About the Author
Stephen Greenblatt (Ph.D. Yale) is Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. Also General Editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature, he is the author of eleven books, including The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (winner of the 2011 National Book Award and the 2012 Pulitzer Prize); Shakespeare's Freedom; Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare; Hamlet in Purgatory; Marvelous Possessions: The Wonder of the New World; Learning to Curse: Essays in Early Modern Culture; and Renaissance Self-Fashioning: From More to Shakespeare. He has edited seven collections of criticism, including Cultural Mobility: A Manifesto, and is a founding coeditor of the journal Representations. His honors include the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize, for both Shakespearean Negotiations: The Circulation of Social Energy in Renaissance England and The Swerve, the Sapegno Prize, the Distinguished Humanist Award from the Mellon Foundation, the Wilbur Cross Medal from the Yale University Graduate School, the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre, the Erasmus Institute Prize, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley. Walter Cohen (Ph.D. Berkeley) is Professor of English at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Professor of Comparative Literature Emeritus at Cornell University, where he received the Clark Distinguished Teaching Award. He is the author of Drama of a Nation: Public Theater in Renaissance England and Spain, as well as numerous journal articles on Renaissance literature, literary criticism, the history of the novel, and world literature. Jean E. Howard (Ph.D., Yale) is the George Delacorte Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University. A past president of the Shakespeare Association of America, she is the author of numerous books on Renaissance drama, including Shakespeare’s Art of Orchestration: Stage Technique and Audience Response (1984), The Stage and Social Struggle (1994), Engendering a Nation: A Feminist Account of Shakespeare’s English Histories, with Phyllis Rackin (1997), Theater of a City: The Places of London Comedy 1598–1642 (2007), and Marx and Shakespeare with Crystal Bartolovich (2012). She is at work on a book about the English history play from Shakespeare to Caryl Churchill and another on the invention of Renaissance tragedy.

Katharine Eisaman Maus (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins) is James Branch Cabell Professor of English at the University of Virginia. She is the author of Being and Having in Shakespeare; Inwardness and Theater in the English Renaissance; and Ben Jonson and the Roman Frame of Mind; editor of a volume of Renaissance tragedies; and coeditor of English Renaissance Drama: A Norton Anthology, The Norton Anthology of English Literature, and a collection of criticism on seventeenth-century English poetry. She has been awarded Guggenheim, Leverhulme, NEH, and ACLS fellowships, and the Roland Bainton Prize for Inwardness and Theater.

Gordon McMullan (D.Phil. Oxford) is Professor of English at King’s College London and Director of the London Shakespeare Centre. He is the author of Shakespeare and the Idea of Late Writing: Authorship in the Proximity of Death and The Politics of Unease in the Plays of John Fletcher, and editor of the Arden Shakespeare edition of Henry VIII and the Norton Critical Edition of 1 Henry IV. He is a General Editor of Arden Early Modern Drama. He has edited or co-edited several collections of essays, including Late Style and Its Discontents, Women Making Shakespeare, Reading the Medieval in Early Modern England, and In Arden: Editing Shakespeare.

Suzanne Gossett (Ph.D. Princeton) is professor emerita of English at Loyola University Chicago. She is a General Editor of Arden Early Modern Drama and has recently served as president of the Shakespeare Association of America. Excellent, really insightful

This is an excellent book that provides tons of insights about the MBA admission process. The author's writing style is very informative. He always conveys a list of key points for everything that makes it easy to remember or refer to the most important information. Early on the author conveys the 22 qualities Bus Schools are looking for. Next, he maps them out elegantly within a four dimension vent diagram (academic, professional, communal, personal). He mentions the 5 objectives of admission officers. At the end of the book, he restates the main 12 key points (if you forget everything remember at least those 12 points).

There is no miracle to getting into a top MBA program. You need the grades (GPA 3.3+), the GMAT scores (690+), the successful working experience. Those are the essentials to make the first cut so your application is not immediately rejected. In essence, that's where the real work begins because there are a lot more candidates (3.3+/690+/strong work exp.) than there are available seats at the top programs.

The author guides you on how to differentiate yourself. It is all about deep introspective analysis (know thyself), and communicating clearly who you are, what is unique about you, how you fit the mission of the school, what are your life goals, why you need an MBA, why are you applying to this specific school. It is all about your communication proficiency in interviews and even more importantly in the essays.

More than half the book is about the essays. Excellent essays with a 690 on the GMAT make for a more competitive application than a 720 with poor essays. The author covers everything about the essay writing techniques including how to address the hardest questions such as writing about your failures. Everyone needs help tackling skillfully such tough writing challenges.

The book is also full of other insights besides essay writing. If you are a strong candidate, apply early even if you have an oversubscribed background (banking, consulting). That's because upon the first deadline, the admission officers are looking strictly for excellence. They will select 45% of the class from this first group. If you are not so strong, but have a background outside the oversubscribed one apply by the second deadline instead. At that time, the admission officers are looking for class balance. They will select another 45% from this second group. Thus, if you are a nonprofit manager you are not competing against consultants, but instead against other candidates with your similar background. Don't bother applying by the third deadline. By this time, the class is already 90% full. Also, don't take the GMAT more than twice. The schools see all the scores. A 700 on the 3d shot may not cut it. Apply to at least 3 but no more than 6 schools. An application is an extensive effort. You don't want to spread your energy to thin and also tire your references with too many requests.

Excellent Resource for Essays

I applied to Darden using another reference and online resources before I found "MBA Admissions Strategy". I was blown away by the insight that permeates each chapter, and I corrected many

mistakes on my HBS app. I do not know what Gordon's background is, but he clearly knows exactly what goes on behind the scenes at adcom. He even explains what kind of people end up on the adcom and how to tailor your message to them.

So, I was waitlisted at Darden and now I have an interview at

Harvard. Wow! Can't argue with results like that. It was a lot of work but this book was my sole guide in transforming my essays. I am not an excellent writer but I am very pleased with the results. I would never try to apply to an MBA program without this book.

A Striking Strategy Nailed My Essay

I had a technically perfect, reasonable and ambitious Statement of Purpose and solid work experience. However, I wanted to be sure that it was a winning essay and turned to Avi for insight about it. After reading Avi's advice, it was obvious that my long-term goal of becoming a VP or Worldwide Marketing, while ambitious, was not adventurous or striking enough to secure my admission into an MBA program.

Thanks to Avi, I reset my essay (and career) strategy to something that made me nervous yet more excited and confident that my Statement of Purpose would standout when reviewed by the MBA Admissions Board. I don't want to give away my competitive strategy, but I believe Avi's book and valuable experience will enable you to prepare your own striking strategy, possibly rethink your career goals, and is a "must read" before applying to any college. I landed in the MBA program that I really wanted and trust that you will be successful as well.

A "must read" for anyone interested in anesthesia!

One of the most effective ways to devalue a profession, or any group for that matter, is to ignore their history. Anesthesia texts written for primarily a physician audience have for decades systematically avoided mention of the considerable contributions made to the specialty of anesthesia by Nurse Anesthetists. This book tackles, and successfully masters the task of tracing the development of anesthesia as a nursing specialty from the 19th century to the 1980's. Excellent account of historical aspects of the Nurse Anesthesia Profession and the AANA

The Nurse Anesthetist of today truly stands on the shoulders of Giants. This book is a wonderful rendition of the history of nurses providing anesthesia in the United States and of the history and beginnings of the professional organization known as the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. It is an excellent piece for anyone considering the CRNA profession and should be a primary reading requirement for all programs. Excellent story. Fantastic history.

Mark Sobkowicz has been teaching physics and computer programming at Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School since 1995. He's been programming since the 1980s in Basic, C, C++, Java and more, but Ruby is the language he goes to when working with students. Mark lives in Maynard, Massachusetts, and loves hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

I bought this as a gift for my brother, who is in the first year of his studies as a computer engineer. He has not yet started coding his own games, but he enjoys the format of the book and the fact that it's instructions are adaptable to both Mac and PCs.

Fun projects for the intermediate programmer

This book is a good introduction to how programs can be written in Ruby employing gems and external libraries. I concur with Victor Blake’s review about the experience being more entertaining than educational; however you will gain some practical knowledge by building the games. From there you can stretch out by modifying the games and creating alternative variations. Also agree that this book is not for people brand-new to programming. Follow Victor’s advice about some other intro to programming resources before tackling this text.
For these with some experience with moderate Ruby/Python etc… experience: 4 stars
For the complete novice to programming: Not recommended.

Practical and fun beginners guide to 2D game programming

Learn Game Programming with Ruby is an introductory book to 2D game programming for beginners. It is based on the Ruby programming language and makes use of the Gosu 2D game development library and the Chipmunk physics library. Readers are assumed to have basic programming skills in Ruby as there is no tutorial. The book guides the readers through the process of writing four very different games, which cover many aspects of basic game programming that may be extended or pieced together as the basis for more complex games.

The book first guides the reader to download and set up their Ruby development kit and libraries. From then on, it shows the readers how to write their first game, expand it, and then writing more but very different games as a way to show different techniques in game programming. The complete source code for the four games can be downloaded from the publisher's website.

The last part of the book shows the readers how to package their game for sharing.

The book is divided into the following main chapters, which should give you an idea of what the book is about.

Best all-around book on the subect.

I've bought just about every kitchen remodeling guide out there, and a huge stack of kitchen magazines. I wish I'd found this book earlier in the process -- it's by far the best. Practical advice and methodology on every step of the process from space planning to a great system for coming up with a workable color scheme (I was REALLY going nuts over this aspect, and now have an aesthetic approach that makes sense). Little things that other books don't discuss, like planning for the space needed to open cabinet and appliance doors, and what's considered a practical width for passage between a stove and an island, and setting up a working temporary kitchen for use during the project. It discusses all options and doesn't necessarily embrace all the latest fads. Do you need an island, or will it just clutter up your floor plan? It prepares you for what to expect during the process -- hiring contractors, the delays, when to order things, should I hire a designer or an architect? Or neither? And what's the difference? Lots of color photos and diagrams, discussion of various materials, relating your remodel to the architectural history of your house -- I could go on. All in simple, thoughtful, common-sense prose by authors who've apparently been there many times and know the joys and the pitfalls -- and have a great sense of design. You won't regret getting this book.

Nuts and bolts of remodeling and kitchen design

There are so many kitchen design books on the market. If you want the best one, buy this. Why? Because it forces you to think about how you want to function in your kitchen before you even begin to select cabinets, appliances, fixtures and fittings. What good does it do you to install attractive features like professional ranges and refrigerators, expensive cabinetry and lighting if, in the end, you have to walk clear across too long an area to get from your refrigerator to your sink? This book guides you to examine how you work in your kitchen, e.g., whether one or two people cook, whether you entertain, whether you have special needs for children, etc. There is a great section that teaches you about the hidden systems in your walls, like plumbing and electrical, in a way you can understand, so you can be informed about these hidden elements and aren't a total dummy when talking to your contractor and when determining whether what needs to get done as far as plumbing and electrical work is in fact being done. Might prevent the old "being taken to the cleaners" problems we've all experienced as, say, when dealing with auto mechanics. The section on construction scheduling and contractors is invaluable. The chapter entitled "Designing with the Physical Space" is terrific. This book is worth every penny and probably a lot more in terms of making yourself aware of all aspects of your kitchen remodeling project, what you want and what you don't want in terms of the functionality of your finished kitchen. As it is an expensive remodeling project to undertake, it seems worthwhile to make yourself as knowledgeable as possible. After reading this book and knowing I have it as a reference, the task of remodeling the kitchen seems much less overwhelming.

Start with this book!

If you are remodeling or building a new house this is the kitchen book to start with.
What it is: a kitchen design book that covers everything from floor plan layout to appliances to decorating to the plumbing, heating, cooling, etc.
What it is not: a nuts and bolts "how to" book. A picture idea book.
I was fortunate to begin with this book. It covers every angle of kitchen design so I really had to think of everything when planning my new kitchen. I haven't built it yet but I feel very confident about my design because of the details this book made me account for.
For most people this book could be the single purchase necessary. This book covers the varying levels of needs that kitchen users have. If the kitchen is just a place to have coffee and warm up soup or restaurant leftovers, or if you are a family cook, the design basics you need are here. If you are a serious cook who entertains a lot, like me, you may need to add other resources to your library. Or if you want a show-piece kitchen, you may need to go further than this book. Whatever style of kitchen you are creating START here, then go to other resources if you need to.
Good pictures (and quite a few of them), though like I said it is not a picture idea book. Text is prosey and easy to read.
Very highly recommended.

I thought this book was great! It had lots of pictures (I am a visual person) on places to go, told you how much each place would cost, hours of operation, and the train station that you would need to go to. Very informative! Only downfall, too big to carry in my handbag.
