About the Author
Edward B. Fiske is the founder and editor of the Fiske Guide to Colleges. A former Education Editor of the New York Times, Fiske is known around the world for his award-winning writing on topics ranging from trends in American higher education to school reform in Southeast Asia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The guide was established in 1982 when, covering higher education for the Times, Fiske sensed the need for a publication that would help students and parents navigate the increasingly complex college admissions scene. The guide, an annual publication, immediately became a standard part of college admissions literature and it is now the country's best-selling college guide.

Fiske has teamed up with his wife, Helen F. Ladd, a professor at Duke University, on several major international research projects regarding the development of education in various countries. Together, they are co-editors of the Handbook of Research in Education Finance and Policy, the official handbook of the American Education Finance Association. Fiske's journalistic travels have taken him to more than 60 countries on behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development, UNESCO and the Asia Society.

Born in Philadelphia, Fiske graduated from Wesleyan University summa cum laude, and received master's degrees in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and in political science from Columbia University. He is a regular contributor to the International Herald-Tribune. In addition to the New York Times, his articles and book reviews have appeared in Atlantic Monthly, Chronicle of Higher Education, Los Angeles Times, and other national publications.

A resident of Durham, North Carolina, Fiske serves on a number of boards of non-profit organizations working for access to college and international understanding. He is also a founding member of the board of the Central Park School for Children, a charter school in Durham.

Paints a Too-Rosy Picture of All the Colleges, But Informative Nonetheless.

I'm a Harvard Grad (class of '02), professional test-prep tutor and college consultant based in San Diego, and I give this book my qualified recommendation.

I've been using the Fiske guide to Colleges with my students for over 10 years now. Although it's not my favorite college guide (that honor goes to Princeton Review's College Guide The Best 380 Colleges, 2016 Edition (College Admissions Guides)), the Fiske guide is still helpful and worth checking out for its unique perspectives.

However, be forewarned that the Fiske guide is not exactly an unbiased, realistic source of information. If you're looking for honest criticism of colleges as well as glowing praise, then don't bother looking here--it makes every college look great. Yes, student interviews are included, but they are overwhelmingly positive--it's almost as if these entries are extensions of the admissions department from each school. The most negative kind of comments you can find are those such as "classes are demanding" and "this school is for people who want to make a lot of money after college."

If you're like me, then as a college-bound student (or the parent of one) you don't just want to read the good news about your prospective schools, but the bad news too. If the dining hall food is lousy, the dorms are dreadful, or the town is not college-friendly, then this is something we deserve to know, rather than have glossed over in a sea of overblown praise. Look elsewhere for this type of critical information.

It's a simple, easy to use "phone book" style college guide with a brief write up on each school mixed in with a few statistics about each institution. I think this book is a great supplement to "The Enlightened College Applicant: A New Approach to the Search and Admissions Process." We're using both books to help my daughter navigate the college search and I'm happy with how everything is going so far. I really like how this book gives you the basics on each college.

Must-read for MH370

I'm actually surprised that there are only 4 other reviews and that they're not all 4 or 5 stars, because I loved this book--totally worth buying it before it was available at the library. :)

This is almost presented as two parts of a single story--one is the story of MH370, and the other is how CNN and Quest handled it.In the first part, Quest rehashes the events of MH370 expertly, just as you'd expect from a journalist: he gives the facts only, in a clear, concise format. He includes a valuable "Who's Who" of investigators, governments, and passengers. The players and timeline, laid out in that manner, really shocks the reader at how bizarre this story really is. Loved it for that reason first.

Quest then moves on to detailing many of the subsequent issues, working through possible explanations for each--including the mishandling by the government, the lies and misinformation, the myriad of conspiracy theories, and a host of possible real explanations for what happened in 2014.

The second part (but interspersed throughout the entire book) is how CNN worked this story and Quest's involvement as an expert in aviation journalism. I get that he's not a pilot (a statement that he addresses early in the book), and some have taken issue with that fact. But I didn't take issue with it--especially since his aviation reporting had him flying with the copilot just weeks before MH370's disappearance.

Included in the CNN/journalist story was Quest's take on how CNN presented the events week after week. He also divulged some less-than-camera-worthy moments, like dealing with persnickety guests or inappropriate banter on live TV. I honestly hadn't expected the CNN portion at all, as I'd thought this was mostly going to be a book about the facts and consequences of MH370's disappearance, like other books. But aside from Quest's occasional whining (like when someone said he wasn't an aviation expert) and some unnecessary opinions here and there, the CNN info didn't detract (but rather enhanced) the book.

In all, I loved it for its concise layout of the facts and players with the explanation of theories and conspiracies (fraudulent passports, pilot/copilot potential involvement, battery packs, etc). He even offers a theory of his own, to take or leave. In all, this was a fabulous read!

Bringing together the work of anthropologists, sociologists, economists, historians, and geographers, this collection reveals how the banana industry marshaled workers of differing nationalities, ethnicities, and languages and, in so doing, created unprecedented potential for conflict throughout Latin American and the Caribbean. The frequently abusive conditions that banana workers experienced, the contributors point out, gave rise to one of Latin America’s earliest and most militant labor movements. Responding to both the demands of workers’ organizations and the power of U.S. capital, Latin American governments were inevitably affected by banana production. Banana Wars explores how these governments sometimes asserted their sovereignty over foreign fruit companies, but more often became their willing accomplices. Sci fi for beginners

This is a science fiction novel that is extremely reader friendly. Wonder about that whole gravity thing on the moon? How to grow things without sunlight? It’s covered. Numeric passwords on vehicles? Thing of the past.

And yet some things are familiar. For Phaet Theta, looking up at the stars in the sky, “”I musn’t shift my eyes from the stars to anything else, because if I do, maybe some will shoot away so fast that I won’t find them again. It’s a silly thought—the Universe isn’t expanding quite that quickly—but there are thousands of light-years from their location to ours, so the way I see them, as they were ages ago, could be different from what they have become. Just as Cyngus and Anka—and Mom—may have changed from the way I see them in my mind” (90-91).

This book reminded me of a lot of other stories, especially those popularized by movies recently, with the training the young people go through. Phaet undergoes training, physical strength training, history, and even piloting. I liked this book better, though.

The idea feels over done and boring from the start

You can tell this was written by a young author. The idea feels over done and boring from the start, basically every other corrupt dystopian book only it's in space, it jumps in with made up technology it doesn't explain, the exposition is painfully obvious and not natural at all, and with most of the characters between 15 and 18 you would expect them to sound like actual high schoolers and not middle schoolers. And naming your character "fate" is a little too on the nose

Way too many problems, gave up before the end

Dove Arising is a new YA from Karen Bao, and one which I persevered through despite a host of issues, until I reached the last fifth or so when things really began to go off the rails. I pushed on, admittedly skimming a bit, thinking I’m this far in I can finish, but the cumulative effect was just too much and I ended up giving up about forty pages from the end.

The setting is one of a series of bases on the moon, in a future where Earth is under the domination of two floating city-states and their respective alliances, and in a cold-war (that occasionally heats up) relationship with the moon bases. Phaet, a 15-year-old girl, has her life turned upside down when her mother is taken away for quarantine and then later arrested for “disruptive print,” as the bases system is a bit dictatorial (ruled by a committee, constant surveillance, prohibitions on speech). To pay for the medical and legal bills, Phaet enlists in the militia, where she needs to rise high in the ranks to keep her mom out of prison and her siblings out of the hell that is “Shelter” — the place where the poor are dumped.

As mentioned, there were a host of issues. The world building is shallow and never feels fully thought out or like an actual working system; instead it feels like a hodgepodge of dystopias and YA sci-fi, crossing over at times into being entirely derivative; it’ll be easy to spot bits of Ender’s Game, Divergent, and Hunger Games here. There’s the requisite young love and potential triangle, which if done well could just be a trope of the genre but here feels wholly flat and perfunctory. None of the characters have any life to them; side characters are completely flat while Phaet just basically moves along through the plot with little sense of personality or individuality. And her smooth arc through the military training was just wholly implausible, and to be honest, its conclusion was simply nonsensical. As for the last bit of the book, it just wholly spins out of control, with plot moves that make no sense or again, are completely implausible, character actions appearing out of nowhere, people and systems behaving nothing like people and systems would. It’s a rushed, chaotic, unbelievable swirl of events involving characters I just don’t care about who long ago left the real world.

To be honest, that this book was published and has a strong YA push is just depressing to me. Dove Arising felt less like a book for young teens than one written by a young teen. I don’t fault the author, who I’m sure put her heart and soul into creating something, but I do blame an industry that is happy to spit out formulaic poorly written, immature books in the apparent belief that “it’s just for kids—they’ll read anything like the last thing they read.” Not recommended.

This nclex endocrine system is one of my resources. It has 105 practical question consist of anatomy and endocrine diseases. It helped me evaluate my knowledge and weakness. it has good rationale too.

Very informative read

Endocrinology can be a confusing topic as there are many different hormones to memorize along with their function. The study guide will help strengthen your understanding of what can happen when any of the endocrine organs fail or become overactive. This book is a very interesting study guide that will make you enjoy learning this topic.

Paul Beatty's writing reminds me that the emergence of genius always comes unheralded - a mature well thought out style, belief or idea that seems to have no precursor - mushroom (truffle more apropo for Mr. Beatty) that wasn't there yesterday. Beatty's talent on every page - a restless mind spraying ideas and poetic images at you at a pace that seems unsustainable. But he fails to shake my belief that nihilism is just a way of pissing away our most precious commodity, time. Carpe diem Mr. B. - hellish lives need that brilliant mind to shine a light.
D. Thomas says it better.
"Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night."

Paul Beatty is the best Black writer writing. He's a erudite genius. His examination of "Blackness" is a literary and philosophical Fourth of July. Beatty knows everything to be known and is happy to throw it at the reader. The reader must be well educated, including all culture from Western Civ to Hip Hop. This book is a grand Performance of flash. Roll Over Ralph Ellison. Jesse B.Simple wold recommend this book to you, if you were to buy him a beer.

Loved this book

Loved this book. It was a little slower getting started but around 2/3 of the way through I was devouring it and had this feeling where I knew I was reading something special. It was beautifully written; I'd come across a sentence and want to read it again aloud because the words felt good in my mouth. It has incredibly moving parts and I thought it was masterfully done. I have been recommending this book to everyone.
