Kit Livingstone met his great-grandfather Cosimo in a rainy alley in London where he discovered the truth about alternate realities.

Now he’s on the run—and on a quest—trying to understand the impossible mission he inherited from Cosimo: to restore a map that charts the hidden dimensions of the multiverse. Survival depends on staying one step ahead of the savage Burley Men.

The key is the Skin Map—but where it leads and what it means, Kit has no idea. The pieces have been scattered throughout this universe and beyond.

Mina, from her outpost in seventeenth-century Prague, is quickly gaining both the experience and the means to succeed in the quest. Yet so are those with evil intent who, from the shadows, are manipulating great minds of history for their own malign purposes.

Those who know how to use the ley lines have left their own world behind to travel across time and space—down avenues of Egyptian sphinxes, to an Etruscan tufa tomb, into a Bohemian coffee shop, and across a Stone Age landscape where universes collide—in this, the second quest to unlock the mystery of The Bone House.

The Bright Empires series—from acclaimed author Stephen R. Lawhead—is a unique blend of epic treasure hunt, ancient history, alternate realities, cutting-edge physics, philosophy, and mystery. The result is a page-turning, adventure like no other.

Dis-jointed Story/Plot

First book in the series was interesting and raised expectations - not so much in the rest of the series books - story line fractured into too many seemingly unrelated plots -- lost interest to finish series.

The Religion of Socrates, by Mark L. McPherran, Mark L. McPherran

This study argues that to understand Socrates we must uncover and analyze his religious views, since his philosophical and religious views are part of one seamless whole. Mark McPherran provides a close analysis of the relevant Socratic texts, an analysis that yields a comprehensive and original account of Socrates' commitments to religion (e.g., the nature of the gods, the immortality of the soul).

McPherran finds that Socrates was not only a rational philosopher of the first rank, but a figure with a profoundly religious nature as well, believing in the existence of gods vastly superior to ourselves in power and wisdom and sharing other traditional religious commitments with his contemporaries. However, Socrates was just as much a sensitive critic and rational reformer of both the religious tradition he inherited and the new cultic incursions he encountered. McPherran contends that Socrates saw his religious commitments as integral to his philosophical mission of moral examination and, in turn, used the rationally derived convictions underlying that mission to reshape the religious conventions of his time. As a result, Socrates made important contributions to the rational reformation of Greek religion, contributions that incited and informed the theology of his brilliant pupil, Plato.

Review

“McPherran has no illusions that he will carry everyone with him in his conclusions. He is, of course, thoroughly abreast of this scholarly literature, and gives excellent annotations of alternative views, which enable one to disagree with him if one wishes. All he wants to do is to reassert the essential religiosity of this extraordinary and complex figure, and I think that he has done that with admirable thoroughness.”

—John Dillion, Trinity College Dublin

“This well-produced book is the fullest and in some ways the best discussion of its topic available.”

—International Studies in Philosophy

“This book is by far the most comprehensive and searching study of Socrates's religious commitments and their impact on his philosophy. McPherran painstakingly sorts through the testimonies of the relevant ancient sources and provides important and often controversial new interpretations of them.”

—Nicholas D. Smith, Michigan State University

“McPherran's book is the best full-length study of Socratic religion currently available in English. It is well written and well argued. It should be read by any serious student of Socratic philosophy or the religion of fifth-century Athens.”

—Hugh H. Benson, University of Oklahoma

From the prospective of an undergrad this is definitely a new way of looking a Socrates. I'm not sure I agree or am qualified to disagree with a lot of what is said but it is very different from my preconceptions on the subject. Contra the party line about Socrates and what he stood for, McPherran presents evidence for an extra-rational Socrates. Understandably this tweaks those who hold S to be the champion of reason and self doubt in the face of mysticism (me, before this book). What was of most value to me was that McPherran shows how this is not really an either or proposition. The Socrates of this book cannot be simply placed on one side or the other of the religion v. reason debate. Good reading for anyone that is interested in the life of Socrates.

The attempt to express, much less understand, the nature of the relationships inherent in transportation and its myriad components is a challenge for transportation educators. Fortunately, the book you hold in your hands explains many of these interactions and complexities, as well as the design problems that go with them. Another challenge that transportation engineering poses, as a comparatively young discipline, is that professionals have to constantly deal with a plethora of new problems that seem to crop up faster than they can be tackled. In short, transportation is an exciting field.

The purpose of this edition, like previous editions, is to cover the major areas of traffic engineering and transportation planning at an introductory level, and provide the student with a basic rationale and a set of design concepts. The primary audience for this textbook is upper-division undergraduates and master-level students studying for degrees in civil engineering, as well as those in urban planning, economics, management, and other related disciplines. The orientation of the book is pragmatic and multidisciplinary, providing both students and practitioners with a variety of worked examples illustrating the basic concepts, covering an unusually wide spectrum of topics in transportation planning and traffic engineering.

While the general structure of this third edition remains generally the same as in previous editions a number of chapters have been thoroughly revised in light of the Highway Capacity Manual, published in 2000 and issued by the Transportation Research Board, as well as the latest material on geometric design from the AASHTO Publications. In addition, three new appendices have been added to this edition. Appendix B covers the elements of statistics and probability that are frequently used in transportation engineering. Appendices C and D consist of material drawn from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, U. S. Department of Transportation, Washington, DC. Minor additions have been made in many of the chapters to reflect changes in design practice and policies that have occurred since the last edition.

Many students, professionals, and colleagues have been curious to know the significance of the Mobius band that you see on the cover of the book. We are flattered, and a word regarding it is perhaps in order. The Mobius band throws some light on the interdisciplinary character and complexity embedded in transportation, which is one of its unique features. It is a paradox with geometrical and topological characteristics that are fascinating and special. In reality, the Mobius band has only one edge and one side. If you imagine yourself standing on the band, you see two edges and two sides. But when you begin walking along the band, you eventually return to your starting place and find yourself on the other side of the band. Indeed, the Mobius band resembles the interdisciplinary nature of transportation engineering, embracing several areas of knowledge blending together—it is the one and yet it is the many. It drives home the point that it is just an accident of history that transportation engineering finds its home in civil engineering and that the recent advances in this discipline easily warrant a department of its own.

The authors are grateful to many colleagues, professionals, and students who have suggested improvements, and many of these have been incorporated in this edition. Several of our students, past and present, have assisted us in revising this edition; namely, Dr. PS. Sriraj, Dr. Cemal Ayvalick, Turan Arslan, Porson Chantra, Sagar Sonar, Sameer Patil, and Edward Anderson. We would also like to thank Peter T. Martin, Utah Traffic Laboratory, and Shashi Sathisan Nambisan, University of Nevada-Howard K. Hughes College of Engineering, for reviewing the manuscript. Jenny Kincaid and Margaret Lall lent invaluable assistance in proofreading sections of the book. We also acknowledge admirable support provided by Kevin Bradley, Sunflower Publishing Services, and Laura Fischer of Prentice Hall.

Finally, we would appreciate any suggestions, criticisms, and corrections from our readers.

The Ancient City: Life in Classical Athens and Rome, by Peter Connolly

In this superbly illustrated volume, Athens and Rome, the two greatest cities of antiquity, spring to life through the masterful pen of Peter Connolly. For the first time ever, all the evidence has been painstakingly pieced together to reconstruct the architectural wonders of these mighty civilizations. By re-creating their public buildings, their temples, shops, and houses, Connolly reveals every aspect of a person's life in glorious detail, including religion, food, drama, games, and the baths.
The first part of The Ancient City covers the development of Athens in the hundred years following the Persian Wars, which began in the 4th century B.C. These chapters encompass the Golden Years of Athens; the establishment of democracy; the building of the Parthenon, the Erechtheum, and the municipal buildings of the Agora; a typical Athenian workday; and the construction of the Long Walls.
Part II examines the development of Rome in the hundred years from Nero (emperor of Rome from A.D. 54 to 68) to Hadrian (emperor of Rome from A.D. 117 to 138)--the great building period of Rome. Visit Nero's Golden Palace and the buildings subsequently built over it, the Colosseum, the Flavian Palace, the Baths of Trajan, the Temple of Venus and Roma, as well as other buildings such as the Circus Maximus, the Theatre of Marcellus, and Trajan's Forum and Market.
In addition to reading about the great monuments and moments of classical Greece and Rome, readers learn about a typical day in the life of an Athenian and a Roman. They read about--and see--the houses people inhabited; attend 5-day festivals and go to the theatre; fight great battles and witness the birth of Rome's navy; visit temples and spend a day at the races. The fascinating artwork and vivid descriptions provide a window into the great history of these two extraordinary cities and civilizations.
The Ancient City is the crowning achievement of Peter Connolly's distinguished career. His illustrations and reconstructions have a unique authority, providing the starting point for a fascinating exploration of these cities and the lives of the people who inhabited them.

Brilliant Recreation of Life in the Great Classical Cities
By Jenny Jenkins
Peter Connolly's illustrations bring to life with artistic and historical precision the streets and buildings on Ancient Rome and Greece in a way that will entrance both knowledgeable scholars and young students. This book should find its way into every classroom and home library with any interest in the classical world, as Connolly breathes life into the kitchens, lavatories, temples and villas of this distant but very human world. Students will realize, yes, these cities actually were peopled by genuine humans! Publisher, waste no time in preparing an enhanced e-book version to bring Peter Connolly's illustrations into brighter, closer view!

Hard to give this book enough stars!
By pbk63
Having just visited Rome and Athens I wanted a book that explained some of what I had seen and also showed what are now ruins as they looked in antiquity. This book does that and a great deal more. From cutaway views to recreations and more important discussion of events and the history of each of these cities it is a valuable resource to which I have turned more than a few times. If you have been or are going to Athens and/or Rome this would be a wonderful book to study before you go, take with you (if room) and to enjoy on your return. If you are just interested in these cities in antiquity this book will not disappoint. If there were 6 stars I would give it to this book!

five stars!
By Stephen Ryder
Peter Connolly's art work is good just in itself that I could buy a book on his illustrations and reconstructions alone this book will make Ancient Greece and Rome come to life far more exciting then just reading another book on this topic when reading the information and seeing the illustrations gives you a far better idea of what life was like back then

One of the Best Marvel Stories Ever Written
By Mitch Nissen
One of the Best Marvel Stories Ever Written

Annihilation Conquest is a direct sequel to the 2006 Marvel event Annihilation (also collected in Omnibus format) written by the same men, Keith Giffen, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. This time around it is Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning taking up the lion's share of the writing whereas they only wrote the Nova section of Annihilation. The story is masterfully crafted from beginning to end. The art is superb in each of the various portions, from the tie-in mini series collected here to the covers to the epic main event. Tom Raney, Sean Chen, Paul Pelletier, Kyle Hotz, Timothy Green II, and the rest of the artists really pull out all the stops producing some beautiful and inspiring artwork.

For those of you in the know, the Marvel cosmic books from 2006 starting with Annihilation through 2010's Thanos Imperative and Annihilators was perhaps the greatest chunk of Marvel comic books ever produced. Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest and every cosmic comic book that resulted afterward are the reason Marvel Studios produced the Guardians of the Galaxy film (a testament to how wonderful these stories are). I was present at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con Marvel Panel in which authors Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning were present along with Jeff Loeb and Brian Michael Bendis. Every single person that came up to ask a question began by saying, "DnA (Dan and Andy), your cosmic Marvel books are the best thing Marvel is doing right now!"

Annihilation Conquest is a worthy sequel to Annihilation. This omnibus sadly is not without its flaws. The foremost of these is the layout of the issues inside. As with the previous Annihilation Omnibus the sections are split into their respective chunks beginning with Nova #1-3, Annihilation Conquest Prologue, Nova #4-7, Star-Lord mini, Quasar mini, Wraith mini, Nova #8-10, Nova Annual #1, Nova #11-12, and Annihilation Conquest #1-6. This layout is incorrect. Annihilation Conquest #1-6 and Nova #8-12 plus Annual #1 should be alternating until the finale. The correct reading order for the last 12 issues should be Nova #8, AC #1, Nova #9, AC #2 and so on ending with Nova #12 and then AC #6. These issues were originally released in this order as the writers intended it to be read. This layout keeps Nova involved during the main event and builds proper momentum towards the end when he finally returns for the climax. At least everything is included.

As a result of this improper layout of issues a major spoiler is revealed in a Nova issue that shouldn't be known until beginning the main event, that of Ultron being in control of the Phalanx. Clearly Marvel disregarded keeping that a surprise altogether by their choice for the cover. It's a magnificent cover to be sure. I know Marvel was trying to boost sales of this omnibus by promoting Ultron in congruence with this summer's film Avengers: Age of Ultron. When Annihilation Conquest came out originally Ultron's reveal at the end of AC #1 was a huge surprise that no one saw coming! A very exciting moment that ramped up the tension and excitement of the story. Here that secret and reveal are given away before you even read the book undercutting much of the WOW factor of the story.

The only other drawback to this collection is the partial inclusion of promotional materials. Marvel promoted this event by advertising the new character designs for Quasar, Adam Warlock, and Wraith. These are nowhere to be found in the book. They have included a one-sheet of Wraith which looks like a lead in to the others but none of them are there. These images can easily be found online and there is no reason why they shouldn't be included here. There are also several character profiles missing from the handbook. The omnibus is shorter than many others Marvel has produced so again there is no excuse for these missing materials.

Other than those I have no complaints. The writing and artwork are some of the finest examples of Marvel's catalog. My criticisms are solely based on the collection herein, not the story or creative talents. This story is the first grouping of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy and hands down the best Ultron story Marvel has produced. You'd be doing yourself a favor by getting this. Hopefully next year we will receive the War of Kings total epic collected in Omnibus format (in proper reading order this time). I imagine it would take two omnibi to collect that story in its entirety. Let's hope they treat the material with the detail and respect it deserves.

Another Epic Dose of Marvel Cosmic
By Dan Pace (feral atom)
This omnibus contains the 2007-2008 Marvel Cosmic crossover event to 2006's Annihilation event, collects Nova 1-12, Annual 1, Annihilation: Conquest (A:C) Prologue, A:C Starlord 1-4, A:C Quasar 1-4, A:C Wraith 1-4, A:C 1-6, and Annihilation Saga.

Extras include Handbook entries for all the characters in the event: Captain Universe, Deathcry, Groot, Halfworld, Mantis, Phalanx, Rocket Raccoon, Star-lord. Portfolio review from Timothy Green II (with Tom Raney, Nathan Fairbairn), sketches by Sean Chen, cover layouts by Adi Granov, Nova #2 cover pencils (Granov), Nova #11 & 12, cover inks by Alex Maleev, character sketches by Mahmud A. Asrar, comparison of Nic Klein's Nova Annual cover and the homage to original series Nova #1 cover (Rich Buckler and Joe Sinnott), house ad for Wraith by Clint Langely, and a great Afterword by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

Written by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Keith Giffen, Javier Grillo-Marxuach. Art by Sean Chen, Mike Perkins, Brian Denham, Timothy Green II, Mike Lilly, Kyle Hotz, Wellington Alves, Mahmud A. Asrar, Klebs Jr, Paul Pelletier, and Tom Raney.

While not quite as good, script-wise or even plot-wise, still Annihilation:Conquest is a fun cosmic adventure and showcases Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy as valid patrons of Marvel Cosmic. The production quality by Marvel is excellent and is printed by RR Donnelly Asia Solutions, which seems to produce the most superior printed works. The painted cover is gorgeous and a great selection of Ultron on his throne.

This omni and last year's Annihilation make me long for a return of epic Marvel Cosmic, the only worthy successor being the Guardians 3000 title that just ran its course (not coincidentally also scripted by Dan Abnett.)

Wraith had a lot of promise as a new cosmic addition to the Marvel pantheon, but, unfortunately, his mini-series and inclusion in the overall event didn't fulfill this promise.

In my opinion, the best cosmic artist is Paul Pelletier. Unfortunately, we only see two issues worth of his work. I would love to see him do another cosmic book for either Marvel, DC or Valiant (can you imagine him on Imperium?) I think he would be the perfect artist for the long-ago rumored Tony Bedard-scripted Silver Surfer story.

If you were lucky enough to purchase Annihilation omnibus, you will likely enjoy this omnibus. Highly recommended.

Update (7/16): As pointed out in the comment section, this collection has some fantastic artwork throughout.

Phalanx first appeared in Uncanny X-men 305 and full form in 312 (1994), for those interested.

Phalanx Conquest
By Jacob Alvarado
The universe is just finding stability after the Negative Zone invasion as Nova returns to Earth to get some R&R but the Earth he has returned to is a Post Civil War one where superheroes all hate one another and Nova runs into the Thunderbolts. Phyla-Vell has kept the Quantum Bands from the end of Annihilation and become the new Quasar as she works with Moondragon. Peter Quill is helping set up a new Kree War-Net to stop anymore Annihilation events but that turns out to be the beginning of the end as the Phalanx machine race is able to infiltrate the Kree War-Net. Kree space is then blocked off from the rest of space.

As with Annihilation we get the character stories that lead to them joining up in the big group event. Nova, just as with the last event is the best of the bunch but the 3rd set of his stories were not well placed in the Omnibus as they do give away parts of the story that hadn't happened yet. Nova must fight off the Phalanx as they attempt to control him using Gamora and Drax to bring him in to the fold. We follow Peter Quill as he becomes Star-Lord again and his Guardians of the Galaxy team is assembled as they try to take back Hala. Quasar is being spoken to by a mysterious voice leading her to the person needed to end this conflict but her Quantum Bands are failing and the Super Adaptoid is on her and Moondragon's trail. This mysterious being they are lead to is Adam Warlock. Next is Wraith, who wields a mysterious weapon that can disable the Phalanx. The Kree, used as puppets by the Phalanx capture him, Super Skrull and Prax who must break out of containment. We continue with Nova as he visits Knowhere before heading to the Phalanx homeworld looking for a way to beat them, this is the part where it is revealed in passing that Ultron is controlling the Phalanx despite the fact he has appeared yet.

Now the main story is all these characters coming together to bring down the Ultron lead Phalanx Empire. The High Evolutionary comes into play since Adam Warlock plays such a major part.

The book contains in-depth characters profiles on many of the events characters, cover galleries of Adi Granov's awesome work. The art is different for all the series included; I thought Nova, Star-Lord and the main event had the best stuff.

Out of money and out of options after her yearlong exile, Eleanor Schreiber agrees to join forces with Kingsley Edge, the king of kink. After her first taste of power as a Dominant, Eleanor buries her old submissive self and transforms into Mistress Nora, the Red Queen. With the help of a mysterious young man with a job even more illicit than her own, Nora squares off against a cunning rival in her quest to become the most respected, the most feared Dominatrix in the Underground.

While new lovers and the sweet taste of freedom intoxicate Nora, she is tempted time and time again by Søren, her only love and the one man who refuses to bow to her. But when Søren accepts a new church assignment in a dangerous country, she must make an agonizing choice—will the queen keep her throne and let her lover go, or trade in her crown for Søren's collar?

With a shattering final confession, the last link in the chain is forged in The Original Sinners saga. It's the closing chapter in a story of salvation, sacrifice and the multitude of scars we collect in the name of ecstasy—and love.

The First Wedding

NOW, THIS WAS A HAPPY ENDING.

It was all Nora had hoped for, all she had prayed for, and she couldn't stop grinning as the music began—Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary.

She smiled even wider when two elderly gentlemen in traditional servant's livery opened the great oak double doors with a flourish befitting the exalted occasion.

After one deep breath, Nora stepped through the open doors and did the one thing she'd sworn she would never do—she walked down the aisle of a church in a wedding dress toward Soren, who waited for her at the altar.

He hadn't seen her for hours and this moment was Soren's first look at her in her wedding dress. It had been twenty years since she'd walked down an aisle toward Soren as a bridesmaid in a wedding he'd performed. Even now, halfway down the aisle, she could see the look in his eyes, a look that said the twenty years had been worth the wait.

As Nora took her place at Soren's right hand, she leaned in close and whispered, "Stop looking at me like that."

"Why?" he asked as the two hundred assembled guests rose to their feet when the groom made his entrance into the Great Hall that had been converted into a church for the wedding.

"You're on duty," she reminded him. "Father Stearns."

"Can I look at you like that after the wedding?"

She smiled at him as the two grooms joined hands in front of Soren.

"Today you can do anything you want."

"Watch out. I'll hold you to that promise," he said as the music faded into silence leaving her unable to retort. She swallowed her words, composed her face and tried not to cry when Soren began to speak.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man, Michael Luka Dimir, and this man, Griffin Randolfe Fiske, in holy matrimony. May your love be blessed by the sacrament of marriage and may we all who are gathered as witnesses rejoice together in the beauty of your commitment to each other as we would bask in the warmth of the sun…"

Nora made it three whole minutes into the ceremony before the tears started flowing. Luckily all eyes were on Michael and Griffin as they spoke their vows and made their promises. Once upon a time in a very different setting, Nora and Soren had made promises to each other and she wore those promises around her neck in the form of wedding bands engraved with two words—Forever and Everything. They weren't wedding vows but they had bound them together nonetheless. What was a sacrament but the outward sign of inner grace? If she and Soren loving each other and staying together despite all they'd been through, all they'd put each other through for twenty-three years, wasn't a miracle, she didn't know what was.

"Therefore," Soren said as the service drew to its conclusion, "now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder."

Soren spoke with authority and power, as if the words themselves could bind hearts together.

"I now pronounce you husband…and husband."

Griffin took Michael's face in his hands and kissed him.

And kissed him.

And kissed him.

A kiss of love and of lust and of complete and utter devotion, it went on so long the assembled witnesses started to titter, then giggle, then laugh. They kissed until Soren cleared his throat not once, but twice, louder the second time than the first. When even that didn't put a stop to their rather protracted display of public affection, Soren uttered a low "For heaven's sake, Griffin, people have places to be. Can't you save the consummation until later?"

Griffin paused long enough to look at Soren and answer, "Nope," before returning to the kiss with gusto.

Nora applauded him. Good man. Don't let anyone tell you to stop kissing for such a silly reason as two hundred people watching. What better place in the world was there to be than here, watching true lovers kiss? One didn't see such a thing every day. When witnessing a miracle, one should never hurry it along, for it'll be gone all too soon and who knows when one will see another miracle in one's lifetime?

Time stopped with that kiss. The image imprinted itself upon Nora's mind like a tintype photograph… She stood at Soren's right as Michael's mistress of honor—no one would have believed her a maid or a matron, so mistress it was—and Kingsley stood to the left of Soren as Griffin's best man. The wedding was held in the Great Hall of the thousand-year-old castle. The vibrant blue walls gleamed like polished azurite in the glow of a dozen brass-and-crystal chandeliers. Candles and flowers stationed on the ebony oak floors encircled the wedding party. Kingsley, Griffin and Soren all wore kilts. Griffin's and Kingsley's were red, white and green, the tartan of his mother's ancestors. Soren's kilt was black and blue, the traditional clergy tartan of Scotland and bruises. Upon request and because she couldn't tell Griffin no when he'd asked so nicely, she'd worn a Scottish wedding dress, tiered white silk and lace peeking out from under a corseted red-and-green tartan overlay. Michael had forgone the kilt—not his style, he said—and chosen a hip Rat Packera tuxedo with a black shirt and black jacket. A better-looking married couple she'd never seen in her life and not because they were so beautiful, although they were, but because their love was true and pure and hard-won. Every act of love was an act of courage, but for Michael and Griffin it was especially so. The world didn't often reward those who loved outside the lines. Nora had learned this lesson the hard way.

The kiss went on so long the guests rose to their feet and applauded.

Griffin turned to the masses and issued an order.

"Less applauding," he yelled at his guests. "More kissing!"

"No one has to tell me twice," Kingsley said, holding out his hand to Juliette, the mother of his daughter with another one on the way, and the most beautiful woman in attendance by far. Laughing, Juliette rose to her feet and put her hand in Kingsley's. He dipped her back and gave her an old Hollywood kiss.

"Shall we?" Soren asked.

"In front of two hundred people?"

"Why not?"

"Is that a rhetorical question or do you really want me to list all eight hundred reasons why not?"

Soren answered by taking her face in his hands and kissing her—a kiss like Communion, like wine on her tongue. She heard a few gasps of shock from the assembly followed by laughter and applause. Apparently this was the first time they'd seen a Catholic priest kissing a woman. It was a first for Nora as well, being kissed by Soren in front of so many people they didn't know. Yes, Kingsley had forced all the staff and the guests to sign non-disclosure agreements, but that was no guarantee word wouldn't leak that a certain well-respected Jesuit priest passionately kissed a fairly notorious dominatrix at a wedding in Scotland. And not just any wedding—a samesex wedding. Soren could be laicized for performing a samesex marriage. He'd get in less trouble if he were caught by the Pope himself sodomizing her in the Tomb of Saint Peter. Not that she'd ever had that fantasy—not very often anyway. Officiating the service had been Soren's gift to Michael, whom he loved like a son. When Nora had reminded him of the very real danger of excommunication if caught, Soren had replied, Michael asked me. It's my honor to do it. Since Soren was a man of honor that had been the end of it. But it wouldn't be the end of it.

Soren was a Jesuit priest who had kissed a woman in front of two hundred people and performed a same-sex wedding. A kiss plus a wedding plus what would happen tonight at nine o'clock added up to one very simple conclusion.

Soren's days as a priest were numbered.

Nora's Last Confession

NORA PULLED BACK FROM THE KISS AND SAW A DOZEN or more couples kissing, including Griffin and Michael, who were still kissing.

And. Still.

Kissing.

"Oh, for fuck's sake, Griffin," Nora said, reaching in front of Soren for Kingsley's hand. "You two make out as long as you want. The King and I are going to get a drink."

Nora gave Kingsley the end of the long plaid ribbon she'd tied around her bouquet. As they walked on either side of the happy couple—still kissing, of course—they lifted their hands and passed the sash over their heads like a wedding bower. Behind her she heard Soren speaking to the crowd of guests.

"I'd suggest everyone retreat to the banquet hall," he said in his most authoritarian clergy voice. "It seems the groom and groom might be a while."

Kingsley took her arm in his to escort her down the long aisle to the door.

"I heard we have you to thank for the wedding," Kingsley said, kissing the back of her hand.

Nora winced. "Michael had a little case of cold feet. I beat it out of him."

"Literally?"

"It took a solid hour of flogging followed by an hour of wax-play. Kid came so hard he almost passed out. Two-hour nap, and he was ready to get married. I love saving the day," she said. "I'm so good at it."

They waited in the foyer and soon they were joined by Michael's mother and sister, Griffin's parents and three brothers, and Soren. Juliette, wearing a red gown to match Kingsley's kilt, passed Céleste into his arms. And when Michael and Griffin finally emerged from the Great Hall it was to a hail of applause and a shower of rice. Céleste was the best rice thrower of them all, Kingsley assured his little girl. Michael's lips appeared swollen from so much passionate kissing and his pale cheeks were flushed, but Nora had to admit, she'd never seen him or Griffin ever look happier. Today was a beautiful day to be in love.

The guests who greeted the couple with hugs and kisses were a hodgepodge of friends and family, or as Kingsley called them, "the freaks and the straights." Mistress Irina, the first dominatrix Kingsley had trained for The 8th Circle, had sat next to Michael's aunt and uncle during the ceremony. Michael's sister Erin had borrowed a tissue from Alfred, Griffin's white-haired butler, who'd had to surreptitiously wipe his own eyes a time or two during the ceremony. Nora'd been a little surprised he'd come all the way to Scotland for Griffin's wedding. When she had asked him why he'd made the long trip from upstate New York, he'd answered, "He's a manchild and a deviant, and he has more money than sense, young lady. So of course I'm here for his wedding to his shamefully younger boy toy. It's the only sensible thing he's ever done in his life." Then he'd stalked off before Nora could hug him or worse, cry in his arms, which would have been an unforgivable affront to his dignity.

"Good ceremony, Father," she said, smiling up at Soren. "I loved the homily."

"Thank you. The Lord gives me good material to work with. I suppose He deserves most of the credit." Leave it to a Jesuit to be simultaneously pious and smug.

"Oops, picture time," she said. "I should go."

The photographer was already attempting to corral the wedding party back into the Great Hall. Soren started back into the hall with her.

"You can't be in the pictures," she reminded him.

"Michael expects me to be in at least one of the photographs for him and Griffin."

"Soren…this is not a good idea."

"Michael's like a son to me," he said. "When you have a child, you make sacrifices for them."

"All right. Pictures it is. In for a penny, in for a pounding, right?" She took his hand in hers. His fingers trembled, and she met his eyes with a question.

"I'm fine," he said before she had the chance to ask.

"It's fine if you aren't fine."

"I am fine."

"Your hand is shaking."

"This kilt is.…breezy."

"It's like a hundred feet of wool."

"This castle has an updraft. I'm not used to inclement weather in that region."

"It's your own fault for going regimental."

"Kingsley was. And when in Rome."

"How do you know Kingsley's going full Scotsman?" She narrowed her eyes at him. "Did you actually go running this morning or did you two play a game of hide the claymore?"

"I ran," he said. "Before."

"I knew it." She took both of his hands in hers now and interlocked their fingers.

Soren glanced at a grandfather clock and back at her. "Five thirty," he said. "Three and a half more hours."

"It'll go fast," she said, smiling a hopeful smile. "Won't it?"

"It will be the longest three and a half hours of my life." For Nora, too.

"They won't need me at the reception which isn't a reception. I can wait with you," she said.

"Thank you." He kissed her on the forehead. "What would I ever do without my Little One?"

Nora swallowed an unexpected lump in her throat.

"I promise, you won't ever have to find out."

Reluctantly she let go of Soren's hands as the photographer led her and Kingsley toward Michael and Griffin. The first pictures were of the groom and groom, best man and mistress of honor.

Kingsley held out his arm for her and she took it, grateful for his company in the secret they shared. "How is he?" Kingsley asked. "He is exactly how you think he is," she said. "Never so scared in his life?"

"White-knuckle petrified."

Kingsley kissed her cheek. "I know how he feels."

Pictures took half an hour. Kingsley promised to make her and Soren's excuses to anyone who asked where they were. Michael and Griffin could be told the truth, of course. They would understand. Michael had agreed to a big wedding with one stipulation—no official wedding reception. A party? Sure. Fine. Michael, young artist that he was, found manufactured moments like the ceremonial cake-cutting offensive. The reception was only for people to eat and drink and dance. Once the wedding was over, the wedding party was free to get up to whatever depraved shenanigans they wanted to. And as she and Kingsley were the wedding party, depraved shenanigans were a given.

Nora went looking for Soren and wasn't the least surprised to find him in the castle's small stone-and-wood chapel. She stepped inside and strode toward him.

The sun streamed through an octagonal window and cast eight-sided light onto Soren, turning his blond hair into gold in a moment of pure alchemy. In a breath, in an instant, she was fifteen years old again, and he twenty-nine, and he looked exactly like he did the first time she'd laid eyes on him. The sunlight melted the years between then and now. Her hand trembled so it was a miracle she didn't drop her glass of red wine.

Her footsteps on the stone floor alerted Soren to her presence. He lifted his head and turned back to her. The mask of composure had fallen, and she saw anguish in his eyes. She set her glass of wine on the altar and went to him, gathering him in her arms, holding him to her heart and resting her chin on the top of his head.

"How are you, my sir?"

"I don't know," he admitted, looking up at her. "There have been days in my life where I've woken up not knowing that later on that very day, my entire life would change. The day I met Kingsley, the day I met you. Usually you don't know the day or the hour. Today I do."

"Remember that story I wrote about Queen Esther when I was in high school?"

This is by far one of my favorite series of all time and I am so sad ...
By Book Lover
This is by far one of my favorite series of all time and I am so sad to see it end, but I think Reisz wrapped up this series perfectly. Throughout The White Years Reisz has taken us on a journey of the past, so that we can understand how our “nonnegotiables” became who they are.

We have watched Eleanor in all the facets and time periods in her life and The Queen focuses on her becoming a known as The Queen of The Eighth Circle, her time as a dominatrix. The story picks up with Nora returning to Kingsley after her time at the Convent. She is still not speaking to Søren, something both King and her have in common. King begins training her and brings in an expert: Søren.

Let me tell you my heart stopped when Nora saw Søren again. If you follow the series, it isn’t a spoiler to know they do not immediately rekindle. However, I absolutely loved seeing the love, sacrifice and devotion these two have for each other. It was never more evident than in The Queen.

Søren and Nora have never been your typical couple, but it works for them. When I was first introduced to them I was at a lost for just how unique this story line is and their connection, but now I can’t imagine a different world for them. Regardless, I love seeing these special moments were you just know their love is more, it’s not easy, it’s more than sexual, it’s real, unwavering love!

I think Reisz is one of the most talented writers and so freaking intelligent. I love the symbolism and how all her words have meaning and substance. So of course in perfect fashion, The Queen brings us all the way back to the beginning with Nora meeting Wes. When it was all over, I tiered up and then wanted to immediately jump right back into the beginning with The Siren.

If you have not read this series I cannot recommend it enough. Yes, it’s not your typical love story, so it’s not for everyone and I get that. However, if you love stories about real, unconditional love, with lots of sexiness and BDSM this is for you. This series is original, sexy, humorous and full of heart. I know I am probably over emotional, but even as I write this review I want to cry. I never want to say goodbye to Søren, Kingsley and Nora they are some of my favorite characters ever written!

A series end that exceeded my hopes and expectations!
By Robin Segnitz
Back in August of 2012, I bought a novel titled The Siren. Although I had never heard of author Tiffany Reisz, I was definitely intrigued by the book synopsis. What I remember most from reading The Siren is that I was stunned by the crisp writing, creativity and uniqueness of the plot. The Siren won an award that year: Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award (RT Award) for Best Erotic Romance of 2012 – I just knew The Siren was a 5-star novel, and I couldn’t wait for the next novel in the series!

Nora Sutherlin. Father Marcus Stearns. Kingsley Edge. For those of us who have followed along their journey, we’ve learned how this unlikely trio came to know each other. We’ve witnessed the unique love these characters share for one another. We know the disagreements that have driven them apart, seen them deal with family and questionable relationships. Beginning with The Siren, the overall arc of The Original Sinners series spans across a series of eight novels which is split into two quartets: the Red Years and the White Years. Tiffany Reisz brings her characters full circle as she concludes her series with The Queen, where Nora makes one final confession to her Priest – Soren.

With Nora’s final confession, The Queen transitions from a castle in Scotland to the past, where Eleanor finds herself at the front door of Kingsley’s townhouse. She is homeless and jobless, without a penny to her name, and still bitterly angry with Soren. She’s not even certain if Kingsley will take her in, but instead, he surprises Elle with a job offer. He wants Elle to be the next great Dominatrix of the Eighth Circle. Kingsley convinces Elle to take up the whip, the flogger, embrace her dominant side and make loads of money. He dubs her Mistress Nora Sutherlin and issues a challenge: become the Red Queen of the Underground.

Nora embraces Kingsley’s challenge, continues to move forward in her writing career, and through it all, her feelings for Soren continue to swirl with confusion. Underneath all of the bitterness and anger, she still feels undying love for her Priest. While part of The Queen is about Nora’s transition to a career as a Dominatrix, the other half of the story is about Eleanor and Soren. The Queen really does come down to a set of vows made by Soren and Eleanor when she was just fifteen-years-old: if Eleanor would promise him forever, Soren would promise her everything. And Soren has no intention of breaking his vow.

I have faithfully followed The Original Sinners series to its conclusion. When you find a great new series to read, you embrace it, count down the days until each book releases and hope it remains strong to the end. You dream of a conclusion that exceeds your expectations. Well….Tiffany Reisz did not disappoint. The Queen included a cast of all of my favorite characters from across the series. The suspense held me glued to the pages as I pushed toward the climax. I can tell everyone with absolute certainty that I could not have dreamed of a more perfect ending for Soren, Nora and Kingsley and the rest of The Original Sinners! Congratulations to author Tiffany Reisz – The Queen is a 5-star novel and has earned a place on my list of 2015 favorites!

Hail all to the Queen
By Brenda Reynolds
As usual I downloaded (through pre-sale the moment it became available) Tiffany's new book at the stroke of midnight EST the day of release and began reading. For last six books I have planned for the release, with the usual anticipation and finishing all other reading so that I can focus solely on the new release. Today was no exception. I'm a bit stalkerish with her work as I've read everything I could get my hands on that Tiffany Reisz (pronounced Rice) has written. Her fans have waited with desire and trepidation for the last installment of the White years. We desire this because it is more of our beloved story of Nora, Soren and King. We do not want this release because she has stated it was the last. Tiffany has captivated her audience with her innate ability to tell a story. Her written communication to her followers put us on our knees with anticipation and gratitude, Mistress of our Literary kink. We have fallen in love with every character, made them a part of my family and this, the last book...is as though our family is going their separate ways. This is a love story, from beginning to end, of two people that have brought in the unlovable and loved them, made them whole again. Bring the tissues, a box of them, because this is a sad and very happy ending. Tiffany has also stated she would give us short stories every once in a while so that we aren't going cold turkey. "The Queen" has thrown her flogger around my heart making the "Original Sinners" series one of my all time favorites. I will go back and re-read every issue including the stories exclusive to her website. If I could give this book, this series, ten stars I would because it has truly earned every single one.
