Really useful
By Dimitri Shvorob
To get the negatives out of the way: it's unfortunate that, having invested in appealing graphic design - the book looks just so much nicer than the spartan O'Reilly titles - Addison Wesley have not provided the author with similarly solid editorial support, resulting in a book that definitely feels rushed. There are typos, cosmetic blemishes (one regular annoyance is a table that's too wide for a page - one could fit it using a smaller font, but instead the table ends up split across twice as many rows), a couple of statistical blunders (on pp. 172 and 263), things that could have been left out, things that should have been included (oddly, the chapter on joins never mentions outer joins, and, in fact, does not explain what a join is) - and, finally, time and again, things that should have been explained better. I do not feel that "R for Everyone" is the best available introduction to R, and continue to endorse Robert Kabacoff's high-quality "R in Action" in that capacity.

Where "R for Everyone" differs from "R in Action" - and, coming to the positives, where it wins out - is in intermediate-R territory. One important example is coverage of "ggplot2". Whereas "R in Action" discusses the "old school" R graphics, "R for Everyone" goes with "ggplot2", becoming the second popular book (after Winston Chang's "R Graphics Cookbook") to discuss the package - and although its explanation of "ggplot2" syntax is sketchy, the samples found throughout the book do build into a useful "ggplot2" gallery that actually brought me over the fence. "plyr" package, an important data-manipulation aid, is another example, and another "R in Action" no-show. So is "data.table". So is "knitr", used to produce reports. So is "rcpp", used to interface R and C++. So is R package-building. (You will notice that the topics become more advanced. These are introductions rather than substantial explorations, but awareness is a valuable thing). In the book's second half, when discussion moves from R to statistics-with-R, the author continues to manage to find original material; statistical explanations may be brief - this is not a textbook - but examples, and pointers to useful R utilities, are much appreciated.

I own just one R book - literally, "The R Book", by Crawley - but "R for Everyone" will be joining it; this has got to be a compliment. Kudos to Jared Lander for writing an original, substantial, useful book.

UPD. It's June 2015, and second edition of Robert Kabacoff's "R in Action" is finally out - but the changes are incremental, and my endorsement of "R for Everyone" stands.

Good book, but…..
By JoeT
This was probably the hardest book to rate of any I have rated on Amazon.
For what it's worth, I am an R user and I like to pick up books on R to see how other people do things. The fact that I was exposed to packages I have never used was a plus and definitely make the book worthwhile.

This book is basically 2-distinct books: The first 13-chapters are the basics of R. They are quite good and if you are new to R you will find them extremely useful.

Virtually all the remainder of the book is using R for various statistical techniques. This is where I had my problem. If you get this book with the assumption that you will learn statistics at the same time, then you will be disappointed. The problem is that while the book does tell you HOW to do the test, that's about it. There isn't much in terms of explaining what it is you did or how to interpret the results. I suppose if you look at it as a book to show you how to use the various R commands to run a t-test or an ANOVA, then that's OK, but I don't see value if you do something, get a value and not understand what it's for. But, if you are already statistically savvy, then this might not be an issue.

One thing I did not like though is the use of ggplot. Now, I fully appreciate that ggplot will in fact generate far better graphics than the core plot routines in R. No question. But, ggplot in itself is a book, and in many cases, I just cut-and-pasted the code into R to see what happens. There wasn't really a whole bunch of explanations as to why you were doing what you were doing. Given that this is more an intro book (given the initial chapters of R that gives me this impression), I would have considered using the core plot routines instead. More work and less attractive I know, but if your audience are people who are new to R, then why not stay with the core routines?

A very poorly written R book
By Paulo C. Rios Jr.
In spite of the good reviews, the reality is very different. This is a bad R book with many shortcomings that range from bad explanations of the basics (functions, data types) to no explanation at all when showing the use of R in data analysis.

The book has a nice layout in color, but this is misleading. Long R output without proper formatting for a textbook is always displayed because the author wrote the book directly in the code as he himself states and printed it out as it is. And it feels like. Most of the text looks just like comments in a program code. The treatment of functions is very poor (they are also very rarely used in the book) and the explanation of the different R data types lacks depth and is misguided. Silly examples are used to show the basics as in printing the author's name. The later chapters get even worse, literally damaging all the more interesting parts, where the book leaves the very basics and moves on to data handling and then to advanced data analytics in R.

The part of the book that deals with data analytics is sincerely a bit of a tragedy. Rushed text with no clear or sometimes whatsoever explanations of what is actually being done, with just little text and lots of code output and charts taking most of the space. Ironically the book that is "for everyone" makes hard for "everyone" to understand anything that uses statistics, about 60% of the book!.
It is harder even for those trained on statistics or related "hard" sciences.

For example, In chapter 22, right in the beginning the author uses a value for the predicted number of clusters in the data under analysis. This value is taken out of the blue and only later it is shown how this value can be found using two methods. The first method doesn’t bring any useful value (and you wonder why it is shown). The second method does bring a good value but it is not explained in the text how this method's results should be interpreted to determine this value. Apart from two rushed sentences that speak of a standard deviation being used, whatever this standard deviation is coming from as the author says nothing about the algorithm clusGap that he used for such. I did some research and found out that the author's LiveLesson video course, that follows the book almost page by page, does mention, albeit quickly, how to interpret the second method’s result above. But not in his book… Unfortunately this video course also suffers from the same problems that the book does, as it is mostly a live reading of the book with the author typing the code.

In fact, almost anything related to data analytics is very poorly explained, if at all. Another example, out of many, is the section 20.3 on Generalized Adaptive Models. After preprocessing the raw data used for the analysis, a few charts are displayed (without much explanation of the code used for which) and then the data analysis code output is shown without any explanation. Two features of the data, CreditAmount and Age, are displayed in charts where they are smoothed, but there is no explanation about what for. And the analysis stops right there without any further explanation. What could be said in a few sentences is left out.

Most of the data analytics examples also show very poor performance, leading the user to think why data analysis is used if it performs so badly and, if it performs well, why the author didn’t select any better example.

There are also many pedagogical errors, minor and major ones. I will just mention a few taken from chapter 12 as an example:
1) Many variables are created with the function assign in a loop but actually only two of them are used. What for? On top of it, the same loop is coded again later with just a different variable name.
2) The function merge is used with the same column names, although the author states that “the ability to specify different column names (..) is the most useful feature of merge” before doing so with the function join from the library plyr. Then you wonder what difference is being shown.
3) It gets worse. In a rather convoluted way to show how to merge different data frames, the author introduces two new features of R, eval and parse, just by passing and without any specific examples or further explanation. In this same convoluted example the author also uses the R function Reduce in the most complicated way with the dots, without first showing simple examples and what it is for. Only then later down in the text he goes on to explain what Reduce does but fails to mention that it can only be applied to binary functions. The text states that “Reduce can be a difficult function to grasp”. If it is, it would deserve a better treatment, not as a side note, explained in an example that is related to something else (how to merge data frames). It should also have a full explanation of how it can be used.

R is a beautiful language that can be well explained. It is not hard to show its power in data analysis with short but clear explanations. It’s regrettable that this book misses its stated goals so badly, when it could have done otherwise brilliantly, as its author seems capable to do a much better job. So I can't recommend this book. There is actually a shortage of good R books in the market, but "R in Action" (second edition is coming), "The Art of R Programming" and "The R Book" are much superior choices.

Great Volume of Questions, but many Superfluous ones
By J. Morton
This book is good because of the sheer number of questions it offers however these questions are not very representative of what appears on the in-service for residents. PEER Review is definitely better. There are also many questions that I believe are more opinion based on practice style than actually grounded in facts. Also there are many questions that go beyond the scope of EM and seem to be included just so they can reach their 1200 number.

Took and passed the ER Boards three times so far- this was a disapointment.
By J. Monastero
Many questions here but only a few that are bread and butter Emergency Medicine. Many seem to be preparing us for the Internal Medicine Boards since there are numerous questions that seem to be related to issues and treatments that will not be diagnosed, started, or even treated in the Emergency Department. When question pertinent to EM are presented, they are mixed with minutia details that reflect the bias toward the Internal Medicine Boards. The field of Emergency Medicine is comprehensive enough that the additions of minute and confusing ( often conflicting) answers does little to the preparation for the ER Boards. Straightforward questions about straightforward conditions that are seen in every Emergency Department would be difficult enough and should be the focus of such a preparation book. It seems at times, this book goes out of its way to be as cryptic or deceptive as possible.

Amazon.com Review
The story of Don Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia family, inspired some of the most successful movies ever. It is in Mario Puzo's The Godfather that Corleone first appears. As Corleone's desperate struggle to control the Mafia underworld unfolds, so does the story of his family. The novel is full of exquisitely detailed characters who, despite leading unconventional lifestyles within a notorious crime family, experience the triumphs and failures of the human condition. Filled with the requisite valor, love, and rancor of a great epic, The Godfather is the definitive gangster novel.

From Library Journal
Diehard Godfather fans play second banana to no other subculture in their obsession with the minutiae of Puzo's novel and Coppola's films. These dedicated fans will be most disappointed by the new audio version, although perhaps only an hour of material is missing, but casual aficionados will barely notice the abridgment. Missing are the subplot involving Sonny's mistress, Lucy Mancini, and Dr. William Kennedy and the descriptions of the regional Mafia chieftains that precede the commission meeting at which Don Corleone flushes out Don Barzini as his number one rival. Actor Joe Mantegna does a fine job throughout, largely resisting the temptation to put on voices for too many of the characters. However, this cannot be said for his Don Corleone. Perhaps it is vengeance: after all, Andy Garcia, as the late Don's nephew, Vincent Mancini, put the hit on Mantegna's Joey Zasa in Godfather III, but whatever the reason, Mantegna gives Corleone a raspy falsetto-imagine the Pillsbury Doughboy with a tracheotomy-that ranks as one of the worst Brando impressions ever. Also, Puzo's chilling ending in which Kay converts to Catholicism with the hope of saving her husband's soul is inexplicably transformed into a chamber-of-commerce-style bromide about the family's new life in Nevada. Still, the popularity of Puzo's novel 27 years after its publication makes this abridgment a must-have.

Time to Read this on your Kindle
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading The Artisan: An Artistic Assassin Thrillerwhich is a great read and an excellent, satirical but non-slapstick view of Mafia Families and it made me think of how much I loved The Godfather (Signet). Even though it's been years, this book pulled me in and read as fresh and enrapturing as it did the first time.
4 reasons why you need to read it again:
1) it reads like the movie, but there are so many things in the book that are not in the movie
2) this is such a big part of American lore and legend, it feels like coming home
3) it will remind you what an amazing story teller Mario Puzo was and you will go back and read all his books such as Omerta: A Novel
4) we read to be taken away and this book will take you far, far away.

So don't say, "I already read this." say., "It's time to read The Godfather (Signet) again!"

Mario Puzo's "The Godfather" belongs to that legion of novels whose most salient quality has been misguidedly denounced as a vice: its capacity to make the artificial appear "natural." At the time of its release, the first critics viewed the novel was regarded as a roman à clef as critics attempted to identify the "real" Johnny Fontane and Don Corleone -- i.e., the people in real-life mob families who were represented by the Fontane and Coreleone characters. To do this, they and more sophisticated critics later disregarded the work's patent fictional quality. I would argue that "The Godfather" is a profoundly mediated work, an inspired bricolage that takes elements of Christian mythology, American and Italian literature, and transforms them into something irreducibly new. This means that the relationship between the work and the reality from which it takes its materials is extremely problematic. Thus, "The Godfather" is not merely an index, a symptom, or a document of its time, for it does not carry its historical materials fully formed into a new context where they remain unchanged. On the contrary, "The Godfather" has revealed itself to be deeply prophetic, because it has created new perceptions that have subtly altered our understanding of society. The tensions of the age, Puzo's and Don Corleone's, are intermingled with novelistic tensions, and together transform the matter of history.

Simply Brilliant Literature--A True Classic!
By Kiwes
They just don't write books like this anymore! Bravo~~well done! You'd think out of the many books I've read, that The Godfather would have been one of the classics to cross my eyes' path, but for some reason I had never read it. Hey, better late than never, and I have to say it lives up to everything I ever heard about the novel.

Mario was a brilliant writer and to learn how he came to write this classic is classic and somewhat shocking in and of itself. Having owed money to some loan sharks and not having a way to dig himself out of that pit, out came The Godfather. Truly amazing.

I fell in love with the Corleone family and all of its dysfunctional inner workings, but they were a family nonetheless. The characters were so vivid and alive, and the trickery that took place was masterful. I must say, there were things that even I didn't pick up on, but later figured out from the characters' guidance. Absolutely outstanding novel and truly a literary work of art. This is the type of book every writer dreams of writing. You just know there's that one good story that's going to put you over the edge, and while you wait, thank God for stories like this one.

Now I'm going to download the movie, because believe it or not, I never saw it either. I plan to read the entire series and watch the films to see how they match up. My grandma always told me to save some things for later in your life so you'd have something to look forward too, and I have to say, my grandma was right, as she usually was. I'm glad I waited to add this classic to my many books under my belt. Outstanding!

Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence, by Christian Parenti

From Africa to Asia and Latin America, the era of climate wars has begun. Extreme weather is breeding banditry, humanitarian crisis, and state failure.

In Tropic of Chaos, investigative journalist Christian Parenti travels along the front lines of this gathering catastrophe--the belt of economically and politically battered postcolonial nations and war zones girding the planet's midlatitudes. Here he finds failed states amid climatic disasters. But he also reveals the unsettling presence of Western military forces and explains how they see an opportunity in the crisis to prepare for open-ended global counterinsurgency.

Parenti argues that this incipient "climate fascism"--a political hardening of wealthy states-- is bound to fail. The struggling states of the developing world cannot be allowed to collapse, as they will take other nations down as well. Instead, we must work to meet the challenge of climate-driven violence with a very different set of sustainable economic and development policies.

Review
San Francisco Bay Guardian
“Christian Parenti offers an unusual and compelling analysis of violence through the lens of the environment….Parenti also turns a sharp eye upon the repression, surveillance, and counterinsurgency that first-world nations have employed to combat growing violence in water-scarce, conflict-ridden regions, and calls for a more enlightened approach.”

Jan McGirk, ChinaDialogue.net
“Tropic of Chaos is a must-read. It telegraphs an urgent message of how quickly climate catastrophe is morphing around the globe.”

Astra Taylor, Bookforum (online)
“[A] harrowing tour-de-force… if you read one book on climate change this year (and really, who can bear to read more than one?), Tropic of Chaos should be it. The way you understand the changing climate, and the resulting conflicts that serrate our world, will be transformed.”
Nomi Prins, Truthdig
“Tropic of Chaos” is a wake-up call to humanity, particularly to the richest nations (with the U.S. at the top of that list) that produce the greatest amount of carbon that accelerates climate change. The detrimental effects of our environmental gluttony at the heart of our economic avarice are not blurry fatalistic hypotheses—they are here, today. As “Tropic of Chaos” illustrates so clearly, we can’t afford, morally or economically, to be lax about the impact of catastrophic convergence on the global population or allow private profit-motivated interests to ruin civilization.”

Foreign Policy In Focus
“[An] impressive new book… If Naomi Klein, Mike Davis, and James Howard Kunstler had teamed up to write a book, the result would read something like Tropic of Chaos… Tropic of Chaos illustrates the strengths of merging climate projections with left historical analysis of the poverty and conflicts that define much of the Global South. The result is an important map key to the (possibly near) future, if not strictly a climate book. Viewing climate change as an amplifier of existing inequality and disorder results in a split-screen, one that deals as much with the last century as the current…there is no denying the relevance and immediacy of the book’s main thesis, powerfully illustrated by the current drought-related famine in Somalia… Tropic of Chaos not only asks the right questions. An argument could be made that it deals with the only questions currently worth asking. Climate change is the X Factor lurking behind every other conversation over the direction and shape of our civilization. If the temperature goes up by the predicted six degrees Fahrenheit, Parenti is correct to conclude that all bets will most certainly be off. ”

Socialist Worker
“[Parenti] has written a sweeping discourse on the collision set in motion between the natural and the social world…[Parenti’s] book remains an important and cogently written, if frightening, contribution to our understanding of the planetary crisis and how we got here.”

Social Funds
“Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence, by Christian Parenti, is a rarity among nominally popular books, in that it seeks to describe what the world will look like if climate change is left unchecked. Exceedingly well-researched…it nevertheless lays out a narrative all the more frightening for those living in a world whose leaders seem increasingly resistant to doing anything about climate change.”—

Booklist
“Parenti takes readers from the drought-afflicted savannas of Kenya, where armed farmers are killing each other over limited water supplies, to shantytowns in Brazil, where scarce resources are driving desperate citizens into the deadly drug trade. . . . While the landscape he surveys is grim, Parenti offers several tactics to encourage better resolution of its problem, including raising awareness among political leaders and recognizing that progress will come only through creative compassion.”

The Georgia Straight, Vancouver, Canada
“There’s much to admire in Tropic of Chaos, notably the breadth of Parenti’s research and how he ties it into a coherent, big-picture view of the world. The book also offers timely insights into the origins of this month’s famine in East Africa.”

Washington City Paper
“Parenti’s exploration of how, say, a water shortage in equatorial Africa causes nomadic herdsmen to roam far afield—only to be met by a rival tribe that raids their animals and kills their men to protect fertile land—illustrates the domino effect extreme weather can cause anywhere in the world.”

The Daily
“Like the climate scientists he invokes in his analysis, Christian Parenti seeks to understand a dizzyingly complex problem. . . . His book embarks on a tour of the so-called ‘tropic of chaos,’ the equatorial belt where much of the world’s population lives, and where changing weather patterns have led to conflict and destitution.  At each stop, Parenti draws connections between violence and global warming.”

Publishers Weekly
“Scathing. . . . Parenti’s careful reporting and grasp of politics and economics support the book’s urgent message—that impending global chaos is all but assured unless the developed world finds the political will to imagine a better future.”

Kirkus Reviews
“An investigative journalist’s tough analysis of how some of the world’s most vulnerable states—those with a history of economic and political disasters—are confronting the new crisis of climate change. . . . A dark look at a looming world crisis.”

Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums
“A brilliant weather report from the near future of world politics.”

Naomi Klein, author The Shock Doctrine
“A richly investigated and original account of the role climate change is already playing in contemporary conflicts. This glimpse of the future we most fear arrives just in time to change course.”

Andrew J. Bacevich, author of Washington Rules: America’s Path to Permanent War
“To read this disturbing, indeed frightening book is to appreciate fully the fix we’re in.  On the one hand is a looming planetary crisis, the product of climate change, resource scarcity, and widespread poverty.  On the other hand is the misguided conviction, to which Americans in particular cling, that military power, deftly employed, will insulate the developed world from these problems.  It won’t, Christian Parenti argues.  He’s right.   We can’t say we weren't warned.”

Pablo Solón, Chief Climate Negotiator and Ambassador of Bolivia to the United Nations
“This important book highlights a new dimension of climate change. It’s not only about the loss of biodiversity, glaciers, and island states but also about a new era of conflict, violence and chaos.  Parenti shows us how climate change already produces war and aggression.  But he also invites us to think about real and structural alternatives to unbridled capitalism and runaway climate change.”

Sudhir Venkatesh, author of Gang Leader for a Day
“Tropic of Chaos is a penetrating look at natural disasters and the humans that make them happen.  This engrossing, deeply researched account takes us on a journey around the globe to uncover the social production of catastrophe.  A book that’s hard to ignore, and difficult to put down.”

Michael Brune, Executive Director, Sierra Club
“Christian Parenti’s exhaustively researched Tropic of Chaos presents a disturbing idea: that the species which caused the climate crisis will be the one most affected by it.  This powerful book charts how climate-driven violence is already taking hold.  If we don’t act with urgency, a troubled future awaits us.”

Saskia Sassen, Professor, Columbia University and author of Territory, Authority, Rights
“We know we confront multiple catastrophic events.  They have been analyzed and debated.  Like no other book I know of, Parenti gives us the vortex itself.  He does so through knowledge and facts in a manner that brings it all to life.  What a great book, really extraordinary.”

Rethinking Schools“Tropic of Chaos is an important book for teachers, especially because of the wretched treatment of the climate crisis in mandated corporate-produced curriculum materials. . . . [W]e need to devise ways to incorporate [Parenti’s] analysis into our curriculum.”

A Essential Tome for a Dangerous Time
By Jeremy Freeman
The great writer Walter Benjamin once pointed out (and here I a going to greatly paraphrase) that us modern humans are unique amongst species in our inability as a large group to plan out multiple escape routes; that is to say that us humans can march blindly into certain disaster, whereas any other animal sensing danger would beat a hasty retreat. Mr. Parenti's book is a revelation as it takes a clear eyed glimpse into our undeniable climate crisis; and with that glimpse he illustrates the real threats that crisis represents to both human life and to the democratic ideals that we cherish as American citizens; and finally Parenti maps out at least some possibilities of an exit strategy from this crisis. That these ideas are presented are of utmost importance. Fortunately Mr. Parenti goes beyond just stating abstract notions -- he brings these ideas to life with some generally exciting first hand reporting that takes us from the hardest hit crisis zones of Africa, Afghanistan to our own backyard border zones of Texas and Arizona. In effect he personalizes the overwhelming concepts of global warming by introducing us to the goat herder, the Indian logger, the DEA agent whose lives have been totally turned around by the steady increase in temperature and erratic weather patterns.

Most books about the climate crisis can overwhelm us with negativity and a sort of end-of-days mentality. Mr. Parenti's book is the opposite. It is a book that virtually pulses with a love for democracy and belief in the power of human beings to finally do the right thing. And it is a great read as well. What could be better?

Tropic of Chaos
By Shawn Clark
Last week I bought a new book before my flight to San Francisco, " Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence.", by Christian Parenti. Indeed, this book is well written, well researched and is deserving of the 5-stars by two reviewers on Amazon. More to the point though, Parenti presents a history of many regions of the world framed through the climate of the area with an eye on how the climate may change in the near future (the next 50 years). Unfortunately, in areas like Somalia, the near future is today.

Somalia presents a tragic case study of the violence of climate change. As I write this, hundreds of thousands of refugees are fleeing Somalia for Kenya to find relief from intense drought and the resulting famine. The Miami Herald (10 Aug 2011, AP article) printed an Associated Press article reporting the rape of many women refugees once they reached the Kenyan boarder by groups of armed men. "One 30-year-old woman who watched two of her five children die as they trekked through Somalia was raped after reaching what she hoped would be the safety of Kenyan soil." (AP, 09 Aug 2011) According to the report, some of these armed men would order the woman's brother to rape her. If he refused, he or she or both would then be killed. Once these people manage to cross the border, their future does not get much better. Kenya does not have the resources to protect or feed the 400,000 refugees that are already staying in a camp built for 90,000. "Officials here say they are being overwhelmed by the influx of tens of thousands of Somali refugees, and can't stem the attacks. " (AP, 2011)

Parenti's book is certainly an important book for anyone interested in looking at a brief history of how many societies have changed when the climate changes - Somalia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Mexico and others are discussed - especially during a drought. More important is the understanding of the dynamics at play right now, today, during many of our debates in this country: The war in Afghanistan, immigration across our border with Mexico, and our current debt criss.

I highly recommend this book

This is a must read book!
By Cal Page
This is a must read book for anyone interested in climate change and its impact on humanity. It's also a must read book for everyone else that wants to continue to live in our biosphere. Which is to say, it's a must read for everyone.

The author starts out introducing us to a number of themes he carries forward. Specifically:

1) Climate change causes stressors on planetary civilization and these changes threaten American national security. This is not the author's point of view, but that of our military. Want an example? Consider Afghanistan. Why do they grow poppy? They've been in prolonged drought (a stressor as a result of global warming), and poppy only uses one fifth the water wheat does. The US runs around burning their crops, whereas the Teleban supports the farmers and helps them feed their children. [So are we going to solve the Afghan problem? Use critical thinking and decide for yourself.]

2) Societies can adapt by 'armed lifeboats', whereby they secure their borders against mass migrations, increased internal militarization, and conduct counterinsurgency operations abroad. The author sees this as a malignant adaption to Global Warming and warns us with case after case where this fails. Unfortunately, as the author points out, this is the direction the US is taking.

3) Societies can also adapt by learning to live within the limits of the planet earth. [Hey, I CAN use a solar panel to heat hot water instead of producing CO2 or nuclear waste.]

4) Counterinsurgency destroys societies and eventually fails anyway.

Next, the author takes us on a tour of the world, concentrating on regions between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Sections are dedicated to Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Impacts of global warming and resultant counterinsurgency operations are discussed.

Lastly, the author again focuses back on the US. It seems that big-oil has waged a successful campaign to discredit global warming here and this is discussed in detail. Obama has even delayed putting solar collectors back on the White House. [A weak and feckless president who should have never been elected (and I'm a Democrat).]

Finally, the author offers a prescription for moving forward. Many other authors are ready to abandon capitalism entirely (as it got us into this mess), but Christian does not. He feels that capitalism can morph/change into a benevolent la-la being that will suddenly embrace what the yippies and hippies have been saying all along. All that is needed is for a price to be put on Carbon emissions (a Carbon Tax), and the invisible hand of Adam Smith will soothe things out and reduce CO2 emissions to zero.

[You can see I part company with the author on his last point. You really think our national congress, that is bought and paid for by big oil will ever pass a Carbon Tax? If you do, you are one of the most Pollyanna people on earth. Instead, it is up to us, everyone, to think globally but act locally. To paraphrase Kennedy, I should ask not what I can get the congress to do, but what I can do myself to ameliorate global warming. And I can do plenty. I can first read up on the issues (skipping the pablum of the American corporate press). Next, I can think critically. Finally, I can act. I can buy locally grown food so there's less of a carbon footprint. I can install solar panels. I can buy a more fuel efficient car. And so on. HEY, IT'S UP TO US TO SOLVE GLOBAL WARMING - NOT SOMEONE ELSE.]

All investors are told that if you want to earn high rates of returns, you must take on greater risk. Of course, the groundbreaking value investing strategies of Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett, and Charlie Munger have shown that it is indeed possible to keep risk to a minimum while still making a reasonable profit. The Dhandho method takes their successful approach to investing one step further and shows how you can actually maximize rewards while minimizing risk.

Dhandho (pronounced dhun-doe), literally translated, means "endeavors that create wealth." In The Dhandho Investor, Mohnish Pabrai demonstrates how the powerful Dhandho capital allocation framework of India's business-savvy Patels can be successfully applied and replicated by individual value investors in the stock market. The Patels, a small ethnic group from India, first began arriving in the United States in the 1970s as refugees with little education or capital. Today, they own over $40 billion in motel assets in the United States, pay over $725 million a year in taxes, and employ nearly a million people. How did this small, impoverished group come out of nowhere and end up accumulating such vast resources? The answer lies in their low-risk, high-return approach to business: Dhandho. This book will show you how to use that same technique to generate high returns in the stock market.

Pabrai's hedge funds, Pabrai Investment Funds, have outperformed all of the major indices and over 99% of other managed funds. $100,000 invested with Pabrai in 1999 was worth over $659,000 by 2006—an annualized return of over 28% after all fees and expenses. In this book, Pabrai distills the methods of Buffett, Graham, and Munger into a user-friendly approach applicable to individual investors. Combining their legendary investing wisdom with the business acumen of the Patels, Pabrai lays out the Dhandho framework in an easy-to-use format that will help any investor significantly improve on their results and soundly beat the markets—as well as most professionals.

Pabrai also details each deceptively simple Dhandho concept in a straightforward, entertaining fashion, with individual chapters that explain why you should: Invest in Simple Businesses, Fixate on Arbitrage, Invest in the Copy Cats Rather than the Innovators, and other simple but proven concepts for low-risk, high-reward Dhandho investing.

Praise for The Dhandho Investor

"Mohnish Pabrai is a relentlessly insightful thinker who delights in decoding the esoteric world of finance and also knows how to tell a good yarn. Whether you're mystified by what drives stock prices up and down on Wall Street or you're sure you know, you'll understand better when you read this book. Pabrai's tales of high finance and his clever examination of the core principles of deep value are packed with handy ideas you should use in your own investing."
—Stephane Fitch, European Bureau Chief, Forbes

"I read The Dhandho Investor from start to finish in one sitting—I couldn't put it down. Mohnish shares the 'secrets' of his extraordinary success and has made a significant contribution to the literature on value investing."

Managing Editor and founder of Value Investor Insight
Chairman of Value Investing Congress

"All of the techniques you need to attain high returns on your investments are here, explained through the examples of successful entrepreneurs and of Pabrai, himself an accomplished prodigy of Buffett's methods. Everyone must understand this methodology if they are to do well in the stock market."
—Timothy Vick, Senior Portfolio Manager, The Sanibel Captiva Trust Co.,
author of How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett

"The Dhandho Investor has nailed it! Pabrai has simplified the strategy for successful investing. 'Heads, I win; tails, I don't lose much!' I don't have to buy a whole business, just purchase the publicly traded stocks of a few 'right' businesses. I suggest this book to anyone looking to hone their investment skills."

This book was recommended by Phil Town on his InvestED podcast and it was right on the money (pun intended). Mohnish teaches investing through the story of the Patel family whose patriarch came to the US and spent his life savings to buy a single motel that nobody wanted. He risks it all on this one business, but he is young enough to recover from a loss if he couldn't make it work. His family lives in the motel and does all the work so he is instantly profitable because he has no overhead. He turns the business around and earns a good reputation as an innkeeper, then parlays the profits from that single motel into another one. He continues to bring family members from India to run his expanding motel empire.

We can relate this story to value investing in the modern world: buying a select few, good companies when nobody else wants them. Few, focused, big investments on companies that become undervalued through market fluctuations or bad news.

It's a great read and I highly recommend it.

Exceptional Book on Investing.
By Julio Perez
This is an exceptional Book on investing. It has a wealth on knowledge and explains
the investment models that Mr. Mohnish Pabrai uses to obtain superior investment returns.
They are the same as the ones used by Mr. Warren Buffette and Mr.Joel Greenblatt
but in his book they are explained in a more indepth and understandable way.
The book is entertaining with many examples of successful applications of superior investment methods.
And the best of this is that they are simple and easy to understand.

Mr Pabrai is gifted in investing, and in writing in a simple and entertaining way.
I highly recommend this book, it clearly explains investment strategies and tactics
that you may find in other books but they are not explained as clearly and easy to understand as in
The Dhandho Investor.

Thank you Mr. Mohnish Pabrai for sharing your valuble
investment knowledge.

Excellent
By N. Mulcahy
Pabrai describes his fine investing record in an actionable way. Too many books in this field focus on the arc of a career rather than the fundamentals. Buying and selling stocks is intensely practical and the best way to learn about it is to immerse oneself in the details of real investments.

Dhandho is also a good reminder that other cultures and traditions are instructive when it comes to understanding business and investment. Instead of more instances of guys in Brooks Brothers suits, we read about poor Indian immigrants and the characters from the Mahabharata. Pabrai is clearly proud of his own culture but these perspectives are also genuinely fresh and useful.

This is a book to buy for a curious, reflective 18 year old. If any of the lessons stick you will have done him or her a great service.

"She who held the reorganisation of society in Carlingford in her hands was a woman with a mission"

Lucilla Marjoribanks is determined to look after her widowed father and become 'the sunshine of his life' whether he likes it or not. Once installed back at home and presiding over her father's drawing room, she launches herself into Carlingford society, aiming to raise the tone with her select evening parties. Lucilla is optimistic, resourceful and completely without self-doubt, bt will her indomitable nature diminish her marriage prospects? Will she marry the wrong man to save herself from eternal spinsterhood? With its superbly flawed heroine, is Marjoribanks (1866) is a wonderfully comic depiction of the conventions and proprieties that rule a vacuous society.

An unacknowledged gem!
By A. MacEwen
This must be one of the funniest books I've ever read--I hadn't laughed out loud like this since Catch-22. The character of Miss Marjoribanks (that's pronounced "Marchbanks") is used by Oliphant both as a vehicle for social satire in the Victorian community and as an instrument to examine female modes of power in the Victorian home. The scene in which Miss Marjoribanks figuratively usurps her father's role as patriarch of the house by appropriating his place at the breakfast table is hilarious. Oliphant's book is wonderfully enjoyable and furtively serious--it may be light in tone, but it reveals a great deal about how a resourceful Victorian woman might seek modes and expressions of power within parameters that are very limiting.

The main character of Miss Marjoribanks is not intended to "grow" or "develop"--part of the pleasure of her characterization and her story is in witnessing how her single-minded mania as social director of her community compells her to overcome the obstacles thrown in her way by the novel's narrative. Why should we arbitrarily expose this book to aesthetic standards created by a handful of canonical novels? Miss Marjoribanks's characterization is as valid as any found in Austen or Trollope (though not necessarily as great as the best of them)--we must keep in mind that there was much more to Victorian fiction than what is revealed in the small quantity of canonized examples still read today. Oliphant was immensely popular in her day, she was Queen Victoria's favorite writer, and there were many contemporary critics who considered her to be one of the best novelists of that period.

In short, Oliphant's Miss Marjoribanks is a comic masterpiece, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any reader of 19th-century British fiction.

Funny and fetching
By Jay Dickson
If you were to cross Jane Austen's Emma Woodhouse with E. F. Benson's Lucia, the result (psychologically as well as chronologically) would be Margaret Oliphant's triumphant queen of Carlingford society, Lucilla Marjoribanks. Determined to show everyone an entertaining time (ostensibly "to be a comfort to dear Papa," even though her father tends to withdraw entirely from her noisy gatherings), the self-centered but always ingenious Lucilla engineers social triumph after social triumph in this very amusing mid-Victorian novel. There were many moments when I laughed out loud, or was genuinely surprised by Lucilla's cleverness in overcoming momentary catastrophes. This is the perfect book for anyone who has loved Austen, Trollope, or Elzabeth Gaskell's WIVES AND DAUGHTERS.

An absolute delight!
By Misfit
What a great find, and refreshing as it lacks much of the high melodrama so common in most 19th century literature. Miss Lucilla Marjoribanks comes home from school determined to be a comfort to dear papa and sets the good doctor and the entire town on their ears, with her brilliant manipulations.

The characters are wonderful, the story has lots of ups and downs that Lucilla is always capable of meeting with great ingenuity and fortitude. There are many wonderful moments and lots of laughter along with a few tears. Higly recommended, particularly for anyone who enjoys 19th century English literature.

From the Inside Flap
Foreword

Data structures is a course taken by every programming student in every college in the United States. A knowledge of data structures has been a fundamental part of every Computer Science curriculum since the early days of PLI and Pascal. Of course, data structures in now taught using the C++ language. Actually, data structure concepts are language independent.

Currently, there is a shift in both text book and trade books to teach data structures with objects. With the latest standards from the ANSI/ISO committee, you will find that the Standard Template Library (STL) incorporates many of the components featured in traditional data structures courses.

Typically, you will find books on data structures or books on the STL. However, we have failed to identify or find books that carefully weave the concepts of both data structures and the STL together. In this text, we will go beyond an introductory works and integrate (side by side) many of the concepts taught in a data structures course with the newest STL techniques.

As such, this book is an intermediate level book for students and programmers who have mastered the fundamentals of the C++ language. However, even at the intermediate level, this book will have a broad appeal to all programmers interested in both data structures and the STL.

This book is not intended to replace college level data structures books. Instead, this text is intended to supplement them with the latest STL concepts. With complete code examples, you should find the solutions to many of the programming problems that plague both students and programmers alike.

If you are involved with data structures—you need this book.

Supercharge your C++ code! Master data structures and STL together!

When you understand data structures, you can command many of the most powerful, efficient algorithms ever created! Better yet, the C++ Standard Template Library bundles dozens of these advanced algorithms in a simple, reliable, easy-to-use form. Now, you can learn data structures and STL together, with the first book that teaches them both: Data Structures with STL!

Renowned programming instructors William Murray and Chris Pappas begin with the intermediate-to-advanced C++ features you'll need to know first, including namespaces, void * pointers, generic types, and template development. Then, using extensive code examples, they introduce every aspect of working with data structures and STL:

  • Understanding STL extensible framework and components
  • Working with STL: containers, iterators, and algorithms
  • Dynamic memory allocation/deallocation
  • STL-based portable solutions for array creation, element insertion/deletion, sorting, element output, and more
  • Clean, seamless integration of iostreams and exception handling

Now's your chance to supercharge the performance and reliability of all your C++ code—and dramatically enhance your own productivity at the same time. Data Structures with STL shows you how-more simply and easily than you ever thought possible!

Unreadable and confusing, several errors
By N. Novik
The stated purpose of this book is to teach data structures and the use of the C++ Standard Template Library (STL) at the same time. Judging by the first chapter only (by the time I got to page 23, I was so disgusted I logged in here to write this review), it fails on both counts.
The writing style is an awful combination of chatty (exclamation points are scattered throughout the text) and deliberately over-technical. In just one example, the authors use the word "syntactically" four times in six sentences for no reason; the sentences would be utterly unchanged in meaning by taking them out. That's the kind of writing I've seen from students who are attempting to make themselves sound knowledgeable when they aren't really sure of their ground or don't know how to express concepts in clear, simple language.
The lack of clarity is bad enough, but on top of that there are several typos and factual misstatements just in the small section of the text that I read. The opening lines of the foreword:
"A knowledge of data structures has been a fundamental part of every Computer Science curriculum since the early days of PLI and Pascal. Of course, data structures in [sic] now taught using the C++ language."
So I take it no one teaches data structures in Pascal anymore? In C? In Java?
The authors then go on to talk about misuse and ignorance of C/C++ features and use as their example the perfectly correct line of C/C++ code:
iaccumulator = iaccumulator + 1;
They state that using this instead of
iaccumulator++;
is incorrect, because the postfix operator "efficiently instructs the compiler to delete the double fetch/decode of the incorrectly written translation, and to treat the variable iaccumulator as its name implies -- as an accumulator within a register, a much more efficient machine language encoding."
This is ridiculous. First of all, any halfway-decent optimizing compiler should translate the first version just as well as the second. In any modern machine with a decent number of GPRs, if the variable was being used frequently it would be kept in a register anyway. Not to mention that at least half the target audience for this text (students with basic C++ experience taking a data structures class) would find this a completely incomprehensible explanation.
The example code is badly formatted (excessively-long lines, inconsistent indentation, poorly-placed comments) and inelegant. I came across at least one typo in the code that was not only confusing but would not have compiled, so it's fairly clear that the authors didn't try out all of the code in the book. Judging by the number of typos in general, that means that the code isn't reliable.
I strongly advise anyone against purchasing this book. If you're looking for a good data structures textbook, I would suggest Sedgewick's Algorithms in C (parts 1-4). That book is lucid, well-organized, with many very elegant, concise, and correct code samples.

One of the worst, if not the worst, for both topics.
By Rawitat Pulam
Prentice Hall has quite good reputation for publishing good computer books. (Although my favourite is Addison-Wesley.) This one is not one of them.
As a Data Structures book, this book deserved -1 star. As a STL book, however, it does deseverd 2 stars. So, I give it 1 stars in total.
Why? This book has one of the worst discussion/explaination on data structures I've ever read. It definitely not for someone who's learning the topic. Since learning data structures require much more discussion, like those in Mark Weiss's books and/or Carrano, Helman, Veroff's books (those are very good, really!). And, more important, this book does not talk about many important algorithm at all (saying the name of the algorithm doesn't count). For example, where is the explaination of Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm, B+ tree, etc?
It's not for someone who know the topics either. Since if one knows Data Structures, he/she would pick up the better book on STL (like Josuttis's and/or Musser's ) to learn STL. And write a better thing than what available from this book.
As the STL book, it should emphasize more on STL. For example, in the Priority Queue topic, instead of showing the example using priority_quere class, the author used his own implementation. The STL's implementation were briefly mentioned, and that is not enough.
Programming style is not-so-good, and some of their usages of STL is not-so-good is well. For example, Floyd's all-pair shortest path algorothm (page 388-399), there is the array version of the algorithm which was about one-and-half page long. And there is one that they called "STL version" which is 5 pages long... what happened? why it is that long? The answer: they used 4 pages to initialize vectors. Now, my question: "Who uses/initialize the vector container this way?"
One more thing, main function should return int, not void.
Conclusion: If you want Data structures book, look for something else. And if you want STL book, also look for something else. If you want Data Structures using/with STL, you have 2 choices 1) get something else for each, and 2) find some other books for it (Michael Main's lastest and Timothy Budd's DS using STL do the fine job, though...(Budd's is better, but I prefered Weiss's over both).

Core Stuff
By Jay J. Smith
I completed a review of the authors Template book and submitted it earlier. Then I was reminded that I also owned their Data Structure with STL book so I thought I would comment on this book too.
The writers said they wanted to write a book that complimented college text books on Data Structures. The twist that that they used (and the reason I bought the book) was the integration of STL into the matter.
I think the writers assumed you knew something about data structures and wanted a book with solutions (in STL) for many data structure applications.
They accomplished their goal. The book is filled with many neat solutions to standard data structure problems all in STL.
Buy the book if you are a student taking a Data Structures course. Buy the book if you just want to understand the STL better.
