GREAT!

I just recently purchased this book and it was one that was difficult to put down. While there were a few bits that I didn't find too terribly funny, the vast majority of them were very funny. Some of his bits were even laugh out loud hysterical. This book is grouped up into what the different stand-up routines are about, which I liked because it was well organized and jokes weren't just thrown around randomly. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who's a fan of the comedian and the character Jerry Seinfeld.

Easy reading, but probably for fans only

I received this book in hard cover format as a gift, being a fan of the show and stand up performances, and enjoyed it tremendously. That having been said, it is a not much more than a light reading experience, and at under 200 pages (mostly lightly filled) is little more than a mirror of his most well known material. Fans like myself will not be disappointed, but this is not an insightful expose of what makes Jerry tick, and moreover is really just selling ice to eskimos. Good fun, but don't expect too much

This book is simply groundbreaking. As a person who likes scholarly material and as a person who likes accessible material, this book is simply like no other. Mr. Wallis's erudition, accuracy, and detail to the latest and most compelling research is matched by his completely approachable and accessibility to very precise and ancient technology that we call the "Tantra". Tantra Illuminated, breaks down misconceptions and stereotypes, and offers the reader the most compelling approaches to understanding this very broad and very mis-understood tradition. Anyone, whether a casual Yoga teacher, to a serious undergrad or grad student in religious studies, or a practitioner in any form of Tantra, NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. For the serious academic, Chris Wallis uses primary Sanskrit sources, never before seen translations, and precise teachings from his own prodigious education with some of the world's finest scholars in this area (namely Alexis Sanderson, Paul Muller Ortega, and Douglas Brooks). However, he also appeals to the everyday casual student with his courage to use down to Earth language at times, and personal gleamings from his own practice (like practicing directly with Guru Mayi or studying at Oxford University). This book, and the others I'm sure he will put out soon, will be the standard upon which Tantric Studies will rely on.

The Must-Have Yoga Philosophy Text

If you're serious about understanding yoga philosophy, Tantra Illuminated is the new essential text. I've read many works about Tantra by modern scholars; most suffer from either excess academic-ese or simply bore the reader to sleep. Wallis' work is the Tantrik manual I've always dreamed of: easy to read but detailed, replete not just with philosophy but with why this ancient tradition matters to us as yoga practitioners in the modern world. His real-life examples and conversational tone make accessible the beautifully profound teachings he shares with the reader. I savored this book page by page, like a bar of delicious chocolate. And best of all, I expect to enjoy it over and over again.

Wow, what a book!

The great American zen master Philip Kapleau once said that the very best books are those that make you want to practice. This is definitely such a book. It is a profoundly well-written book, an impressive book, that is fun and exciting to read. Not only that, this book clearly transmits shaktipat to anyone with a heart that resonates with what it is saying.

I have been a yogi for about 50 years now and have had the incredible good fortune to spend time with the Siddha Guru Baba Muktananda and train with him at his New York ashram, so I am somewhat familiar with what this author calls Nondual Shaiva Tantra (NST). But I am not a scholar, pundit or intellectual. None-the-less, reading this book is a profound spiritual experience along with an in-depth education in the most life positive spiritual system known to humankind. Although it can take you to incredible intellectual and philosophical heights, the real treasure is that NST provides you with the means to realize its truth for yourself. It is a yoga. It is not something you have to believe or accept. It is something you can actually realize for yourself as it is the truth of your being.

This book has several different levels, as the title claims, in that it provides the philosophy, history and practice of a timeless tradition. The author is well aware that the reader may not be interested in every aspect, so he always lets you know where the book is going in case you want to skim through a section that may not be too relevant to your interests. The author is in a conversation with the reader and that may be another reason such a powerful transmission is possible. There is the palpable presence of Consciousness in this book.

I haven't enjoyed a book this much in a long, long time.

I want to thank Bonnie for getting me this wonderful book for Christmas, Christopher Tompkins for turning me onto it through his tele-class, Abhinava Gupta's 15 Verses on Awakening, and Christopher Wallis for writing such a beautiful book.

This book is a must for any student, entrepeneur or manager to use as a guide in how to continiously maintain the gradual improvements of the organization and production techniques in a modern market economy. OUTSTANDING BOOK!

I have been an Edgar Payne enthusiast ever since art school and that was decades ago. This book defines what so many feel and think of his works. And for the purchase price, not only do you get a great biography of the man but also full color and full page illustrations. I own an Edgar Payne drawing and if I had the money available I'd also have an original Edgar Payne painting hanging in my home. This book is well worth the money and to me Payne defines what Southern California landscape painting is and should be!
Enough with this modernist attitude of art for art's sake and I agree with Payne on that subject wholeheartedly! BUY THE BOOK!

Thiss book is a must for fans of Edgar Payne. One of the few museum catalogs where the color and values are remarkably true to the art, the scholarship, and the printing quality throughout, are a joy. Of course, the best is to catch the show in one of its museum venues, but, this wonderful book will sustain long after the paintings have returned to their (lucky) respective owners.

Covers a variety of viewpoints

One of the things I found particularly interesting (and enjoyable) about reading this book was how it mirrored discussions held with fan communities about what they do. Along with a helpful bibliography on fan studies, and more than one review of fan fiction history (its origins as well as academic study on the topic) there are various, sometimes contradictory, perspectives on the writing of fan fiction. These discuss the various forms it can take, and what models the writing fits into. Also very interesting is the history of machinima, one of fandom's latest art forms. A bit academic for the layman but still a useful introduction to those not familiar with fan fiction studies.

This is an essential book for anyone interested in contemporary fan communities and their creative products: fanfic (including slash fiction), fanvids, online RPGs, and much more. The writers are all both active fans and credentialed academics, and the book as a whole maintains academic rigour while remaining clear and comprehensible to readers who don't know the jargon.

For members of fan communities, the language and activities described will be familiar. For those who are new to this subculture, Busse and Hellekson's introduction gives a succinct and readable account of the intellectual genealogy of fan studies while outlining the state of internet communities at the time of writing (admirably avoiding the common danger for books about the internet, the making of grand claims for a landscape that will be out of date by the time the description is in print, by emphasising the history and time-sensitivity of the world they describe), and Coppa provides a history of science fiction and media fan communities as they developed into the cultures which all the essayists examine and explore.

Each of the essays presents a snapshot of fannish life, considering the communities which form around fan fiction writing, video making and other activities through fresh and interesting theoretical lenses. I was particularly intrigued by Coppa's reading of fanfiction as performance, Busse's and Lackner, Lucas and Reid's examination of writers' and readers' interactions as potentially and sometimes problematically queer acts, and Willis's depiction of slash fiction as making space for queer subjects in normatively straight textual worlds, but others will find different selections from this smorgasbord of literary and cultural analysis to be most appealing.

An excellent and enlightening read

I am not an academic, but I found this book very readable. Beyond that, it was inspiring to read such a diversity of thought about the fannish culture to which I belong. Unlike the few other books I've read about media fandom, I wasn't just nodding my head and thinking "Yes, I know this already." Several of the essays introduced new ideas, new ways of thinking about fans and how we interact with one another and with our texts, that were not just novel to me but well-argued and fascinating.

My particular favorite was the essay that suggested a view of canon, fanon, and fan-created texts as part of an "archive" of a particular show, movie, or book, erasing the boundary between canon and fannish creations in a way that is, IMO, nothing short of revolutionary.

I would enthusiastically recommend this book to any fan interested in meta, and any scholar interested in media fandom.

About the Author
Frank H. Netter was born in New York City in 1906. He studied art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design before entering medical school at New York University, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1931. During his student years, Dr. Netter’s notebook sketches attracted the attention of the medical faculty and other physicians, allowing him to augment his income by illustrating articles and textbooks. He continued illustrating as a sideline after establishing a surgical practice in 1933, but he ultimately opted to give up his practice in favor of a full-time commitment to art. After service in the United States Army during World War II, Dr. Netter began his long collaboration with the CIBA Pharmaceutical Company (now Novartis Pharmaceuticals). This 45-year partnership resulted in the production of the extraordinary collection of medical art so familiar to physicians and other medical professionals worldwide.
Icon Learning Systems acquired the Netter Collection in July 2000 and continued to update Dr. Netter’s original paintings and to add newly commissioned paintings by artists trained in the style of Dr. Netter. In 2005, Elsevier Inc. purchased the Netter Collection and all publications from Icon Learning Systems. There are now over 50 publications featuring the art of Dr. Netter available through Elsevier Inc.
Dr. Netter’s works are among the finest examples of the use of illustration in the teaching of medical concepts. The 13-book Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations, which includes the greater part of the more than 20,000 paintings created by Dr. Netter, became and remains one of the most famous medical works ever published. The Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy, first published in 1989, presents the anatomic paintings from the Netter Collection. Now translated into 16 languages, it is the anatomy atlas of choice among medical and health professions students the world over.
The Netter illustrations are appreciated not only for their aesthetic qualities, but, more importantly, for their intellectual content. As Dr. Netter wrote in 1949 “clarification of a subject is the aim and goal of illustration. No matter how beautifully painted, how delicately and subtly rendered a subject may be, it is of little value as a medical illustration if it does not serve to make clear some medical point.” Dr. Netter’s planning, conception, point of view, and approach are what inform his paintings and what make them so intellectually valuable.
Frank H. Netter, MD, physician and artist, died in 1991.

The finest medical anatomy atlas available.

Frank Netter's atlas compiles his paintings of every imaginable human body part, seen in various degrees of dissection, into one volume. Dr. Netter's talent for reproducing the facts of anatomy is exquisite and unquestionable. However, as one looks a little deeper, it becomes clear that Netter is in fact a guru of function as well. Nerves, outlined in an unearthly yellow, terminate on muscles they actually innervate. Tendinous insertions are always on the correct part of bony protuberances, and fiber direction is always carefully detailed. Any unusual functional variances, such as the dual sympathetic/parasympathetic function of Vidian's nerve, or such as the pulley effect on the trochlear nerve, are always painstakingly pointed out. Netter also excels in variation, presenting, for example, 11 normal variants of the cystic and hepatic ducts.
The alternatives are few and inadequate. Pernkopf is often cited as Netter's chief rival; his experimentation on living persons incarcerated in Nazi concentration camps forbids me from perusing his text, on ethical grounds. Grant's atlas is laughably inadequate by comparison, both in number and quality of the plates. And Gray's, the old standby, simply cannot measure up; Netter's bold colors and functional depictions are clearly superior.
Rohen and Yokochi, a photographic atlas, offers the advantage of being photographs of superb dissections, and therefore more like what one encounters in the anatomy lab. Some find it useful as a supplement to Netter's atlas. I also used Moore's textbook of anatomy; the plates, from Grant's atlas, are not so good, but the text can be used to expand and illuminate on the relevant plates in Netter's, and the text is well written and clear. I found it indispensible to read a little bit about what I was looking at, the night before an anatomy lab.
I have also lent my Netter to several artists (sculptors and painters,) all of whom found it to be quite useful.

Netter's is the best "anatomy atlas" I've seen around

Honestly, I don't know what I would have done without Netter's. From the time that I bought it, anatomy became a much easier task for me. The reason mostly has to do with the way the figures are drawn. They are so clear (and lifelike) that a lot of times you don't even have to refer to any anatomy text to understand structural relationships. Each figure also usually labels most of the structures that are shown.

I'm not saying that all the figures are excellent. Probably 5-10 % of figures could be improved. But the rest are very good.

I should also say that this book is only an "atlas" and does not have any accompanied text; the index for structures is done in a weird way so usually it's hard to find the structure you're looking for; the book binding is very poor; and the coverage of X-ray, CT, and MRI is poor. There are also some occasional mislabeling errors.

But overall, it is the best anatomy atlas that I have seen, and because of Netter's work, I gave it 4 stars. However, considering all aspects of the book, I'll give it the following rating:

I have been a forensic pathologist for more than twenty years and refer to texts and atlases of anatomy on an almost daily basis. This is, by far, the best atlas I have ever used. Dr. Netter's genius lies in his being able to render complex anatomy in lucid and easily grasped pictures that still look like the real thing. He makes it appear effortless and his real brilliance can only be grasped by comparing his atlas to other (and usually more expensive) works that just do not measure up. I wish I had this atlas in medical school, but am delighted in being able to refer to it now. It is one of those pearls that every first year medical student, nursing student and paramedic simply must have in their personal library. It will prove indispensable in every stage of their careers.

Jonathan Crichton has over fifteen years' experience in teaching and research in English language education and has published widely in related areas. He holds a PhD in Linguistics and an MA in Applied Linguistics.

A tough language like English can be made easy!

This book is EXCELLENT for a 2nd level ESL students practicing English. I tutor English to a couple of immigrants, and I have seen a fair share of good and bad books for teaching English. The "English Made Easy" books definitely belong in the "good" pile! At the beginning of every chapter of this book, they introduce a couple of vocabulary words in lists. Then they proceed to introduce some words using illustrations. They also show realistic conversations through very simple comic strips. In some of the chapters, there are exercises so English learners can fill in the blanks to finish the conversations in the comic strips. There are also a couple of other exercises in the book that allows ESL students to identify vocabulary words and use correct grammar. And occasionally, the scenarios are funny, so those with a good sense of humor will certainly appreciate this book.

It's preferable for students to go through the chapters of this book in sequential order. However, some students may be able to jump around the chapters and still be able to learn English fine. Either way, this is a valuable resource to students. Depending on how many ESL students are studying together, you can have them act out the conversations, write stories about the situations, and even add more to the stories.

This book by Jonathan Crichton was easy to use and was very user friendly by both the teacher and student. One complaint was there were over a dozen references to people, places and things that were entirely British and substitution had be made for the student who is living in America. Otherwise the book was very useful.
