Cannot believe I paid $10 for this!

Writing down things that you hear and call it a book? Maybe I can do the same. I hear people talking. In the trees there are birds chirping. A car just drove passed my house. There is no substance to this book. Unfortunately his deconstruction leaves much to be desired and is elementary at best. Glad I didn't start with his more expensive books.

Useful Information with a Well Done Layout

I am about to graduate from Northeastern and this was the book for one of my final elective courses, Consumer Behavior. I run several websites so it is absolutely critical to me to understand how web visitors think about content, make selections, and build affinities with brands. The book provided wonderful information in all areas.

The book is full color and provides a wealth of examples of ads, labels, and other material so you can understand what is being presented. You can see visually how some styles of promotions draw users in, while others repel the users to convince them to stop doing something (for example, using drugs). The book uses real life stories mixed in with theoretical explanations to help you explain the concepts.

There is a good mix of cross-cultural information, to help readers understand how marketing to an American audience differs from marketing to the Chinese, for example. It also delves thoroughly into sub cultures, from African Americans to tweens to Harley riders. It discusses the challenges of narrowing down social class in our mobile society. It discusses how buyers have ongoing "wars" in their heads between the rational decision making process and the emotion-driven pleasure center.

I enjoyed the book immensely and found much of its material immediately valuable for my daily work. I imagine most people who read this will find it helpful, if not for what they do for a living, then in how they themselves are being marketed to and are making decisions.

I have a minor "factual" issue I'd like to point out. On page 535 the author perpetuates the myth that we don't throw rice at weddings now because it makes birds' stomachs' explode. This absolutely is NOT TRUE. Birds eat rice naturally and their bodies deal with it fine, even when it's not cooked. There were no rice cookers in nature :). The reason churches asked people to stop throwing rice is that it's a royal pain to clean up.

So, that point aside, I do recommend the book.

I purchased this book with my own funds to take my class.

I bought this book as used and it came almost brand new. I love the insights that this book gives me and the pearson videos that link to it. I have learned so much from just reading this book and I have successfully started my own blog. I would recommend this for a teacher or any inquisitive person!

Not the book, but the customer service

This is a solid textbook. Explains most of what you really need to know about consumer behavior. But I didn't this review because of the book, but because I got the book from a_teambooks. These guys have the best customer service I've had online. They solved my problem in a pinch. If you ever do have to buy textbooks, buy it from a_teambooks!!!

High-Quality Photo History of Aviation!

Walt Boyne's name attached to an aviation book is a sure bet that item is a winner. Simply put, Boyne is one of our finest aviation historians. In CHRONICLE OF FLIGHT, Boyne and Publications International combine talents to produce this marvelous, high-quality photo history of flight. There have been similar books put out over the years; Boyne's deserves to go to the top of the heap. It's magnificent!

CHRONICLE OF FLIGHT divides the history of aviation into eras: Ancient Times to 1913; 1914 to 1923; 1924 to 1933; 1934 to 1943; and so on. Each section's subtitle reveals the thrust of that chapter. The Ancient Times to 1913 section, for example, is subtitled: From Dreams to Reality; 1914 to 1923: Tempered in the Fire of War; 1924 to 1933: The Heart of the Golden Age of Flight; etc. Each chapter includes "Flight Timelines" that point out important developments.

Boyne prefaces each chapter with a two-four page summary that sets the stage for the images to come. Chapters range in length from 30 to 70 pages in length and features dozens of crisply-reproduced, well-captioned b&w and/or color photos of hundreds of aircraft, airships, helicopters, designers, pilots, military commanders and aeronautical events from Icarus to early 2003.

Publications International deserve a big thumb's up for the wonderful job they did in reproducing the thousands of photgraphs that are included in this book. And Boyne does his usual excellent job of describing who, what, when, where and why.

CHRONICLE OF FLIGHT is an absolutely first-class photo history of aviation. And, with a price tag of $25.00, it's a steal. You just don't see quality like this at that price. Buy this book; you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.

High Quality Pictures, but.....

Great pictures, but, there are more than a few incorrect captions. It's really noticeable and reflects on some poor editing....makes the book seem rushed and thrown together when you can't even match up a caption to an aircraft.

THE INVISIBLES: Slavery Inside The White House and How It Helped Shape America is the first book to tell the story of the executive mansion’s most unexpected residents, the African American slaves who lived with the U.S. presidents who owned them. Ten of the first 12 United States presidents were slave masters. In this brisk history, Holland (Black Men Built the Capitol: Discovering African American History In and Around Washington, D.C., 2007), Washington correspondent for the Associated Press, examines the tangled relationships between slaves and the presidents they served, from George Washington to Ulysses S. Grant, and exposes the convoluted laws enacted to impede slaves’ quests for freedom. Of the first 12 presidents, only John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams, fierce opponents of slavery, did not own slaves, thereby incurring heavy costs for domestic help to maintain the White House. Although some slaves’ lives have been lost to history, Holland creates a vivid portrait of many, including William Lee, who worked as Washington’s 'body servant,' and Oney Judge, born at Mount Vernon, who was Martha Washington’s favorite. They were among some 150 slaves that Washington amassed by the time of the Revolution, many bought by his wife. Martha cherished Oney, and she was devastated when the woman fled from servitude. Tracked down, Oney was told that the Washingtons would free her when she returned to them—but she didn’t believe the offer. 'I am free now and choose to remain so,' she replied.' Holland reprises Jefferson’s connection to the Hemings family, whose descendants claimed that he fathered Sally Hemings’ children, and he reveals that even presidents who spoke against slavery kept slaves to run their farms and work on their land. James Madison, convinced that slaves should not be freed into white America, founded the American Colonization Society, 'dedicated to freeing slaves and transporting them to the west coast of Africa.' James Monroe, Henry Clay, and Andrew Jackson also endorsed that idea. Several thousand freed slaves were sent to Liberia from 1820 to 1840; in honor of Monroe, the capital was renamed Monrovia. (Globe Pequot, 2007) and a longtime Washington correspondent for The Associated Press, the world’s largest news organization. Since moving to Washington, D.C. in 2000, Holland has covered the White House, the Congress, and the Supreme Court for The AP. A regular guest on CNN, NBC, Fox News, PBS, C-SPAN's Washington Journal and ABC's News Now, Holland speaks frequently on African American and Washington political topics. Holland is a member of the National Press Club, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Capital Press Club, the Washington Association of Black Journalists, and the Society of Professional Journalists. Holland is a sought after-speaker on African American history and politics, having lectured at universities and institutions like Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City. Disjointed Book but Interesting Backstories

Wanted to really love this book. However it was just so disjointed. Many interesting snippets of American History as it related to U.S. Presidents and their slave holdings. Mr. Holland should have followed a linear path, from Washington onward, or he could have done it by theme, or by relating the stories of each slave. I believe that many paragraphs were cut and pasted and reread as I went along. As it was, it was a jumble. Seemed like a term paper; each chapter depended upon his research. Such a large chapter was devoted to Andrew Jackson and his horses! Must give the author credit as he stated that this story is still incomplete; guess he will keep researching and writing. Did love the insights of some parts of this book, but the editor should have shown reined in Mr. Holland for more organization.

The 4 ranking is not due to the author's skills but to the limits of information he had to share. As he notes more facts may be available in the future. I hope so since the subject of slavery in the formation of our nation is riveting.
