About the Author
Samir Elias has a Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters in economics from the University of Technology in the UK. He worked as a research engineer developing new products at two different private companies in the US. In 1994 he raised venture capital to start his own engineering company which was sold to an international company in 1999. Between 1994 and 1997 he was involved in a real estate investment partnership in Ohio and Massachusetts. During that period he was intrigued by stock and option trading and how mathematical principles can be aplied to enhancing trading and investment profits. In 1997 , using his experience in computer modeling of multiphase dynamic systems which was the focus of his doctorate dissertation, he developed a mathematical approach using convergence divergence charts to model long term stock movements .This model was simplified enought to obtain effective results using hand drawn charts once a week. With the proliferation of the internet and increased interest and accessibilty of short term trading he developed unique combinations of technical indicators to predict short term stock movements with over 75% accuracy. In 1997 , he sold his real estate partnership and started trading part time at Insight Securities in Wichita KS until they closed in late 1998. Presntly , he is a full time option and stock trader and investor.

It's working for me

I traded stocks and futures for the past 13 yrs using various platforms, including Tradestation, Streetsmart Pro, E-Trade and others. I hired mentors & tutors, took classes, seminars, hands-on schools, read books [you should see my stack],a nd worked with other traders who had sophisticated trading programs.

I stayed away from options, since in my personal research I concluded that due to the time deterioration nature of options and their complexities, I saw no way of trading options and winning-- ever.

While I kept losing money, I heard that my uncle was doing well in options. I couldn't believe it. I didn't believe it-- since I also heard that he didn't have a computer and lived in rural Georgia, talking only to his broker by phone and working with paper statements. I made it a point to interview my uncle, only to discover I indeed had a "rich" uncle with a "system" that worked. This "system" he merely said was "common sense"-- but after he explained it to me, the lights came on.

I then searched Amazon for books that specifically talked about the ONLY TWO options transactions my uncle traded with: money-secured puts and covered calls. I was led to this book by Dr Elias.

The first 11 Chapters are the most important-- and it is important to note that when Dr Elias is talking about calls or put transactions in these chapters, he is almost exclusively talking about money-secured puts and covered calls. There is only one place in the book where he warns you that to BUY a call or BUY a put places you in a position where you are working against the clock and that every minute, your investment is losing value. Take that warning to heart!

I also need to correct page 33, where the text should read [correction is in caps:]:
"Selling one CALL option implies that you are selling CALL options on the amount of shares of stock you are holding. Selling two CALL options implies that you are doing that on twice the shares you hold." The editor mistakenly used the word 'put' where CALL should be, in explaining a covered call.

Indeed, this book covers in detail, and with profitable variations, my uncle's strategy. The last two chapters on Thinking outside the Box and the Epilogue are valuable. The other chapters were of little value to me since I already know a great deal about chart patterns, reversals, candle sticks, doji's and the like. All this is good information, but -- in my view-- "filler" to the 'real meat' of the winning strategy of obtaining recurring option premiums, over and over and over again.

I have been trading this strategy for 3 months and I am up 15% with no losses.
Try getting that from a CD or Money Market Fund.

A Profitable book written by a successful trader

I do not have to tell anyone that most trading book writers derive the majority of their income from seminars , trading camps and books rather than from actual trading. Only a handful of trading book authors are successfull traders, and It was a pleasure to read a book written by someone who trades for a living.
Before moving to my current location, I belonged to a local trade group run by the author with a maximum allowable membership of fifty. In the eight months I belonged to the group, I saw traders including myself make profits above $3000 per week using methods most of which are detailed in this book, as well as the other trading book written by the same author.

After moving to my current location , I continued implementing the strategies I learned from the trade group as well as others from the book. Although my results do not match those obtained when I was an active member of the group, I am able to cash in between $30,000 to $50,000 per year on a 150,000 trading account.
I obtained these results by selling options on three to five stocks each month and collecting a net premium of near $1000 per stock. This is easily achievable if you pick the right stocks using ideas from author's other book "Explosive Stock Trading Strategies" and then combine them with concepts from this book to determine the right option parameters such as implied volatility , premium and expiration date.
For those who are interested in specifics, I start by scanning for stocks that meet the " Falling Knife" and "Momentum Shift" setups in the book "Explosive stock trading strategies". These setups offer, in addition to a high probability of upward reversal , unique option properties. These are :high option implied volatility and high vega, implying that the premium moves significantly with moderate moves in volatility. These properties allow selling low risk out of the money puts at strikes below market price for hefty premiums. Once the stock moves up the high vega results in a significant drop in the premium allowing me to buy back the option often for less than one quarter of the premium I obtained. Try this strategy and you will see that you do not need more than a handful of such stocks to create a respectable monthly income on your account.

Many creative ideas that will make your profits soar

This book contains a large number of ideas that can deliver big profits while at the same time being different from run of the mill option books. I used several concepts in the book to trade options successfully with impressive profits. One highly effective strategy I used recently is the VPV up reversal where the author mentions on page 240 that such setups result in a quick move to the next resistance. SCTY gave a VPV reversal signal on 6/11/2014 son I sold puts on the stock on June 12 at a $55 strike and expiring June 21. I chose the $55 strike since it is the next resistance. I obtained a premium of $4.90 per share for 20 contracts or a total of $9800 in premiums. The stock moved to above $64 on June 17 and the option premium was down to $0.05 resulting in a net profit of $9700 in 5 days. These are the kinds of profits this book is capable of delivering if you take the time to implement the creative concepts presented. I strongly encourage readers to apply the falling rectangle and VPV reversal which has proven at least in my case to deliver monster profits. Check the examples in the book on VPV reversals and you will see that spotting the move in SCTY was quite straightforward.

A nice, visual collection of the Usual Suspects

My German cookbook shelf is, I admit, rather extensive. In addition to buying just about every reasonable option I could find, I've taken to buying German cookbooks in the native language -- especially if they're for things I know perfectly well I'll never make. (I have a traditional pastries book that's a case in point, but I like _imagining_ I'll bake them.) So I was a bit surprised to find this cookbook at my local library: wow, a book I don't own! It's very nice indeed, though not a must-have -- at least not for me.

The cookbook promises to be, basically, Grandma's home cookin' -- and that's what you get. There's no attempt towards modernity, or variations on traditional dishes (the biggest exception I can find is beef roulades with hard-boiled eggs inside instead of dill pickles). That's perfectly fine, if you're looking for a good basic collection of German food -- accompanied by attractive photos, since this _is_ a DK publication.

The cookbook is organized by type of meal: soups and stews; everyday meals; Sunday dinners; sweet main courses and desserts; cakes and cookies; jams, jellies, and preserves. I found most of the "usual" dishes among the hundred-or-so included here, such as green bean, pear, and bacon stew; stuffed peppers; Rhine saurbraten with potato dumplings; goulash. And a few that we rarely see here in a German restaurant but are common in Germany: cheese spätzle; mushroom goulash with bread dumplings, maultaschen (Germany's answer to ravioli).

If you have a German grandma (or wish you did) you'll find the recipes themselves comfortably satisfying. They may not be EXACTLY how you remember it (as the maultaschen recipe headnote comments, "There's only one true recipe for Swabian meat-filled pasta pouches -- and each family has a different one") but I'm sure you'll like it.

Frankly at this point I have enough German cookbooks that I don't feel the need add another Basics to my set. But if I were shopping for a good starter cookbook to give to a friend, I easily could choose this one. You'll probably be very happy with it.

Fantastic

These are the recipes I ate growing up in a German Canadian community. The book is fun to read and the recipes are varied and delicious (so far). Cooked the Weiner Goulash recipe tonight and we wanted to drink the sauce out of the dutch oven - it was so good. Not particularly gourmet or light in style (did you expect "lite" German food?) but everything is made from scratch, directions are clear and there are wonderful photos and stories accompanying the recipes. My only complaint is the index seems to list dishes, alphabetically by title only. Still, I give this 5 stars because it's such delightful cookbook and I've yet to see anything else resembling it on the market. I'm so happy these two authors collaborated and created this cookbook.

A special gift of authentic, often heirloom, German recipes

If you are looking for a German cookbook, this might be just what you're looking for. There are a lot of authentic, traditional recipes--NOT Americanized. Some of the recipes are from three, four generations back. There are all the German recipes you expect, plus many that you may not be familiar with. There are some old-time techniques also, and that makes for some very interesting times in the kitchen. These are old-time gourmet recipes, NOT new and innovative takes on traditional German food.

Besides the authors sharing so many old and very authentic recipes, here are some things I liked about the cookbook: Great pictures of every recipe, very vibrant colors; information on where the recipes originated; interesting stories associated with many of the recipes; most everything is "from scratch" (you won't see any canned goods in the ingredient lists, except maybe a store-bought fresh pasta or bouillon cubes here or there), and I really appreciated the terrific (though few) fruit and veggie jams, butters and pickles.

What I didn't like and why I knocked it down a star: It has a very poor index--such a shame. Also, the authors' writing is a bit "home-grown" and in no way sophisticated.

I'm still very happy to have this book in my collection. The old recipes are very special, and I greatly appreciate the authors sharing them.

About the Author
David Rosenwasser teaches at Muhlenberg College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, where he has been since the late 1980s. He and Jill Stephen created and implemented the Writing Across the Curriculum program there through a series of faculty seminars. During these seminars, Dr. Rosenwasser and Dr. Stephen discovered that while content faculty from across the disciplines maintained disciplinary-specific writing protocols, they essentially wanted the same thing from student writing: analysis. From this premise, WRITING ANALYTICALLY was born. Dr. Rosenwasser received his B.A. from Grinnell College and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in the theory and history of narrative. His current interests include contemporary Irish literature and comic theory. His most recent literary papers include a study of the contemporary Irish writer Edna O'Brien in relation to the work of Joyce and Yeats as well as an analysis of the politics of Bruce Springsteen's albums during the Bush presidency, written collaboratively with a political science professor.

Jill Stephen teaches at Muhlenberg College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, where she's been since the late 1980s. Along with David Rosenwasser, she created and implemented the Writing Across the Curriculum program there through a series of faculty seminars. In these seminars, they discovered that content faculty from across the disciplines, although they maintained disciplinary-specific writing protocols, essentially wanted the same thing from student writing: analysis. From this premise, their textbook, Writing Analytically, was born. Stephen worked in the expository writing program at New York University under Lil Brannon and Cy Knoblauch. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and received her Ph.D. from NYU on rhetorical theory as evidenced in Renaissance poetry and prose. Aside from her writing with Rosenwasser on composition and writing program administration, she writes on poetry, especially Renaissance lyrics. Her current interests include the poetry of Frank O'Hara, Emily Dickinson, and contemporary Irish women writers.

About the Author
Bruce L. Bowerman is a professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in statistics from Iowa State University in 1974 and has over 32 years of experience teaching basic statistics, regression analysis, time series forecasting, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate students. In 1987 Professor Bowerman received an Outstanding Teaching award from the Miami University senior class, and in 1992 he received the Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Richard T. O¿Connell, Professor Bowerman has written ten textbooks. In addition to the earlier editions of this forecasting textbook, these textbooks include BUSINESS STATISTICS IN PRACTICE and LINEAR STATISTICAL MODELS: AN APPLIED APPROACH. The first edition of FORTECASTING AND TIME SERIES earned an Outstanding Academic Book award from CHOICE magazine. Professor Bowerman has also published a number of articles in applied stochastic processes, time series forecasting, and statistical education.

Richard T. O¿Connell is an associate professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has more than 27 years of experience teaching basic statistics, statistical quality control and process improvement, regression analysis, time series analysis, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate business students. He also has extensive consulting experience and has taught workshops dealing with statistical quality control and process improvement for a variety of companies in the Midwest. In 2000 Professor O¿Connell received an Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Bruce L. Bowerman he has written ten textbooks. In addition to the earlier editions of this forecasting textbook, these textbooks include BUSINESS STATISTICS IN PRACTICE and LINEAR STATISTICAL MODELS: AN APPLIED APPROACH. Professor O¿Connell has published numerous articles in the area of innovative statistical education and statistical quality control. He is one of the first college instructors in the United States to integrate statistical process control and process improvement methodology into his basic business statistics course. Professor O¿Connell received an M.S. degree in decision sciences from Northwestern University in 1973, and he is currently a member of both the Decision Sciences Institute and the American Statistical Association.

Anne B. Koehler is a professor of decision sciences and the George and Mildred Panuska Professor of Business Administration at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She received a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1968 from Indiana University. Her interest in forecasting began with an internship at the J.M. Smucker Company in 1980. Professor Koehler began teaching statistics in 1975 and forecasting in 1990. She teaches courses in basic statistics, regression analysis, time series forecasting, and survey sampling. She is co-author of a paper in the JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN STATISTICAL SOCIETY (1997) that presented a state space model for the Holt-Winters multiplicative model and provided that method with a sound statistical basis. Professor Koehler has numerous publications, many of which are on forecasting with seasonal models and exponential smoothing methods. She is an associate editor for the INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FORECASTING, and for many years was the editor of the software reviews for that journal. She served on the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Forecasters for 10 years. She is also as associate editor for DECISION SCIENCES and has twice served on the Board of Directors of the Decision Sciences Institute.

No Theory

This book was required for a Time Series Course. I would not recommend it if you can avoid it. There is no theory in this book. The book's answer to time series analysis is put the data in the software and read the output. Don't expect any real understanding of time series.

I believe this book is easier to read than Brockwell's, but it doesn't go as deep into the subject. It's a great book for an introductory semester.

The ``hard-boiled'' hero, 35 and divorced, is a man of possessions--a collection of imported whiskeys; interests--old American movies and cooking; but no emotions. Which, coupled with his brilliant work on computers, makes him the ideal candidate for a mysterious aging scientist holed up under the sewers of Tokyo. Here, protected by a waterfall and by flesh-devouring creatures, the INKlings, from the two competing information organizations that control everything in the country, the scientist has devised a perfect secret code by operating on the brains of selected computer workers. The hero, summoned to the scientist's lair, is presented with a unicorn's skull and told of a project called ``The End of the World.'' Alternating between these encounters with the scientist, the scientist's granddaughter, and bully-boys bent on finding out what he knows, there is the story of the ancient walled town at the end of the world. In this home of one-horned beasts, a young man arrives, is separated from his shadow, and is set to work interpreting the dreams of the skulls in the library. The two worlds increasingly connect and at the end fuse, with the hero, though certifiably dead, for the first time morally and emotionally alive and resistant to the society's pervasive control of the individual. One of the best books I've ever bought on a whim...

I purchased this book on a whim - the descriptions sounded interesting enough to merit a look.
Boy was I stunned by it. One of the best books I've read in a long time and probably one of the best novels I've read that's been written in the last 20 years.
Beautifully written (and translated) it spoke to many different sides of me. The novel brilliantly fuses a number of different cultural genres (science fiction, mystery, film noir, fantasy, magical realism, "cyberpunk") into a mix that, amazingly, works very well. Try to imagine a collaborative effort by Garcia-Marquez, William Gibson, and Walker Percy and you almost might be able to envision what this book feels like to read. Who else but a Japanese author could make such an intriguing pop culture cocktail?
Besides being a genre-bender, the premise of the book and the questions that it raises concerning the relationship between humanity and technology, the soul and the mind, and the individual and society are quite thought provoking.
Did I mention that the book is very funny at times too?
This is unlike any other book you'll ever read. Definitely worth checking out IMHO.

The Interconnectedness of All Things

This is simply the best book I have ever read! I was hooked from the first page and drawn into the world of the narrator as subtly as one is drawn into a dream. The linking of the subconscious and conscious elements of the mind are at work here, and this is what makes this book all at once so wonderful, disturbing and enlightening. It is a psychological masterpiece and lays bare the interconnectedness of all things- the people in our lives, the places, the choices we make, our dreams, desires, longings and regrets and most importantly, the often inexplicable and enigmatic relationship between our subconscious and conscious mind. The masterful way Murakami interweaves the chapters begins with a divergent simplicity and gradually progresses to a complex, synchronistic web/mandala in which all points share a beginning yet have no end.

WHICH WORLD DO I BELONG TO?

Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World follows two distinct and parallel storylines, both with unnamed narrators who might or might not be the same person. In the first storyline, the narrator is a "Calcutec", a computer specialist working for "The System" to protect data against the "Semiotecs", an organization of powerful black market information pirates. Called down into the sewers below Tokyo against regulations and against the law, the main character agrees to "shuffle", or encode the work of a nutty professor who says he has discovered a way to make bones talk! His life might be in danger though because all the major powers want a piece of this new technology. This plotline alternates chapters with a more fantasy type idyll about a town surrounded by an impenetrable and unscalable wall, in which the narrator tries to figure out who he is and how he came there. There are other inhabitants but all their comments are pretty cryptic. But there's some bizarre stuff going on. For example, there are unicorns grazing around the town, you lose your shadow, and the narrator is given the job of "reading dreams" from the skulls of strange beasts! He must set about figuring out how to escape unless he wants to be trapped there forever.

This novel was weird but refreshing. I thought it was pretty clever of Murakami to almost write two books in one, the first being a cyberpunk adventure and the other a strange surreal fantasy. But it worked. Don't worry, these two stories within a novel do have a purpose in being joined together, even though you might not understand all the "physics" talk when explanations are given. You get the gist of it. Harold Bloom once said that what gives a novel its lasting greatness is that it has to be strange. Murakami more than lives up to this thought and makes you feel as if you've entered a new world. That's a good thing. It really gives you a sense of wonder and mental adventure which you don't find too often in literature these days. I look forward to reading his other works.

If you liked this book, I would highly recommend viewing a Japanese anime called Haibane-Renmei which was greatly influenced by the fantasy parts of Hard-Boiled Wonderland.

About the Author
Dr. Frank Kreith is a Professor Emeritus in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Science from the University of Paris in 1965. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Fellow and Honorary Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and recipient of the ASME Medal. The ASME International established "The Frank Kreith Energy Award" in 2005 in recognition of his contributions to the field of renewable energy and heat transfer. His areas of interest include heat transfer, thermal engineering, and solar engineering. He has been a consultant in the field of heat transfer engineering in many parts of the world.

It's a good book, but it has room for improvements

It's a good book, but it has room for improvements. It has no answer to the problems at the end of the chapters, I think that at least a few of the problems should have the answer. And my copy of the book had some problem in the printing process. In the middle of chapter 6, there are about 10 pages that are not supposed to be there. They are from a complete different section of the book.

Eye-opening, riveting, enlightening, uplifting--Martha Graham's life and times seen through the discerning, appreciative eye of Agnes de Mille. This is an earthier, more human Graham than in her own Blood Memory (p. 839); it is also a more detailed look at the era. Graham's vision was so focused that she was unaware of, or thought unimportant, the surroundings, players, intrigues; she was also extremely private. De Mille can and does give us the fuller picture. De Mille met Graham in the early Denishawn days in California; their lives and careers intertwined ever after with varying degrees of intensity. They were friends, worked with many of the same people, and kept a critical eye on each other's work. Graham's strength and will were apparent certainly by her teens; her genius was apparent early, too. De Mille follows the development of that gift, and along the way explores in depth Graham's contemporaries, technique, and the dance world generally. This is meaty, detailed stuff, and all in de Mille's wonderful voice. On Doris Humphrey: ``...she analyzed everything. It was not enough that a fall or lean could be lovely. She had to explain why...Her own dancing seemed to have little personality, while Martha's was electrifying.'' On the relationship between a choreographer's physique and his work, and Graham's in particular: she claimed that she always choregraphed falls on the left because the heart is on the left. ``Maybe so,'' says de Mille, ``but to this dancer it seems that it really was because her left leg and thigh were stronger and more stretched out.'' De Mille drops a number of bombshells here, particularly in her discussions of Graham's emotional life. She had stormy, sometimes physically abusive (by both parties) relationships in her life. De Mille describes the two most intense crises: Graham's failed marriage to Erick Hawkins; and her forced retirement as a dancer, in 1968, at age 72. This latter precipitated a physical collapse that de Mille names convincingly as being alcoholic. ``Martha got well, in her own way, in her own time, and without alcohol. Martha rose from the dead, and verily, she was changed now.'' A loving, respectful, but always cleareyed account of the human Graham. A must for fans of Graham's, de Mille's, dance- -indeed, anyone wanting a clear picture of a creative era that is fast drawing to a close. Brilliant overview of a dance genius

It is unfortunate that this book is out of print, for it gives a overview of one of the most brilliant choreographers of the twentieth century. The mind and values of Martha Graham are exposed in detail by the author, and it serves its purpose in giving the curious reader insight into the life and dance technique of a woman who single-handedly developed one of the most original forms of movement to this date. Anyone who is overcome by watching the dances of Graham will definitely appreciate this book, written by a person who had known Graham for fifty-eight years. Included in the book are an excellent collection of black-and-white photographs, both of Graham and some of the people she worked closely with. Indeed, Graham was a beautiful woman, and her personality, as well as her physical beauty, are exemplified nicely in these photographs.
The knowledge one can gain from the reading of this book makes it well worth the time, for by reading it one can understand how Graham developed her technique, interestingly without any government aid; there was no National Endowment of the Arts to assist in her endeavors. Graham viewed dance as a celebration, and eschewed the attitude of those who danced for monetary gain. One reads of Graham's relationship with Louis Horst, and of the popularity of the writings of the philosopher Frederich Nietzsche among Horst, Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Isadora Duncan.
Graham's father told her that "bodies never lie", and this statment apparently had a major influence on her resulting "philosophy of dance", as well as the influence of Ruth St. Denis and Erick Hawkins. The author discusses the differences between the dance technique of Graham and Humphrey, the latter being characterized as mathematical by the author, the former emotional. But I find the Graham technique straightforward to view from a mathematical standpoint, if one is so inclined.
The technical aspects of the Graham technique are brought out nicely in the book, one example being the marvelous description of the "spiral fall" and its recovery. One also learns of the use of "plastiques", i.e, the posing and moving in scarves and costumes by the dancers. Also, it is interesting to learn of the omission of mirrors in the early Graham studios; lest the student, in the author's words, "drown in his own image". The class routine for the Graham dancers, particularly the floor exerices, along with the spasm of the the diaphragm, are the most well-known manifestation of the Graham technique, and are discussed nicely in this book.
It is fortunate that Graham was able to find such dedicated students for her classes. Forcing to live a frugal existence, these students found her dances a "religion that they served", according to the author. Indeed, if one has ever viewed modern dance performances of the Graham technique, one can see this attitude in the dancers, as though they were priveleged, and moving to a unique traceform in space never before executed.
The Graham technique is brilliant, and it forces one to rethink preconceived notions of what movement must be, and instead speculate on what it could be. Graham in her works made it readily apparent that gravity is real, but that it need not be a total master. Even on the floor the Graham dancers are in control, at least momentarily, interpolating brilliantly between order and bodily dissonance. Martha Graham, as protrayed by the author, was an innovator and a determined individualist, and has given us a unique collection of traceforms, both in our memories and in books and videos, that will embolden us and refresh us always.....

The History of Modern

Agnes de Mille, a distinguished and popular choreographer in her own right, and a sometimes intimate friend of Martha Graham, has written an outstanding biography of this iconic woman. The story of Martha Graham is inevitably the story of Modern Dance-- which many would say she invented--and the history of American artists--of which she was the queen.
De Mille's book is both extremely informative and thoroughly enjoyable. She gives you the history you need in order to put Graham's revolutionary dance technique in context, and then she offers personal insights and observations on the life, love affairs, personality, triumphs, and tragedies of the inimitable Martha.
A portrait of a truly incredible, inspiring, tiny giant of a woman by another who is at least her equal in intellect and probably in artistry as well.
For anyone interested in dance, this book is an absolute must.
