Not Dead & Not for Sale: A Memoir, by Scott Weiland

The instant New York Times bestseller: the lead singer of the Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver delivers an exhilarating memoir of scaling the pinnacle of rock stardom, plunging into the chasm of addiction and incarceration, and then clawing his way back to the top again and again.

In the early 1990s, Stone Temple Pilots—not U2, not Nirvana, not Pearl Jam—was the hottest band in the world. STP toppled such megabands as Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses on MTV and the Billboard charts. Lead singer Scott Weiland became an iconic front man in the tradition of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Robert Plant. Then, when STP imploded, it was Weiland who emerged as the emblem of rock star excess, with his well-publicized drug busts and trips to rehab.

Weiland has since made a series of stunning comebacks, fronting the supergroup Velvet Revolver, releasing solo work, and reuniting with Stone Temple Pilots. He has prevailed as a loving, dedicated father, as well as a business-savvy artist whose well of creativity is far from empty. Not Dead & Not for Sale is a hard rock memoir to be reckoned with—a passionate, insightful, and at times humorous book that reads with extraordinary narrative force.

"Fascinating . . . Weiland's story isn't over, but the four decades' worth of material he crams into "Not Dead & Not for Sale" makes for a compelling and worthwhile read." --"Associated Press"

PRELUDE

EVERY TIME I TRY TO CATCH UP TO MY LIFE, something stops me. Different people making claims on my life. Old friends telling me new friends aren’t true friends. All friends trying to convince me that I can’t survive without them.

Then there are the pay-for-hire get-off-drugs professionals with their own methods and madness. They help, they hurt, they welcome me into their institutions … and, well, their madness.

Welcome to my life.

Two years ago, my life was self-restricted to a sober living house, meaning that I walked through the doors of my own free will. Within hours, I watched the game of communal free will get stepped on, laughed at, and batted around like a Ping-Pong ball.

One of my fellow patients was a rocker chick just turned twenty-one. She had a problem with depression. We met in the lounge and talked the night away, smoking cigarettes, exchanging words of comfort.

“Am I pretty?” she asked me.

“You are beautiful,” I told her.

“Everyone says I smell because I haven’t showered.”

“Everyone can get fucked,” I told her. “When you’re depressed, you’re not exactly in the mood for a shower.”

She told me a story of grief and confusion. I listened. When she was through, we hugged good night. She kissed me sweetly. She wanted more.

“We can’t do this,” I said. “It’s not right. Not now, not here.”

A day later, I was approached by one of the counselors whom I considered a first-class shit talker.

“Rumor has it that the two of you were intimate.”

“What’s intimate?” I asked.

“Sex.”

“No!”

“She obviously has a crush on you.”

“Okay. What of it?”

“I heard you two had sex in the Jacuzzi.”

“No Jacuzzi,” I said. “No sex. Besides, who has sex in a Jacuzzi?”

“I want to know what happened,” she insisted.

“We were flirtatious. That was inappropriate. So we stopped.”

This young woman was confronted at our next group session. Sixteen hours later, she sliced her leg down past the fatty tissue. She was a cutter. They took her out of the villa and put her in a psych ward.

What can I do about it?

I write a poem, “The Little Villa and Painted Egg.”

Minds squall, alcohol, heroin

The man, the boy, the girl

The little villa where you live

You need to fill that pain inside

Xanex, Valium, barbiturates—they ease the easy side

Of all you fucked-up managerial types

You love to rule by what you say

Not by what you find

Beautiful garden, Easter eggs, those that you never really had

You stole our experiences and stole our baskets

That’s how you found twenty-one out of fifty-seven

THAT WAS LAST MONTH. This week I’m home dealing with those who “manage” my business life, those who, for their own purposes, direct my moves. They are my partners, assistants, and drug coaches (whom we call “minders”). There is no peace, not for an hour, not for thirty seconds. Someone is always showing up with calculated suggestions and implied instructions. I don’t know, but I think I’ve done pretty well for myself, even during my long-lasting, narcotic misadventures—all without the protective bubble of paranoid employees, partners, and helpers—er, minders.

Meanwhile, the facts are these:

It has been eight and a half years since I shot dope and nearly three years since I did coke.

I still drink. A regular garden-variety boozer, I am like any other barfly or drink-alone kind of guy. My relationship to liquor is not romantic the way I once envisioned my love affair with dope. I struggle to stop drinking, but I don’t see it as suicidal. In any event, I’m not drinking today. Today I’m inviting you into the middle of my life and the middle of my head. My heart feels a bit closed off because I’m realizing that there are few people, if any, that I fully trust. That’s an amazing statement to make and brings me to what may be the purpose of this book.

How did I get to this point? One word could probably suffice—loss.

I’m searching for explanations.

Someone recently gave me a T-shirt that said, I’M IN LIKE SEVEN BANDS.

There is a Stone Temple Pilots story to tell. There is a Velvet Revolver story to tell. There is a love story to tell. And a drug story to tell.

AMONG MY GREAT LOVES is that category of substances called heroin. Narcotic alkaloids. Derivatives of opium. I describe this stuff lovingly. I do so at the risk of high irresponsibility. It is not my intention to mislead anyone looking to live a righteous life. God knows that the shit will kill you, inside and out, soul to the bone. At the same time, I am committed to an honest assessment of the wreckage of my past. I loved opiates; I hated opiates; I am attracted to opiates perhaps the way John Keats was attracted to death. One hundred ninety years ago, the romantic poet wrote “Ode to a Nightingale”:

I have been half in love with easeful Death,

Call’d him soft names in many a mused rhyme,

To take into the air my quiet breath;

Now more than ever seems it rich to die,

To cease upon the midnight with no pain,

With thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad

In such an ecstasy!

IS DEATH THE MUSE? Is rock and roll the nightingale? Are opiates the key to unlocking the magical kingdom where colorful flowers fade to black? Why should anyone—especially a kid or a man who suspects that he or she may have talent—be drawn to such a kingdom?

I don’t know. Except that the pull is visceral. It may also be an act of self-loating or anger against home or society or even the human condition in which the promise of death shadows us from those first fresh moments of birth.

I think of the young woman overwhelmed by a compulsion to cut herself. The compulsion is heartbreaking and bizarre, but maybe not bizarre at all—maybe it’s simply the most honest compulsion of all because it gets to the heart of the matter. My long opiate-dazed days and sleepless nights were all about cutting myself emotionally. When I got high, the last thing in the world I wanted to do was party or interact with other human beings. I retreated to the dark corners of my room and my life. I stayed alone and disappeared down black holes where no one could find me. I couldn’t find myself. I didn’t want to find myself. I became invisible. Or, as I put it in the song “Dead and Bloated,” “I am smellin’ like the rose that someone gave me on my birthday deathbed.”

the worst Rock n' Roll Autobio I've ever read
By STP fan
I am a huge STP fan, and have been looking forward to this books release since Mr. Weiland first began speaking of it 5-10 years ago. Given that much time to write the book and working with a talented co-author in David Ritz I felt like this was going to be a great read, from the point of view of a man that has lead one hell of a crazy life. instead all we are given is an extended recount of every article that is written about scott. There is almost no incite into the inner-workings of any of Scott's bands, or even expanded interpretations of well known story's of his life.
The book will take most people 1.5-3 hours to read, and approx. 10% of that is lyrics from songs he's written. It's 238 pages but reads like a 100 page book due to the "art", blank pages, and huge page breaks. so How do you cram great incite into the life of someone who's sold 40 Million records, been in rehab countless times, and been a permanent fixture in rock news for 20 years in 100 pages? You don't. Weiland's ex-wife Mary Forsberg's book released last year was much better written, much more informative, and much more interesting then Scott's book. Almost everything printed in this book was covered with more clarity in Mary's book.
If you really want to know about the history of STP, or Velvet revolver or Scott's solo work, there is much more information on-line then is offered in this book. It's incredible how little he delves into this actually. I haven't gone and actually counted but I'm sure the name Eric Kretz (STP drummer) only appears in the book 3 times. surely in 20 years of STP's history, Scott and Eric had SOME sort of note-worthy interaction. It almost seems that he purposely left all the interesting details of his life out. As if he started off with the intentions of baring his soul on paper like Anthony Kiedis did in his autobio, but quickly decided that he'd rather not have any information that wasn't already public knowledge released.
I have no doubt that the Story of Scott Weiland would be a compelling read, unfortunatly it appears that Scott figured out AFTER signing his book deal that he wasn't ready to let the world in on his private life.

Underwhelmed
By Lillian Rose
It is with sadness that I say that this is the most uninformative biography that I have read to date. I love biographies and am a huge STP fan but, feel robbed. I feel guilty for not writing a favorable review but, feel that I must in all good conscience be honest. There is no meat and potatoes in this bio. I would call it an outline and not a book. Very surprising considering Scott had help with it. I wonder if it's possible to get a refund?

not much insight
By austincara
i was really excited about this book, because i read mary weiland's account of things, and i thought it would be really interesting to see how someone else viewed the same events. scott starts with a promise of insight and helpfulness and a desire to be honest, however, when recounting events, very little is actually said. i feel like the same information could have been gotten from wikipedia. i think he had the best intentions when starting, but somehow lost interest in writing somewhere in the middle. if you don't want to share things with the world, i get it, and that's perfectly reasonable, but then don't write a book. there's very little relating of feelings toward certain subjects, and if feelings are shared, they're very superficial, that is, there's mention of guilt or bliss but no further elaborations. every now and then he puts in a random jab at his ex wife that seems to contradict everything he's just said about her. there's a lot of space filler and really just not a lot of either owning up to behavior or explaining his perspective of things. it's very dry. his drug use is more or less breezed over. not a lot of personal stories. like i said, i think he just really didn't want to tell anybody anything, and that's fair. i just don't know why i had to give him money for him to tell me that. i seriously read this book from cover to cover while my daughter watched tangled. i'm certain he could have actually helped a few people by writing more honestly.

It's the Mission, Not the Mandates: Defining the Purpose of Public Education, by Amy Fast

This book invites a conversation among stakeholders of public education and conveys the need for a common vision for America’s public schools. Amy Fast argues that we have never had a clear purpose for our schools and that now, more than ever, educators in America ache for a more inspiring purpose than simply improving results on standardized assessments.

Fast asserts how focusing on the mission instead of simply the mandates and measures is how real change occurs. Until we have a common and transparent purpose that serves to inspire those in the trenches of the work, reform in public education will continue to flounder. Through the examination of our past and current priorities for American schools, Fast uncovers a nobler purpose that will intrinsically move educators as well as students to be inspired in their work. In turn, it is this inspiration—not another silver bullet reform—that will lead to meaningful change in society.

Review
Dr. Amy Fast engages teachers and leaders in profound reflection and analysis of their personal beliefs, actions, and practices in order to awaken student learning and lead the way in transforming education. (Davey Altree, new teacher mentor)

Fast's book demands that we move beyond the "what" and the "how" of schooling - these often convoluted by accountability measures - and instead turn to each other in conversation about our moral imperatives. Her book provides provocative questions that can move education forward if educators and the general public have the courage to engage in thoughtful discourse. (Angela Peery, EdD, national consultant and author, Leadership and Learning Center)

Dr. Amy Fast raises critical questions about public education in America, including whether it is teachers’ sense of purpose or the educational mandates that make the difference. The nature of Dr. Fast’s argument will provoke both thought and emotion. She helps us to reflect on and see more clearly why we do what we do. (Kyra Donovan, director, McMinnville School District; professional development associate at The Leadership and Learning Center)

Dr. Fast’s informed perspective comes from the heart and trenches of education as she continues to work in schools as a teacher and professional developer. Her analysis provides insight into a complex system, and her arguments will move readers to change the narrative about America’s schools. (Veronica Chase, teacher and professional development specialist)

Dr. Fast Nails It!...An Inspiring and Important Read for Educators, Administrators, and Parents...
By Vicki L. Anderson
"It's the Mission, Not the Mandates" is a refreshing and inspiring read for anyone interested in improving public education in America. This book provides much needed hope for educators, administrators, policymakers, students, and parents that they can create passion and inspiration for learning in our public schools.

Dr. Fast is a passionate educator who expertly articulates the seemingly overwhelming challenges faced by America's educators and administrators. She defines with precision the changes that need to be made to motivate teachers to become exceptional educators and inspire students to do their best, masterfully identifying the "sweet spot" that has the potential to change the trajectory of students' lives and improve the health of our communities.

Dr. Fast demonstrates how America's public schools have lost their way and provides a clear path for improving public education, improving students' lives, and improving society. "It is not an exaggeration to say that those in the field of education are in the business of changing the world. Educators know that children are the key to improving society, that they are the future of our communities, and there is no work more important than investing in that future."

I especially appreciate that Dr. Fast provides an important and overdue voice for all stakeholders in public education, expressing the concerns of administrators, teachers, and students facing overwhelming pressure to maintain the "laser-like focus" that schools across America are being begged to employ, the problem being when that "laser-like focus" begins to function more like tunnel-vision.

Dr. Fast calls out the systematic demoralization of teachers who, day in and day out, try their hardest to do what is best for their students only to be told that they are failing by mandated measures that seem arbitrary. She provides an important voice for students who have been required to sit through what seems like pointless instruction that does not feel relevant to their lives or their futures.

She discusses the various expectations that business leaders, politicians, civic leaders, and parents have of public schools, including, but not limited to, preparing students for college, creating responsible citizens to ensure that our country continues to nurture the ideals of freedom and equality; preparing students for the global economy so America can maintain its competitive edge; the need to instill better moral compasses in our children by teaching social skills; self-monitoring strategies; responsibility to the greater good; and a respect for authority. There are others who want schools to provide free child care and free meals, develop students' self-esteem, teach life skills and good work habits to combat the effects of bad parenting, promote good health, and provide vocational preparation.

But most importantly, "It's the Mission, Not the Mandates" provides a clear path for improving America's public schools. This book is exceptionally well-written and well-researched, and Dr. Fast is clearly passionate about improving students' lives through inspiring education. Vicki Anderson - Co-Founder of Citizens for Better Schools Foundation/ Snoqualmie Valley Schools Foundation

Interesting philosophy on current issues in public education
By Brian A.
"if you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." Dr. Fast describes in clear detail the current disconnect between what society truly needs from public education and what is being asked of it. The philosophical point of view detailed in this book will resonate with anyone concerned about the state of public education today. This book needs to be in the hands of not just teachers and administrators. It will definitely speak to the hearts of those who public education serves as well.

Join the Revolution!
By Margaret M. Ridgeway
This book is a must read for anyone who has anything to do with education, but especially for those contemplating going into the profession. Unless you are willing to be part of the “revolution” which Dr. Fast suggests, you should walk away. Have no doubt that the descriptions that Dr. Fast portrays in describing the state of education today and the stakeholders involved are overwhelming but highly accurate.

Teaching is, or was, a second career for me; one I felt called to do later in life, not only to help young people but also because I wanted to know why so many were failing to become successful. Many people advised me not to do it, but being hardheaded I knew I had to find out for myself. I was determined to work in a school that was failing, because I knew that was where I would find the truth. My experiences in and out of the classroom over the last five years have been an eye opening training in itself. A month ago I walked away from my high school Civics class so disillusioned by a system that seems determined, albeit unintentionally, to destroy itself. I am thankful I found this very inspiring work by Amy Fast.

As I read the book, so many memories came flooding in, i.e., being told to focus on the “bubble” students, to manage the classroom by controlling students through rewards and force, being led by well-intentioned administrators whose sole focus had become moving their school performance score up so many points, and too many teachers who were just waiting until they could retire or move to a better school. If teacher apathy wasn’t enough, one of the biggest obstacles I encountered was student apathy that was ingrained by the time they made it to high school. Learning had no purpose for them but was only what they had to do until they moved on to the next class. The advice I always received was to be more engaging, but my question was always “How do I engage young people whose life and educational experiences have left them with no ability or even the desire to self-regulate long enough to be engaged?”

The beauty of It’s the Mission, not the Mandates: Defining the Purpose of Public Education, however, is not simply its accuracy, but the fact that it gives hope and strategies for real change. I have argued for much of what Dr. Fast advocates, without much success. The process is not something that will be easy or overnight. As she advises, it will definitely take a full-fledged revolution and not just reformation. It is not something that individual teachers can achieve, because it requires and demands all stakeholders participate. I may not see the end of the war for our children’s future, but I definitely intend to try and be a stirring force that keeps the embers glowing. When I left the classroom, I needed to see in black and white what it takes to make education work and that it can be accomplished. This wonderful book conveys the passion it takes to do this successfully. Thank you Dr. Fast!

Slightly Dated Yet Fundamental Reference Text for Thermal System Engineers
By Ronald George
I'm an engineering professional who recently used this book for the study of the Design of Thermal Systems at Rochester Institute of Technology. It is written by William Stoecker, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and published in 1989.

The first two chapters are on engineering design and selecting workable designs. A 3rd chapter introduces engineering economics to forecast system costs in terms of future costs or translate future costs to present costs. The 4th chapter introduces equation fitting to model the behavior of subsystem components based on, say data from a catalog. This is followed by a chapter on system modeling, i.e drawing the functional flow diagram indicating mass transfer and work inputs/outputs from "black" box type unit components. Chapter 6 teaches how to simulate the model which helps in sensitivity studies before or after optimization. Mathematical optimization methods such as Lagrange Multipliers, Search Methods and Linear Programming among others are presented in chapters 8-12. For project work, possibly the best part of the book is contained in the Appendix. It lists thought provoking system design challenges that involve the full breadth and scope of the tools presented in the book.

The 3rd edition of this book can be used within the context of a senior undergraduate or first year graduate curriculum. The reason I write that is because Stoecker makes only passing attempts to elaborate elementary concepts in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. So be warned since right off the bat, the 2nd chapter presents problems in the analysis of systems for optimization, for example a piping system for water conveyance or the design requirement to heat a swimming pool given various constraints. If it has been a while since you took thermo or heat transfer, you're well advised to use supplemental texts to fill the knowledge gap.

The ideal student of this text is one who is well prepared to face these challenging problems and has some degree of experience with them in actual working life. The merit of the book is in its well thought out problems that have been developed from Stoecker's teaching as well as research into real world design problems.

There is little possibility that a solutions manual for the text can be obtained so it is advised that the student develop his solutions with his own research and thinking. Socratic discussions with the lecturer to get further insights can always help. Which brings me to the fact that the ideal lecturer is one who has also worked in engineering plants with a number of these systems in actual practice - compressors, pumps, turbines, piping systems, evaporators, condensors etc.

The fundamentals of the math behind the optimization and system simulation may not have changed. But I've rated 4 stars for this book only because its design methodologies can seem a little dated for our times especially. Stocker hasn't really edited the book to present new concepts on concurrent engineering, design for environment, design for manufacturability, quality function deployment, decision trees etc. The meat of the book is in its analysis and optimization as the title says but I still think that the new era engineer will be served better if contemporary upstream methodologies used to generate concepts, arrive at workable solutions etc can be presented in the book. Which is why Adrian Bejan's "Thermal Design and Optimization" is also another excellent text on this subject. Stay tuned for my review of that book!!

An awesome translation of the New Testament!
By Carolyn H. Hopler
J.B. Phillips translated this edition from the original Greek. It speaks as should any real translation of the Word of God.
It is as if the LORD is talking right to you thru his translation. A simple and easy to understand work. Everyone should read it for themselves and this one makes you want to read again and again, as well as share what and how J.B. puts it!

God's Name
By A. Gomez
This review is of The New Testament in Modern English translated by J. B. Phillips. It is the 1966 Sixteenth Printing and includes a forward by the translator.

Phillips does not use any form of God's name either Jehovah or Yahweh in the main text. There is one place it is found at Revelation 19:1, 3, 4, 6 as "Alleluia" which means Praise Jah, the shortened form of Jehovah.

For those that are interested Phillips translates John 1:1 as "was with God and was God," also this verse as a paraphrase has a rendering a little different then most other translations. At John 8:58 Phillips translates "before there was an Abraham, I AM!" And lastly parts of Philipians 2:5-7 translates as "For he, who had always been God by nature, did not cling to his prerogatives as God's equal".

It's also interesting to note what English words Phillips used in certain instances.

At Matthew 24:3 Phillips chooses 'coming' for the Greek word parousia instead of presence.

Another word that sometimes can be confusing is the translator's use of hell. In this case Phillips uses either 'death' or 'the grave' for hades, this was quite refreshing. For Gehenna he translates 'rubbish heap' or 'destruction' except at James 3:6 where he writes 'blazing hell'.

Cross or stake from the Greek words stauros and xylon he ignores the original meaning of these words and uses 'cross' everywhere except at Galatians 3:13 where he uses 'tree'.

In the first occurrence of the Greek word ma'goi he clearly identifies who these men were by correctly calling them 'astrologers' but then reverts to 'wise men'.

This is a modern paraphrase translation but Phillips does have a certain philosophy that might serve as a warning. On page 'vi' of his forward he writes, "Paul, for instance, writing in haste and urgency to some of his wayward and difficult Christians, was not tremendously concerned about dotting the i's and crossing the t's of his message. I doubt very much whether he was concerned about being completely consistent with what he had already written." Phillips goes on to say that there is no point to "study his writing microscopically" to try to deduce hidden meanings but he may with this philosophy of translating crossed to the point of not always accurately transmitting the meaning of the Greek words that the writers of the Christian Greek Scriptures wrote or possibly being inconsistent with the use of English words so that a reader may not realize the same Greek word has been translated in numerous ways into English. This can lead to confusion on what the original Greek means. This is not to say words don't need some change depending on context and usage when translating to English but since there is no notification through footnotes and it is a paraphrase translation it is very easy to change or corrupt the original meaning without the reader knowing. Let the reader use discernment.

Phillips writes that a translator must "not be driven by the bogey of consistency" and then highlights some areas where he feels obligated to bridge the gap to our modern world but in altering the text to fit his opinion on what a person should read he may be substituting his own ideas for what is written. Once again it must be pointed out that this wouldn't be so bad if there were a mechanism such as footnotes to highlight these changes, there is none though, so one could be left guessing at familiar passages that have altered meanings.

It seems to be that Phillips although a clever and intelligent translator has a certain attitude toward the Holy Bible that he can be the arbitrator of what is correct and what is not or what is important today and what is not. As an example of this you may notice the one footnote he has at 1 Corinthians 14:22 where he changes the English to the exact opposite of the Greek text, now he does make this known, but there is the subtleness in that he says maybe Paul meant to write the opposite of what he wrote or maybe a copyist made an error. The rub in this thinking is that it easily allows for the thought that the Bible is just a book by men, and can be altered by another man.

This criticism is not to completely detract from this translation but to serve as a warning of how much power a translator has to shape his work whether his bias is out in the open or affects his work in more subtle ways. Over all its an interesting modern paraphrase translation with some refreshing and accurate wordplay but also some bias in transmitting the Greek to English.

The aliens get their due in this fun background book for Warhammer 40,000.
By Valnastar
A huge percentage of Warhammer 40,000 (aka 40K) background material focuses on The Space Marines as they are still the most popular miniature range for the tabletop game, but the aliens get their due at least a little bit in this fun background book for the popular science fantasy game. Fans of a particular alien race may be disappointed at the short amount of material devoted to their favorite "xenos," but the positive side to this is that nearly all of the aliens from 40K get some attention in this book; it's an alien autopsy smorgasbord! Please note that this book review assumes some knowledge of Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 game universe, so if you're reading this review and feeling lost, please check out Games Workshop's website for more information at games-workshop dot com.

The premise of the book is that it is a report based on the lab contents and notes of a "heretical" Imperial inquisitor. The report was supposedly made by an inquisitor sent to shut down the lab and document the contents before destroying them. The contents of each page are designed to look like a hodgepodge of notes made in haste about each specimen and document found in the lab. This includes notes on alien physiology and behavior with anatomical diagrams and more. There are even a few lesser known alien creatures documented in the book, though most material is devoted to well-known alien species like Orks, Tau, Eldar and Tyranids.

At the time of this writing Amazon is selling this book at a huge 37% discount off the list price and I definitely think this book has enough fun background in it to be worth buying at such a bargain price, although the list price is a little steep for what is here. In fact, I've only rated this book with 3 stars because of the steep list price, which I feel is a bit excessive. In short, buy this book here at Amazon at a nice discount if you enjoy these background books even a little bit, but don't bother with it at the full list price unless you enjoy these types of books enough that you feel you absolutely must have it.

Xenology: Chock full of background and a fun read to boot
By Sean Patten
Xenology is not the most visually stunning art book to come out of the black library, but it does have loads of background that should intrigue any 40K fan, and an amusing framing story with a surprise twist at the end! The data is presented in the form of an "Inquisitorial Analysis", with dissection notes, eyewitness reports, heretical texts secured from Inquisitorial vaults, and first hand observations.

Several mysteries unfold as the reader progresses though the findings, told from the viewpoint of an ill-fated Inquisitor and a reluctant Genetor Scientist. It reads like a murder mystery, with a horrifying ending that goes well outside the scope of the characters involved.

There are several new aliens described (Umbra), in depth information on races only alluded to before (Hrud), and comprehensive summaries verifying information on races already well developed (including insight into the roles and motivations of all four types of Eldar). Most importantly, connections are drawn between each case study that point to the role the Slaan and C'tan play in the fate of all the races of the galaxy, as first suggested in Codex: Necrons. In fact, this is an excellent companion book to the Necron codex for those hungry for more background information on all the races of the 40K universe.

To sum up, the value of this book comes from the amusing presentation of a wealth of xenos information, and the black tale that unfolds as the reader explores its contents. The art should be considered a bonus. Enjoy contents of this book while you can, for the Inquisition will not be far behind...

Missed Opportunity
By stephanie
I was excited when I saw the title for this book. Anyone who has done Active Directory administration, especially in big environments, knows the benefits that can come from being able to work with automated processes. Windows PowerShell is a perfect companion for AD, which is why the AD cmdlets were some of the first to be developed. The ability to take complicated AD management processes and simplify them down to custom commands or restrict administration to just the tasks needed is very powerful.

I should have seen it coming from the comment in the Introduction from the author that he was not trying to teach everything about AD or PowerShell. Unfortunately, this book really does neither subject well. I reads more like a manual for AD PowerShell cmdlets than a topic level book. At one point, the author lists 7 pages of parameters for a command. Certainly, that is the kind of thing is better referenced in a help file than listed verbatim in the book (especially since the list was probably outdated by the time the book shipped). In some cases, I think the help file for those cmdlets is actually more useful because of the number of examples provided.

The book is divided into chapters based on AD technologies (promoting DCs, managing DNS, managing users, etc.), but only goes into the barest detail on how to do that, with minimal discussion on why you would want to do it or how PowerShell changes the game for long time AD admins. One of the previous reviewers mentioned not reading the book on a computer because you may be tempted to just copy and paste the PowerShell samples -- my opinion is that IS exactly what the book was designed for. The author even includes parameters in some examples that aren't necessary or don't work in the example context while pointing out that you can include them because "it won't hurt" and they may be valid in some cases. I personally don't think that AD PowerShell commands are the kind of thing that I want admins to run who don't understand how the command works or what the different options are doing.

The scripts in the book are very basic and mostly just wrappers around oneliners. The best scripts that the author includes are actually from Ashley McGlone, a Premier Field Service Engineer at Microsoft who did an awesome series on PowerShell and AD at Microsoft Virtual Academy. THERE is a good series if you want to learn how PowerShell can be used to manage Active Directory.

There was only one chapter on AD Cloud management, and that revolved mostly around getting connected to Azure to deploy a virtual machine with AD on it. There was no discussion of managing Azure AD or how a hybrid on-premise-Cloud AD solutions would work or what advantages or disadvantages there were. Azure AD is not the same thing as on premise AD. Any organization that is running Office 365 already has an Azure AD and that management becomes even more important in those cases.

I wish this book had been more about how PowerShell can help with some of the issues that have been traditionally difficult for Active Directory management with the GUIs or providing automation solutions that make reporting or troubleshooting easier. Instead, it was a book for copy and paste admins -- a dangerous subject for that type of administration.

I wanted to like this book because I think this is a topic that could be really powerful, but I would hesitate to recommend this book either because it wouldn't expend sufficiently on what is already available in the help files or it would provide just enough information to the dangerous.

A thorough tour of most of the tasks of AD admin using Powershell.
By Paul Richwine
Everything in the Microsoft flavored sysadmin world is going Powershell, so if you're still a click-Next admin you're not being as productive as you could be (paraphrased from Jeffery Snover).

The title of this book was right up my alley: I am on the AD admin team of a large enterprise, and I use Powershell for many of my daily tasks. Although I've been using posh for nearly 2 years I still have a lot of room to improve. I try to read Powershell books on the weekends so I was glad when this title arrived. But I must admit to being a little disappointed once I started reading. This is not a book to "take you to the next level" but it is a thorough tour of most of the tasks of AD admin using Powershell.

I can see two audiences for this book: 1. Admins new to Powershell who want to follow along with a very knowledgeable instructor as they demonstrate the steps needed to build an AD infrastructure from the ground up. This is exactly what this book accomplishes; in fact I believe it was written step by step as the author built a home lab using almost nothing but Powershell. The problem for this green audience is that many things are assumed - for example there are a few custom cmdlets that appear with sparse explanation. 2. The other audience is made up of sysadmins who are more experienced but may not work in AD with Powershell often enough to internalize all of the commands and syntax and need a reference full of examples. I can see many admins copy-pasting from this book into the Powershell IDE - and there's nothing wrong with that, as long as it's a learning experience.

As for me, I am more in the second audience and will keep this book on hand as a reference. But for my fellow admins looking for an introduction to AD administration with Powershell, this will leave some knowledge gaps that you will have to fill elsewhere. Maybe that isn't such a bad thing, as it should cause you to want to learn even more.

Book to follow by "try yourself examples"
By vidockq
Deploying and Managing Active Directory with Windows PowerShell
For the ease of view I have split this review it into several different parts.
• Intro
• Target audience
• Book content
• Conclusion
Intro:
I am a system administrator working with mainly Microsoft Products, and as such I keep an eye out for most IT blogs out there. When I say that a new book was released by Charlie Russel I immediately took the opportunity to review it.
For those who do not know who Charlie Russel is you can get more information about him here:
(...)
(...)
http://www.amazon.com/Charlie-Russel/e/B001IGNJLM
(...)
Needless to say he has been 12 years MVP at Microsoft and wrote a lot of books I used to start on my career to become a System Administrator.
Target audience:
Who is this book for? Should I buy this book?
I will be straight here, this book absolutely requires you to have Medium Knowledge of AD (Active Directory) and Beginner knowledge of Powershell. (More on this in Book content)
This book is absolutely perfect if you started using PowerShell or plan to start using it and want to delve deep into managing AD using the command line.
Book Content
This whole book is a “do yourself” example. You should be aware that the book has no information regarding how to set up your environment and goes on the premises that you have the know-how to set your own virtual test laboratory and get working on the examples from the book.
Even when you get an information on the test laboratory it is never in-depth, so take that into account.
Like I said this book requires Medium knowledge in the field of AD (Active Directory), this is because the book is structured on a basic schema:

1. Task to do
2. Short Explanation of “Task” Role
3. Example doing the task using GUI (optional)
4. Example of doing the task using Powershell
5. Example of Powershell in a more “friendly” manner (basically same Powershell command/script written in a more readable way)
Thus it will never go into deep dives regarding AD or Powersheel, but instead it will give you a short information about it and what it goes on a global level and then gives you an example to follow.
Conclusion
The book is 257 pages long (short read), and it’s definitely a book to go throw by “trial by fire”; meaning that it’s best to get it on paperback or on your kindle/tablet and not on your PC, so you will not be tempted to just copy-paste the commands/scripts.
This is best because you want to have your Lab set-up and actually do and write all the Powershell commands and script there yourself. If you’re new to Powershell this will help you a lot, since it’s so unforgiving on the syntax used, you will get a lot of errors but throw that practice you will get the hang of it and become better proficient in it.
Thus I would recommend this book to anyone that is currently working with AD and wants to explore Powershell and leave the GUI behind.
I would have liked if the authors of books like this would actually include a tutorial on how to set-up your test environment, this would help a lot more people to go into books like this and try them.
3/5 starts.

Your Number 1 Goal is to Graduate!
By Sweet Girl
The author repeats this mantra several times. It's something to keep in mind when times get tough. No matter what, your number one goal during your 2 or 4 years of nursing school is to GRADUATE. Delegate housework. Work part-time or not at all (if possible). Study, study, study!

She does encourage students to get their BSN, not just their ADN, and brought up several good points about that. She gives ideas in finding money for school and has a section from nurses entitled "What I Wish I'd Known Before I Chose to Major in Nursing."

She gives tips on how to be more efficient, organized, be a good student, how to take a test and reduce test anxiety, how to study better, make tbe most out of clinicals, and how to prepare for school.

I loved this book. I actually had checked it out of the library because of the first person's review (didn't want to waste my money if it was a bad book), but now I plan on buying it. This is a great book and has tons if useful information inside. I think this is a must-have for every nursing student.

Awesome guide!
By Martha S. Horton
I agree with Sweet girl's review, I just started taking my first classes and this book has helped me to stay motivated and on track. She gives excellent advice and practical tips that I'm already using.
I'm also planning on buying it, so I can read over and over, especially
every time I get side tracked by all the stuff that doesn't matter. I also love the motto Graduating is your goal. My husband just finished grad school and wishes he would have read that book before he started, even though he's field is counseling. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting pursue nursing. In fact I'm buying it for my cousin who is going to nursing school too. I also read How to survive and maybe even love nursing school, which was really good but reading it, really stressed me out,it focused a lot on the difficulty of nursing school, it had a lot of information and tips as well, but I think Mosby's guide gives more practical to the point advice.
