5 stars +! Must have if you're in Performance Management as IT or Management Consultant

I'm PMP (Project Management Professional), active in Performance Management for the last 6 years. My IT knowledge is about the average, I'm very confident in design sophisticated Excel files to sort and analyze Performance data. This is a type of book I was looking for a while! Help me to understand the IT side of managing Performance Management data. It is not an IT book, this means even non IT educated readers, like myself, can highly benefit of it.

I strongly reccomend this book to a variety of professionals for different reasons:
* to not so experienced Managers and Project Managers: it gives a great overview of how is possible to integrate IT in business/projects in order to take fully advantage of using accurate data, benefit actionable information, be results oriented. Also it shows how is possible to succesfully manage design and implement a Performance Dashboard project, and use it to empower people, stay on target, understand the big picture. This is an excellent start to understand how to deal with IT projects, and how to smartly use IT in taking right time decisions.
* to experienced Managers and Project Managers: a superb view of how to communicate better with IT, speak same language and design results oriented applications. The author presents very well how is possible try to balance and to compromise (and hopefully succeed!) the IT need of planning, and clear specifications, and management desire to have the final product in place over the night. Strongly hope the managers will better understand this process and they will learn it is worth while spend some more time with planning and testing, instead of waisting 10 times more later, in desperate attempts to catch up with changes, running around the clock and making last time improvements.
* for IT professionals: it might be a back on earth lesson. In a lot of companies IT is a tool to reach business objectives and not the ultimate goal. The people wich are not so IT skilled might be good some other places, and is nice they are like this. If IT experts will spend some more time with them, they finally might understand how can use IT applications in their advantage.

I will keep it as a future refference when I'll be in the position to design performance measurement databases, customize reports, plan data analyzis, join teams with IT experts. Thank you Wayne, this really helped me!

Quo vadis?

For purposes of discussion, pretend that your organization is a vehicle within which you and your associates travel en route to a series of destinations; for example, various stages of progressively improved operational efficiency and progressively increased profitability. One key question arises: How well is your vehicle performing?

The three "dashboards" (i.e. operational, tactical, and strategic) that Wayne Eckerson offers in this volume can help to answer that question. "The monitoring application conveys critical information at a glance using timely and relevant data, usually with graphical elements; the analysis application lets users analyze and explore performance data across multiple dimensions and at different levels of detail to get at the root cause of problems and issues; the management application fosters communication among executives, managers, and staff and gives executives continuous feedback across a range of critical activities, enabling them to `steer' their organizations in the right direction."

The ultimate success of the cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective system which Eckerson discusses in this book depends on several factors: sufficient leadership and resources at all levels of implementation, correct and consistent application of the right metrics, a compelling graphical user interface, and contingency planning which ensures user adoption while driving the organizational changes.

I especially appreciate Eckerson's provision of three mini case studies that illustrate how -- in real-world situations - the three performance "dashboards" can achieve the desired objectives. Specifically, those that are operational (Quicken Loans, Inc., pages 127-141), those which are tactical (International Truck and Engine Corp., pages 143-158), and those which are strategic (Hewlett Packard Co., pages 159-177). I also appreciate the material provided in Part Three (Critical Success Factors: Tips from the Trenches) as Eckerson correlates various multilayered applications built on business intelligence and data integration infrastructure that enables any organization (regardless of size or nature) to measure, monitor, and manage business performance more effectively.

All executives recognize the importance of accurate and consistent measurement of what really matters. Obviously, the "what" varies (sometimes significantly) from one organization to another. In my opinion, the three performance "dashboards" that Eckerson recommends can be of substantial benefit, whatever the given "what" may be but if - and only if - the aforementioned success factors are present. To repeat, they are: sufficient leadership and resources at all levels of implementation, correct and consistent application of the right metrics, a compelling graphical user interface, and contingency planning which ensures user adoption while driving the organizational changes.

This book is by no means an "easy read" but it will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate care. Then what? He fully understands how difficult it is to ensure adoption by others, and, to manage performance effectively throughout the given enterprise. In the final chapter, Eckerson notes that performance dashboards can easily backfire and cause performance to decline or stall instead of climb. He then identifies what he characterizes as eight cardinal sins " that can turn a performance dashboard into a performance quagmire." How to avoid them? Eckerson offers nine strategies to ensure adoption and eight strategies to manage performance.

I highly recommend this brilliant book as well as Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement. Both are eminently worthy of thoughtful and rigorous consideration. However, that said, I also offer a caveat expressed by Peter Drucker in 1963: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Invoking again the "vehicle" metaphor introduced in the first paragraph of this brief commentary, I presume to suggest that if you and your companions don't know where you are going, "any road will get you there."

How to use information to energize your goals and strategy.

Modern corporations collect vast amounts of data. Unfortunately, they too often mistake having massive amounts of data for having useful and actionable information. They are not the same thing. Even when a company knows how to transform data into usable information, there are still steps left to take that that information and make it accessible and usable throughout the organization in a manageable and coordinated way.

Wayne Eckerson explains how to use performance dashboards to display information on screens that help people do their job, understand where they are against the company's strategic objectives and goals, and give them the ability to drill down into the data as required by their job. These screens should be designed to be simple to read and understand (he says they should be designed with for a 12 year old), but empowering for their users.

There are three broad types of performance dashboards: Operational, Tactical, and Strategic. These must be handled differently, and I think the author does a great job in explaining how you should implement these. Each type gets a case study of a company that shows the reasons and methods for the implementation.

This book is for more for technical types, but it should also be looked at by the business types involved with driving and supporting such an initiative. I also appreciated Eckerson's emphasis on the a thaw between the usual tensions between the IT and Business teams.

A helpful and useful book.

About the Author

He worked with several government and ministers and was the head of the largest social science research unit in the UK.

A 'must have ' Presentation Skills book

‘Presentation genius’ is a book that everyone who makes presentations will want to get their hands on. You choose; read the book cover to cover or dip in and out of it at will. How ever you use the book it will make you a more effective presenter.
The beauty of this book, and what makes it stand head and shoulders above the other books on presentation, is that it is based on scientific research. But it’s not dry and dusty; far from it, the style is engaging, witty, amusing and above all informative. There’s a lot to learn here which can make all of our presentations better. The ‘key takeaways’ section at the end of each chapter is particularly useful.
As a trainer of many years who has given countless presentations, I found it both reassuring and fascinating to find that there is theory behind what I do either by instinct or having learnt though experience. I certainly picked up new tips and enjoyed the ride!

Excellent Resource!

Chess is a game that I have loved for a long time. As a child, I used to play against my dad and my brother. I joined the chess club at my middle school, and later joined the chess club and eventually chess team of my high school. On the chess team, I played in local school tournaments, city tournaments, the state tournament and even the national chess tournament one year. Our team placed 2nd in our division at the state tournament, but we were close to last in our division at nationals. It was all fun, and a great learning experience. I loved playing competitively, and I missed it when high school was over.

After high school, I didn't play chess much anymore. I got married, started having kids, and was overall too distracted for chess. It wasn't on my priority list, and it was barely on my radar, but when my oldest daughter was turning four, suddenly it seemed important again. I really wanted to teach both of my children chess. Early education is important to me. My daughter was already learning piano, math, and reading, and I realized that she was definitely old enough and ready to start learning the basics of chess.

Despite not having any books on the subject, I started teaching Acacia and her younger sister Jasmine about chess, to the best of my ability. Teaching the names of the pieces to them was easy, but beyond that, it quickly became rather difficult. I remembered learning about/hearing about 3 year olds who could play chess, and I thought there had to be more information out there on teaching such a complicated game to a preschooler. That was when my Amazon searching began.

I searched on Amazon for books on teaching chess, and clicked on nearly every link that popped up. Book after book after book was for teaching children ages 8 and up, or 9 and up, 12 and up, or (rarely) 6/7 and up. None were on teaching 2 and up, 3 and up, or 4 and up, until finally I came across Chess is Child's Play, for teaching ages 2 and up. After reading on it for a few minutes, I discovered that the book had not even been released yet. At that point, being a book-reviewer, I looked up the publisher's web address to request a review copy. I actually didn't find the contact information I needed from the publisher's website, so I contacted one of the authors, Laura Sherman, and she was kind enough to request the review copy for me (and also to do an author interview with me!).

In the meantime, I continued struggling along with trying to teach my daughter chess on my own.

When the book arrived, I was immediately impressed with the physical quality. This is a hard-cover book, well-made, with great paper quality, and the diagrams/pictures are large and easy to see. The book has a friendly feel to it.

When I started reading, I noticed early on that a lot of the ideas and methods I'd been using with my daughter already were actually included in this book. It felt good to know I was on the right track. At the same time, the book also pointed out many of the exact same mistakes I had made in teaching! It was almost as if the authors had been watching me, and then documented my "common mistakes" such as trying to teach the pawn too soon, and teaching other concepts out of order. It is easy to see that the authors really know what they are talking about in this book and that they truly have experience teaching chess to young children. The order of things in this book is logical, and makes a lot more sense than what I had come up with on my own.

This book is not specifically for preschool age children, but is actually written for children of any age. It will help you teach your child chess whether you are experienced or have never played the game before yourself. The lessons are simple enough for young children, but captivating enough to keep the attention of older children, and parents as well.

The first three chapters are Why Chess?, What You Should Expect from the Lessons, and Tips on Teaching. These three chapters formed an excellent introduction to the game. The next chapter is Special Exercises for Two to Four-Year-Olds.

After that, each chess piece is learned individually, and has its own chapter. The pieces are taught in a specific order, which makes them easier to learn. In between some of the chapters on the chess pieces, there is a chapter on taking the other players' pieces, and one on how to attack and defend pieces. These concepts are revisited again later in the book. After learning how to move the King, but before learning to move the Knight and Pawn, there is a chapter on Check and a chapter on Checkmate. The order of the pieces and concepts made a lot of sense, and the authors make a note now and then to remind parents not to bring up certain ideas or concepts yet. The instructions in this book are very clear, and easy to follow.

After learning all the pieces and the basics of attacking, defending, check and checkmate, the authors included a chapter on the difference between legal and illegal moves. Then there is a chapter on how to set up the chess board, and a chapter on playing that first real game.

All the basics have been covered at this point, and now the book includes some of the more complicated concepts to learn and teach. Castling comes next after playing your first game with the chess board set up properly, and then there are tips for opening strategies. The value of the pieces is covered, with tips for teaching this to older children and tips for teaching it to younger children. There is a whole chapter written on how your own pieces can get in your way, and then more on attacking and defending, going a little more in depth on these topics. Getting out of check has its own chapter, and of course more tips on spotting and forming checkmate is covered, and a chapter about stalemates and draws.

One thing I love about this book is that it is full of mini-games to play with your child. Especially for a younger child, the process of learning to play a full game can take several months. In the meantime, simply teaching lessons would get boring rather quickly, and I would imagine many children would lose interest. The mini-games in this book solve that dilemma by creating interactive games you can play every step of the way. Again, with the mini-games, some were exactly what I had been using, or planning to use, to teach my daughter, and some showed me that other ideas of mine would have possibly been the opposite of helpful. The authors' insight and experience showed well with these mini-games, and really the entire book.

I received this book as an experienced chess player. I already knew how to play chess, but this book helped me learn to better teach it. Chess is Child's Play filled in a lot of gaps in my teaching. Sometimes when you are really good at something, you'll overlook the smaller details that beginners need to pay attention to. This book really helped point out to me some of the concepts that are difficult for beginners, but which I take for granted and would generally consider obvious. It has helped me learn to slow down a little bit more and have more patience, and take my time, with teaching chess. This book will help you go at your child's pace, and help you to understand what your child's pace is. The authors have tips on understanding whether your child comprehends what you are teaching, and there are Troubleshooting Tips at the end of each chapter, with brief questions and answers about concepts your child may be struggling with, or getting bored with.

Father Geek's "Chess is Child's Play" Book Review

Chess is Child's Play: Teaching Techniques that Work is one of the better books about Chess I have come across that focuses on children. The For Dummies series of books tend to do much of what is being provided in this book, but this title handles the reader with a much kinder and gentler glove. This is important to note because the entire reason for the book's existence is to help teach a very complicated game to young developing minds. Learning anything new can be challenging and stressful, which Chess is by design. This book tempers the game's complexity with simplicity. I am reminded of the quotation by Creighton Abrams when he said, "When eating an elephant take one bite at a time." That is exactly what this book is all about and does well. The game is introduced in small portions and time is allowed for the student to digest it before a new bite is offered.

For some Gamer Geeks, this book will be of little value. Either because they have no interest in Chess or they will teach the game to their Child Geeks in a way that personally suits them. For everyone else, including teachers, non-gamer Parent Geeks, and even people who simply want to learn how to play the game on their own, Chess is Child's Play: Teaching Techniques that Work will be an enjoyable and useful read. At the very least, it's a useful resource to quickly familiarize oneself with the game's rules. My copy now holds a place of honor among my children's book collection, accessible and ready to teach the next Gamer Geek generation the classic game of Kings.

Fantastic book for teaching YOU to teach your kids!

If you want to teach your kids to play chess, this book gives a straightforward and pragmatic approach to teach you, the parent, how to teach your kids chess. It is not a book to give to your children and send them to their room with a bunch of pieces and checkered board. Rather, it offers an approach that minimizes frustration, capitalizes on the strengths of a child's mind, and delivers far more than simply learning how to play a game. It guides parents not just through the rules and how the pieces move, but in understanding how kids learn, grow, and behave in the process. As Ben Franklin put it in 1750, "The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with, and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events, that are, in some degree, the effect of prudence, or the want of it." Sherman and Kilpatrick give simple and meaningful instruction that can be used to teach children both the idle amusement of chess AND those valuable qualities of the mind that are so useful in the course of human life.

"Chess is Child's Play" offers a new approach and a straightforward set of tools for bonding with your kids, while teaching them a skill set that will be with them for life! Three cheers for "Chess is Child's Play" and a copy to each of my friends with young children!!

The BEST obstetrical book EVER!

I used this book in the 1990's during nurse midwifery school and it was my favorite text. As an author and professor, I could no longer use the book as it had not been republished for some time. I was beyond thrilled when I saw it was updated. I was not disappointed! This is what I personally consider the "Bible of Obstetrics". It is concise, extremely readable, and includes crucial content without erroneous information and fluff. The new colored drawings are beautiful and the content is well laid out. They include statistical information and precise headings that make looking up content fast and easy. I have an extensive library of obstetrical textbooks and need to purchase the most current versions for textbook writing purposes; however, this is really the ONLY book you need. I often give students a short list of books I would take if I was on a deserted island and needed references to look up information. This is #1 on my list! Great revision!!

Packed full of easy to read information

This book is a great supplement to Varney's. Oxorn-Foote has great, easily legible, full-color illustrations (though I do question proportions in them sometimes) of many obstetric variations and complications. The layout of the book, with bold heading graphics and colored margin tabs, makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I also enjoy the writing style. To wit, this on shoulder dystocia:

"Usually equanimity forsakes the attendants. They push, they pull. Alarm increases. Eventually by greater strength of muscle or by some infernal juggle the difficulty appears to be overcome, and the shoulders and trunk of a goodly child are delivered."

My only beef with the book is that it is very much old-school OB about presenting all graphics as if the woman is in lithotomy. If you want to visualize side-lying or hands and knees though, just flip the book around. Oh, and it doesn't mention the Gaskin maneuver by name, merely calling it "all fours."

I'm a doula and pre-nursing student, and as I attend births I often leave with questions. I got an inexpensive used copy of this book as a way to become more familiar with the medical side of labor and birth, and it more than does the job. It's overkill for someone in my position, and yet absolutely fascinating and informative. In depth anatomy, physiology and practical medical information about labor and birth is presented in a concise, understandable, and thoroughly illustrated format.

I don't expect to ever read it straight through (unless it is required reading in school somewhere down the line) and the practical advice isn't anything I am in the position to use, but it's an interesting addition to my reference bookshelf as I try to sort out and understand for myself the medical side of what I see/hear at births.

A great supernatural read!

This book was a great read. I really enjoyed it because it contained three of my favorite elements for manga. It was supernatural, romantic, and it was full of action which I really like when I read manga. If you like having a strong supernatural theme in manga, then this is the book for you. I would recommend this manga and the series for people 16yrs and older. It does contain adult themes, but it is not overly sexual to the point where older teenagers cannot read it.

About the Author
François-Xavier de Vaujany is Professor of Management and Organization Studies at Université Paris-Dauphine, France. His work deals with information and organization using social and historical perspectives about information technologies and the space of collective activity.

Nathalie Mitev is Senior Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Management at King's College, London. Her research focuses on the organizational aspects of information systems and technology and she has built a reputation for in-depth qualitative research and for setting a critical agenda in information systems research.

Anouk Mukherjee is currently a PhD candidate at Université Paris-Dauphine, France. An electrical engineer by training, Anouk has cumulated a decade of experience in industry working on organisational transformation projects involving information systems before moving into academia. Giovan Francesco Lanzara is Professor of Organizational Theory and Political Science at University of Bologna, Italy.
