grass fed cows. We eat eggs from our own happy chickens, organic produce from our garden, the farmers market, or frozen from the grocery store. We regularly drink green smoothies made with organic greens and berries and mostly skip breads and sugar. I buy very little processed food. We go to a hot springs pool full of healing minerals and no chlorine three times a week where I do high intensity interval training and sit in the sauna or relax in a 106 degree therapy pool. I ride my recumbent tadpole trike and enjoy the gorgeous view of eight fourteen thousand foot mountains as I pedal home. My dear, sweet husband of 49 years and I lived 13 years in an RV in less than 400 square feet and loved the simplicity. Still do even though we are now in a house. But one thing I don’t do is lose weight.

ln spite of all I have learned in my 70 years, I still gained valuable insights from this book and mistakes I am making came into clearer focus. For example, I spend too much time sitting in front of the computer doing research for my books because it is so much fun that I don’t make myself stop. If I do manage to stop, I go grazing through the kitchen. If we are out and about and my husband suggests ice cream, I usually get some, too. I get too frazzled and peevish at times instead of remaining calm and grateful for the many, many things I have to be grateful for. I love the challenge I read about in the book of not complaining for 21 days. I failed by 2PM on the first day but I was aware that I had complained and that feels like a huge step in the right direction.

The book is not preachy. It doesn’t point fingers and condemn. It is encouraging without being sappy. The ideas presented are easy to understand and totally doable because they are not harsh and limiting. And, amazingly, I find myself actually looking forward to becoming more disciplined. It has been a long time since I have felt so encouraged about reaching my goal to be not just thinner, but healthier.

Too much focus on weight loss, impractical ideas.

I bought this because of all the amazing reviews, but 15 minutes into it and I'm disappointed already. For one thing, the author's constant assertion that overweight=unhealthy/lazy is annoying. Sure, he may have been unhealthy and lazy, but to repeatedly assert that anyone overweight is that way because they are undisciplined is condescending and frankly, irritating. Secondly, I didn't realize how much of this book was focused on weight loss/dieting. I skipped this part of the book, as I currently have no desire to lose weight. This could also be an issue for people with a history of eating disorders, as at least twice outside the dieting specific chapter he mentions restive eating habits as a way to lose weight. Third, some of this info is helpful, like using uncomfortable situations to gain self confidence is neat, but the suggestions, like taking freezing showers, going out under-dressed for the weather, or walking to work -no matter how impractical- are a little ridiculous. I will say this book is reasonably priced for the length - it is short. I was planning to read this book over the month, but this could easily be knocked out in a few hours, maybe even less.
